Flames Would Be Much Better With Mitch Marner
You need at least one superstar. It's reasonable to argue that the Calgary Flames don't have any. Jonathan Huberdeau has significantly struggled to reach his previous heights, and Nazem Kadri is elite, but he's not a superstar (yet). Bookmark The Hockey News Calgary Flames team site to never miss the latest news, game-day coverage, and more. The Florida Panthers have several and just won the Stanley Cup last year. Aleksander Barkov and Matthew Tkachuk would certainly fit the bill, both in performance and demeanor. Luckily for the Flames, it looks like one big name will be testing the free agency waters, and they'd better be calling his agent come July 1st. Flames Legend Johnny Gaudreau Named To NHL Quarter-Century Team Calgary Flames legendary winger Johnny Gaudreau has been included in the third group of six players voted into the quarter-century team who made their NHL debuts after 2010. The team also includes Leon Draisaitl, Nath MacKinnon, Cale Makar, Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid. 3 Flames Who Shouldn't Return In New Year Flames Prospect Morin Takes Lead In Playoff Assists in Game Three Win of QMJHL Finals Construction Begins on New Calgary Flames Arena The 1985-86 Calgary Flames Squad That Prevented A Gretzky Five-Peat Flames Prospect Morin Delivers Outstanding Performance In Game Two Win Of QMJHL Finals Calgary Flames prospect and defenceman Etienne Morin registered a game-high three assists, alongside teammate and top prospect in this year's draft Caleb Desnoyers in Game Two of the QMJHL Championships in Moncton, N.B. as his Wildcats beat the Rimouski Oceanic 4-3 in double-overtime on Sunday afternoon. Signs are pointing towards Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Mitch Marner at least testing out free agency to see what's out there. This writer can think of 31 organizations that would be over the moon to have a player of Marner's calibre on their roster. Chris Johnston of The Athletic reported that, 'there is a growing sense that Marner would like a fresh start with a different team next season.' Marner would be a massive addition for the Flames. He's been over a point-per-game player since his third season in the NHL. In the 2024-25 season, he recorded 102 points while averaging 21:19 in 81 games. Marner has also enjoyed a good playoff run. He has 12 points in 11 games before Friday night's Game 6 against the Panthers. If he joined the Flames, he would be reunited with former teammate Kadri. A top line of Kadri, Marner, and Huberdeau could emerge. That would be an incredibly deadly combination for the Flames. The Flames currently have $17 million in cap space. That's before the increase thats scheduled for next season and all of the money coming off of the books in the offseason. They certainly have the space to make this move. Will Marner want to come to the Flames to be reunited with a former teammate? Only time will tell. Add us to your Google News favourites, and never miss a story.

3 Flames Who Shouldn't Return In New Year
Summers are the time for hellos and goodbyes. The Calgary Flames need a little bit of both. Bookmark The Hockey News Calgary Flames team site to never miss the latest news, game-day coverage, and more. In 2024-25, the Flames took a big step forward. After missing last year's postseason, they came up short of the playoffs by a lowly tiebreaker. Instead, the St. Louis Blues entered the playoffs and lost to the Winnipeg Jets. Flames Prospect Morin Delivers Outstanding Performance In Game Two Win Of QMJHL Finals Flames Prospect Andrew Basha Makes Impactful Return in WHL Finals The 1985-86 Calgary Flames Squad That Prevented A Gretzky Five-Peat A Look At The Flames' Cinderella Playoff Run Following Their Inaugural Season In Calgary Regardless of the step forward this past year, the expectation for next year should be a similar, or better, result. In order to achieve that, every player on the team should be pulling their own weight. Here are three players the Flames should not bring back, in order to make room for better players. Kevin Rooney is on an expiring deal paying him $1.3 million. While that doesn't feel like a lot of money, this is one player the Flames need to let ride off into the sunset. The 6-foot-2, 31-year-old forward collected 10 points and averaged 9:25 of ice time in his 70 games. The Flames could find someone with their AHL club who could provide similar numbers, with similar ice time, at less than half the cost. Tyson Barrie (CAL), Dennis Cholowski (NYI) on waivers — Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) February 20, 2025 Tyson Barrie and the Flames were not a fit. He found himself on the short end of the stick when he was placed on waivers on February 20th, 2025. He never returned to the NHL. The former Edmonton Oilers defender has been on a downward trajectory since his former team traded him to the Nashville Predators for Mattias Ekholm. Unless the Flames want to bring him back at a league minimum two-way deal, they are better off sticking to other players available in free agency. The Flames should move on from Anthony Mantha mainly because of his injury history. The 10-year NHL veteran has one 80-game season to his credit. However, he remained healthy for the 56-game 2020-21 season. With the rising salary cap and better offensive options on the table in free agency, Mantha should not return in a Flames uniform for 2025-26. FUTURE FLAMES: Prospects Matvei Gridin, Etienne Morin still giving fans lots to watch
Matvei Gridin skates during the Flames prospects camp at WinSport in Calgary on Thursday, July 4, 2024. Jim Wells/Postmedia It is, admittedly, a bit of a barren landscape out there for Calgary Flames fans right now. Sure, you could tune in to watch the first round of the NHL playoffs and there's been lots of hockey to enjoy around the league, but if you're a retool-obsessed Flames fan, it's pretty slim pickings out there. Unless, that is, you look to the CHL … and the QMJHL, in particular. Out in Quebec and the Maritimes, Etienne Morin and the Moncton Wildcats have booked their place in the QMJHL Finals, while Matvei Gridin and the Shawinigan Cataractes have fought back from a 2-0 deficit in their semifinal and are now all-square after four games against the Rimouski Oceanic. That means there's a chance the 2025 QMJHL Championship Series will pit two extremely well-regarded Flames prospects against one another. It might not be quite the same as seeing the NHL club battle to keep their seasons alive, but if you're a Flames fan with an eye on the future, that one's worth keeping an eye on. With the Medicine Hat Tigers heading to the WHL Championship Series after finishing off the Lethbridge Hurricanes on Wednesday night, is it at all possible that Andrew Basha could return to the lineup and provide even more Flames representation? Here's what you need to know about each player and how they've done: Drafted: Second round, 48th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft The Wildcats have been an absolute juggernaut in the playoffs, winning 12 of 13 games and sweeping the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in the QMJHL semifinals. Morin has been a big part of it. With a goal and 12 assists, his 13 points are the third-most recorded by any defenceman in the QMJHL playoffs and there's every chance that he could finish tops in the league by the time the postseason is through. His six power-play assists are the second most in the Q, too, and at +9, he's got the 13th best plus/minus. The Flames signed Morin to an entry-level contract last year, and it will be fascinating to see where he fits in next year on a Wranglers team that already has some offensively gifted blueliners. There's more to Morin's game than his points production, though, and he's playing big minutes for a loaded team that's got to be considered a Memorial Cup frontrunner at this point. It's always a good thing to get valuable experience in a huge tournament like that, and Morin could join Zayne Parekh, Yan Kuznetsov and Jeremie Poirier as young d-men in the Flames system who have played key roles in winning the Memorial Cup. Photo by Jim Wells / Postmedia Network Drafted: First round, 28th overall in the 2024 NHL Draft When Gridin was sent back to junior after his first training camp with the Flames last fall, head coach Ryan Huska talked about wanting to see the Russian winger go to the QMJHL and 'dominate.'
