Punjab Women Commission condemns assault on Kashmiri girl in Kharar, urges swift police action
The Punjab State Women Commission has condemned the mob assault on a young Kashmiri woman in Kharar, terming the incident 'brutal' and demanding immediate police action against those responsible.
In an official release issued Friday and signed by its deputy director, the Commission stated that it has taken suo motu cognizance of the case under Section 2001 of the Punjab State Women Commission Act. The girl, who was reportedly attacked on April 24, sustained serious injuries. The Commission said it has directed the local police to take prompt and effective action to ensure accountability.
'This is a deeply concerning act of violence,' the Commission said in the statement. 'We urge law enforcement authorities to identify and apprehend the culprits without delay.'
The assault comes in the backdrop of heightened tensions following the recent Pahalgam attack in which 26 people were killed. While no official link has been drawn between the two events, the Commission has appealed to the public to refrain from any retaliatory or prejudiced action. 'Such incidents are unacceptable. We call for calm and urge citizens not to take the law into their own hands,' the release added.
