Man placed on probation for Davenport storage-unit thefts: Court records

UPDATE: A Davenport man was placed on probation after storage-unit thefts in 2024, according to court records. On Jan. 16, 2025, sentencing and judgment were deferred for Tyler Herman, and he was placed on probation during good behavior for a period of three years, unless sooner released by the court upon recommendation of the probation officer. EARLIER: A 25-year-old Davenport man has been released on his own recognizance after police allege he stole thousands of items from multiple storage units, according to arrest affidavits. Tyler Herman faces felony charges of first-degree theft and third-degree burglary, an aggravated misdemeanor charge of possession of burglary tools, and serous misdemeanor charges of person ineligible to carry dangerous weapons and possession of a controlled substance – methamphetamine – first offense, court records say. About 9:11 a.m. Tuesday, Davenport Police responded to QC Storage at 842 W. 76th St., Davenport, for a report of a burglary to the storage units. Herman burglarized multiple storage units, police allege. Officers spoke with the owner of one of the units, who said multiple items had been stolen from his storage unit. After reviewing camera footage, a suspect was developed and Herman was identified as being involved in the burglaries, affidavits show. Officers made contact with Herman at his home where, after a search warrant was executed, police found items that belonged to various burglarized storage units, police allege in affidavits, which say Herman had more than $10,000 of stolen property in his possession between the storage unit and his residence. Police allege Herman used lock-picking tools to pick the locks of several storage units within the facility, then entered the units and took property from them. At Herman's residence, officers found a lock-picking tool set, a black backpack containing 4.45 grams of methamphetamine, and a Smith & Wesson M&P 9 Shield semi-auto 9mm handgun, affidavits show. Herman is set for a preliminary hearing on March 19 in Scott County Court. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
