Deputies: Drunk driver arrested with kids in car
KEELER TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A Pullman-area man has been arrested on suspicion of drunk driving with children in the vehicle, deputies say.
The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office said in a release that deputies were sent to County Road 687 between 72nd and 77th Avenues in Keeler Township, south of Hartford, at 1:50 a.m. on Friday on a report of a man screaming. The deputies found a vehicle off the roadway with the driver, a 27-year-old man from the Pullman area, slumped over the steering wheel.
The deputies said they made several attempts to wake the driver before he acknowledged them. They then spotted two small children, ages 3 and 5, asleep in the backseat.
The deputies asked the driver about a broken window. They say he told them that he had to break it because he lost his keys. Wind chill on the scene was near zero degrees, deputies noted.
Believing the driver to be under the influence, deputies asked the driver to get out of the car. The deputies learned that the driver was going from Lawrence to Pullman but was headed in the wrong direction.
The deputies arrested the driver. He was jailed on charges of operating while intoxicated and child endangerment. The case has been sent to the prosecutor for review.
The children were brought to the sheriff's office until family picked them up.
