Speaking from experience, motherhood isn't easy. It is a rollercoaster of emotions filled with precious but fleeting memories. Mobile Game Monday celebrates all the meaningful mammas out there going through it and still (somewhat) keeping it together. Additionally, let's remember to appreciate the treasured memories of those amazing mothers who are no longer with us. Join us on this beautiful adventure that celebrates color, love, and motherhood. Monument Valley 2
Monument Valley 2 (2017) is a puzzle game developed and published by Ustwo Games. It is an emotional journey told through geometric puzzles inspired by classic art. Help Ro and her daughter as they work together to restore sacred monuments throughout the whimsical valley.

Each monument includes a series of puzzles in the form of buildings that can be manipulated via levers, cranks, and more. Move pieces of the building and manipulate perspective by sliding things around with your finger. Usually, only one or two pieces move, which keeps the puzzles fairly simple. The casual nature of these brainteasers makes them great for anyone, not just hardcore puzzlers. Screenshots courtesy of Cassie Holguin.
Ultimately, the goal is to create a clear pathway to the exit for the mother-daughter duo. Then they can restore that monument and move on to the next. The aesthetic of each level is different depending on the story. For example, when Ro and her daughter are separated, the level loses all color. The gray building represents Ro's sorrow when separated from her loved one. However, the color returns to Ro's life after she visits an old friend. This shows us that there is always color in a dark world if you are willing to seek it out.

Color and perspective play a huge role in Monument Valley 2, so it is no surprise to see classical art influences. All of the levels are certainly inspired by M.C. Escher's surrealist stair works like Relativity (1953). Art history nerds like me will also see the influence of abstract and modern artists like Piet Mondrian, who painted Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow (1930). The designers of Monument Valley 2 took inspiration from some of my favorite artists and created a brand-new masterpiece. Additionally, they use perspective in a surprising way to create breathtaking and rewarding riddles.

Monument Valley 2 is an emotional journey told through fantastically gorgeous levels. The colors, music, and puzzles all come together to create an atmospheric delight to the senses that I recommend to everyone. Although the game can be completed in about an hour, the impact is long-lasting. Screenshots courtesy of Cassie Holguin.
As a mother, I related to Ro's struggle with letting her daughter grow up and be on her own. Children truly do grow up in the blink of an eye and it isn't easy accepting that there may come a day when they don't always need us. As if I wasn't already emotional enough, Ro then reflects on growing up with her mother and learning to be on her own. I am lucky enough to still have my mom with me and we value every precious moment together.
