Bengaluru police crack woman's murder, arrest relative and friend

The Bengaluru police Thursday claimed to have solved the murder case of a 50-year-old woman, and arrested her relative and his friend in connection with the crime earlier this week. According to the Cottonpet police, the suspects have been identified as Purandar, 42, a relative of the victim, and his friend Shivappa, 35, both from Karnataka's Bidar district. They worked as electricians at a private pharmaceutical company in Bidar. The police said the men allegedly killed Latha, and robbed her house after losing money in a scam. 'Initial investigation suggests they lost money in a rice-pulling scam and were in desperate need of funds,' a senior police officer said. On May 26, the two men arrived at Latha's residence on P S Lane, Cottonpet. As Purandar had visited occasionally, she welcomed them and served them breakfast. Investigators believe the men strangled Latha, as no weapons were found at the scene, suggesting the murder may not have been pre-planned. After committing the crime, the suspects fled with approximately 100 gram of gold and Rs 1.5 lakh in cash. The police said the men had arrived in Bengaluru in the morning by a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus from Bidar, and went directly to Latha's home. Latha's husband, Prakash S Mehtre (55), who owns an apparel store in Upparpet, discovered her body near the kitchen around 2 pm. The couple, originally from Bidar, had lived in Bengaluru for over 10 years. They have two children — a daughter employed in the private sector, and a son in high school.

Electrician, friend arrested for murdering Bengaluru homemaker

Bengaluru: City police arrested a 42-year-old electrician and his friend on charges of murdering a homemaker at Cottonpet. K Purandar and his associate V Shivappa, 36, both from Bidar, have been remanded in four days of police custody. P Latha, 45, was found dead inside her Durga Road residence on May 26. Investigations revealed that Rs 2 lakh and gold ornaments weighing around 100 grams, including a chain on Latha, were missing. Police concluded that it was a murder for gain and by known persons. "The intact main door, empty plates in the kitchen, and missing valuables strengthened the theory," police said. Police stated that Purandar, who is a close relative of Latha, lost money in the rice-pulling business as well as online gambling. "Knowing there would be some gold and cash in Latha's house, Purandar hatched the conspiracy. Also, he thought police would not suspect his role as he lives in faraway Bidar. Purandar and Shivappa came to the city on the morning of May 26 and entered her house after her husband Prakash left. After eating breakfast given by Latha, the two smothered her to death and fled with the booty," an investigating officer said. "We will take them back to Bidar to recover the stolen items," police said.
