Changes in govt hasn't boosted Bumiputera middle class, says Rafizi

The statistics department recently said the Bumiputera community is expected to grow from 69.4% in 2020 to 79.4% in 2060, while the Chinese and Indian communities are projected to decline to 14.8% and 4.7%, respectively. PETALING JAYA : Former economy minister Rafizi Ramli says successive changes in government have failed to improve the productivity of the Bumiputera middle class, a key issue he believes lies at the heart of Malay insecurity. Speaking on the latest episode of the Yang Berhenti Menteri podcast, the Pandan MP said boosting Bumiputera participation and performance in the economy was crucial not only for long-term development, but also for bridging racial divides and achieving political stability. 'We've had many changes in government, but we still haven't managed to energise the Bumiputera middle class to be as productive and dynamic as the Chinese middle class,' he said. 'If we can close that gap, we'll reduce economic insecurity. And when you reduce that insecurity, Malays will stop saying things like 'habis la kita' (we're doomed).' Rafizi said Malaysia's political polarisation is deeply tied to economic disparities, especially among ethnic groups. 'When we talk about the economy, population breakdown matters — because that's your market. 'As the Bumiputera population grows, their role in strengthening the economy becomes more important,' he said. He said this was the rationale behind the Bumiputera Economic Transformation Plan 2035 (Putera35), which was designed to improve Bumiputera participation in the economy without sidelining other communities. Rafizi stressed that the initiative was not about increasing entitlement or promoting ethnic quotas, such as insisting all CEOs must be Malay. Instead, he said Putera35 was meant to create policies that are fair, sustainable and result-oriented. He added that closing the economic gap was a more effective path to political stability than relying on campaign speeches before general elections. Earlier this month, the statistics department said Malaysia's population is projected to peak at 42.38 million in 2059 before gradually declining. The Bumiputera community is expected to grow from 69.4% in 2020 to 79.4% in 2060, while the Chinese and Indian communities are projected to decline to 14.8% and 4.7%, respectively.

Bumiputera economic plan yet to succeed, says Zahid

Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is disappointed that the Bumiputera Economic Congress 2024 policies are yet to yield tangible outcomes, particularly in strengthening bumiputera's economic standing. He referred to the Bumiputera Economic Transformation Plan 2035 (Putera35), a master plan born out of the congress and intended as the foundation for narrowing the economic participation gap for bumiputera. 'We introduced Putera35...

No impact yet from Bumiputera economic transformation plan, says Zahid

Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi urged GLCs and GLICs to act as the government's main partners in Putera35's implementation. (Bernama pic) PUTRAJAYA : The policies outlined at the 2024 Bumiputera economic congress have not impacted the public a year later after they were first implemented, says deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He said the policies contained in the 2035 Bumiputera economic transformation plan (Putera35) are meant to strengthen the Malays' position in the national economy. 'However, I would honestly like to ask: have we truly worked on this agenda? Has the community felt the promised impact? If you ask me, I don't think so,' he said in a speech here today. Zahid said Putera35 cannot be a 'decorative document', being a national commitment to strengthen Bumiputera participation, ownership and power in the economy. 'If this commitment is not translated into action, we are only wasting time and the people's trust,' he said. Launched on Aug 19 last year by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Putera35 is a 10-year holistic action plan to strengthen Bumiputeras in the economy, supported by three core objectives, 12 growth drivers and 132 initiatives. The Bumiputera economic council was tasked to monitor Putera35 extensively with periodic reports to ensure its implementation bears results. Zahid urged all parties to take bigger steps in translating the Bumiputera congress' larger aspirations. 'We have 132 initiatives under Putera35. I want them to be given full priority and see results. We need a clear timeline. We cannot be trapped anymore in endless rhetoric. 'Much remains to be implemented. As these are government policies, the plan must become the main framework for all ministries, not just the economy, or rural and regional development ministries,' he said. Zahid urged government-linked companies (GLCs) and government-linked investment companies (GLICs) to act as the government's main partners in the policies' implementation.
