Qareeb wins G3 Jebel Ali Mile, Royal Commando conquers Emirates Sprint Series finale
Amir Naqvi, Sports Editor Amidst the thrilling spectacle of Jebel Ali Racecourse's most anticipated meeting of the season, Emirati trainer Musabbeh Al Mheiri's Qareeb emerged triumphant in the G3 Jebel Ali Mile—a highlight of the track's calendar. Sponsored by A.R.M. Holding, the prestigious race offering Dhs700,000 saw the son of Speightstown neck and neck with Michael Costa's Sadaaty over the 1600metres contest, with the two charging down the final stretch. With Silvestre De Sousa at the reins, Qareeb proved his class, fending off strong challenges from favourite Sadaaty and finishing more than one length ahead to reinforce his impressive 105 rating. Majestic Pride, trained by Simon & Ed Crisford, showed great resilience, but that was not enough as he ended in third place. The Listed Jebel Ali Sprint, the third leg of the Emirates Sprint Series sponsored by Lamborghini, lived up to its billing as Royal Commando defied all expectations and delivered a jaw-dropping performance. With Bernardo Pinheiro aboard, he surged forward and crossed the finish line ahead of Ponntos. The battle was fierce as Miroslav Nieslanik-trained Ponntos, under Patrick Cosgrave, tried to claw back, but Salem Bin Ghadayer's Royal Commando had other plans. No Nay Never's son bolted from the gate with power. Ponntos steadily gained ground, closing the gap with every stride. Rasas, the young colt, gave a valiant chase, but the two experienced horses held him at bay. Royal Commando fired a salvo in the final metres and surged ahead to claim the race by almost two lengths. Further back, Rasas, a 4-year-old colt, battled valiantly but finished third. Continuing its tradition of concept-driven racing, Jebel Ali Racecourse once again delivered an unforgettable experience with its ninth meeting, themed 'Fashion Day'—a dazzling fusion of high-speed competition and stylish celebration. Adding to the euphoria was the unveiling of The Hidden Gem, an enchanting new venue at Jebel Ali Racecourse, promising a unique and immersive experience for racegoers. The grand reveal added an extra touch of allure to an already vibrant atmosphere. 'Reflecting on the event's success, Mohamed Al Ahmed, General Manager of Jebel Ali Racecourse and Executive Director of the Emirates Sprint Series, said: "A truly remarkable day here at Jebel Ali Racecourse. The presence of international runners added immense value to our races, elevating the competition to new heights. The energy was electric, with a record-breaking crowd of 16,000 spectators filling the stands, soaking in the excitement and grandeur of the event. "Our goal has always been to offer more than just racing—we strive to create a complete, immersive experience for families and fans alike. With The Hidden Gem, we've introduced an exclusive space where fans enjoy a unique experience. 'Racing at Jebel Ali is not just about the track; it's about a vibrant, all-encompassing experience that captivates every sense." The day was packed with exciting activities, from a fashion contest showcasing elegance and style to a variety of family-friendly attractions, ensuring there was something for everyone to enjoy. 'We are glad Lamborghini joined the roster of sponsors, lending its support to the Listed Jebel Ali Sprint,' he added. The masterful Mheiri orchestrated a stunning treble, with Mersaal delivering a commanding victory in the Emirates Airline Cup and Inner City claiming the Al Shafar Investment Stakes under Daniel Tudhope. Mersaal seized control from the very start, dictating the pace. He crossed the finish line more than three lengths clear of Costa's Yotarid. Inner City, the four-year-old gelding by Dubawi, engaged in a pulsating battle to the wire. With Cabrit, ridden by De Sousa, and the Shuf Dubai, guided by Saif Al Balushi, mounting relentless challenges, the race became a three-way battle. As Cabrit and Shuf Dubai lunged forward, seeking their moment of glory, Inner City dug deeper, summoning every ounce of strength and courage to hold his lead. Bhupat Seemar's Dubay delivered a show-stopping performance in the ESS Stakes, charging to victory six lengths ahead of the Nahash. Costa managed to open the account as Alsayef surged to the front, claiming victory in the Al Awir Maiden Stakes. Ibrahim Al Hadhrami's Albiter won the Wathba Stallions Cup.
