Be Quiet! Power Zone 2 750w PSU Review
The be quiet! Power Zone 2 is a 750w power supply with 80 PLUS Platinum certification. Part of the new Power Zone 2 series, the 750w iteration is a nearly silent-running, ATX 3.1-ready PSU that offers some impressive bang for the buck. Capable of managing massive, short-term current bursts, the Power Zone 2 is ready to take on the most aggressive power spikes from high-end components. It's an impressive PSU that won't break the bank.
Measuring 160 x 150 x 86mm (LxWxH), the Power Zone 2 750w fits comfortably in any modern case. It offers a modular cable design with eight cables included, which provides power to all of your internal components with ease. The included cables offer plenty of length for less direct cable routing in the case, as well as making it easy to manage during a PC build. Along with the standard cables, be quiet! has included a PCIe 5.1 600w (12VHPVR) cable to easily handle the newer RTX cards (40 series and above), future-proofing the Power Zone 2.
As with the Straight Power 12 1500w and 1200w PSUs, the overall build quality of the be quiet! Power Zone 2 is impressive. Its outer casing feels solid, with easy access to connectors, which is in line with most modern PSUs. However, where things get interesting is the internal design, specifically with the cooling solution.
Be quiet! Has opted for the inclusion of a 140mm Pure Wings 3 fan for cooling on the Power Zone 2 750w. Known for their near-silent running capacity, the Pure Wings 3 fans are designed specifically to create more air pressure and cool the PSU faster. The bearings on the Pure Wings 3 are also incredibly rugged and, as with all fans from the company, run impressively quiet.
This brings up another impressive feature that I've not worked with before. I am speaking of the semi-passive design of the Power Zone 2, which can operate at a zero-RPM status when power loads are low. I was a bit skeptical of the system when first reading about it; however, after testing it, I have to confess, I'm quite impressed. The system can, in essence, run without active cooling for everyday productivity and some gaming.
This is achieved thanks to the more rugged and higher quality capacitors and power converters that have been specially adjusted to accommodate higher temperature thresholds. It might sound like sales jargon at first read, but in testing, I found the semi-passive operations of the Power Zone 2 to be quite impressive.
Thanks to the variable speed motor on the Pure Fans 3, even when under load, the PSU only spins that fan up to the necessary RPM settings needed to cool the unit. This allows for greater control of power efficiency and longevity out of the cooling system. It's a smart engineering feat that has been implemented exceptionally well.
Cooling isn't the only area where be quiet! impresses either. With an 80 PLUS Platinum and Cybernetics Platinum rating, the Power Zone 2 is incredibly power-efficient. This further aids in the cooling of the unit since it operates much more efficiently, even when under heavy load.
Perhaps the most impressive feature of the Power Zone 2 750w PSU, though, is its performance under pressure. This is thanks to the one 12v rail design. A rail, in terms of PSU design, is the component that transfers power to the components in the system. While historically, PSUs featured multiple rails, each with voltage limiters, the single rail system removes this limitation and allows the PSU to allocate power freely as needed. The result is a PSU that can streamline power allocation, ensuring that demanding components like the CPU and GPU get what they need when they need it.
Think of it as the difference between multiple garden hoses feeding from a single water supply and a fire hose from a single water supply. Both will fill a bucket, but the latter will fill it much, much faster because it's a single run of water with a larger hose radius. The same is true with the single 12v rail design. The value here is that high-performance components can easily be managed when this design is implemented.
In the case of the Power Zone 2 750w PSU, it can handle higher-demanding CPUs and GPUs with ease. Thanks to its more rugged and high-performance components and the inclusion of a single 12v rail, the PSU is built to withstand double its power rating for short amounts of time, making it incredibly useful for high-demand tasks or overclocking situations.
This is further bolstered by its LLC topology design, which also helps the Power Zone 2 to operate at a higher power level while maintaining its impressive efficiency. While there is a lot that could be said about LLC topology, the layman's version is that LLC topology converts AC to DC with zero voltage switching, meaning no voltage is lost in the conversion. This translates to a zero-loss power conversion. Thus, a more efficient system. It's impressive tech that serves the Power Zone 2 well.
As with all of be quiet! PSUs, the Power Zone 2 750w is a well-designed and well-built power supply. It offers excellent efficiency, cooling, and power pass-through to ensure your system gets the consistent power it needs to operate at peak performance. From design to implementation, the be quiet! Power Zone 2 750w PSU is a testament to the company and its commitment to excellence. Priced at $149.99, the Power Zone 2 750w is an excellent PSU.
