Welder fined RM5,000 for possessing obscene materials on smartphone

KUCHING (April 21): A 34-year-old welder has been fined RM5,000 by the Magistrates' Court here today for possessing obscene materials on his smartphone.
Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan meted out the sentence against Albert Abum after he pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 292(a) of the Penal Code.
The section provides for imprisonment of up to three years, or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
Albert committed the offence at a premises at Jalan Pelabuhan here around 4.15pm on Jan 24, 2024.
According to the facts of the case, Albert was apprehended during a police operation dubbed 'Op Pedo'.
Acting on information from an anonymous informant, police screened him and discovered adult pornographic materials stored in a folder on his smartphone.
Further interrogation revealed that Albert admitted to owning the sexually explicit videos, which he claimed to have received from others (not specified) via WhatsApp.
He also told police that he enjoys watching and keeping such videos, but denied ever engaging in sexual activities with minors.
