Qatar win Stage 6 as FIBA U23 3x3 Nations League – Asia-Pacific concludes
Tribune News Network Doha The Qatar men's national basketball team triumphed in Stage 6 of the FIBA U23 3x3 Nations League - Asia-Pacific which concluded on Tuesday at the Federation Hall at Al Gharafa. Besides hosts Qatar, New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Chinese Taipei were part of the tournament with six teams competing in each category. Qatar men's team secured the championship with a thrilling 17-14 victory in the final over New Zealand, marking a remarkable journey through the tournament, having previously defeated Chinese Taipei (21-9) and Indonesia (21-14) in the initial round. The accomplishment took Qatar team's score to 520 points, achieved by winning the third and sixth rounds and finishing second in the first, second, and fourth rounds. This progress brings the team closer to qualifying for the World Championships, which are set to take place in Xiong'an, China, from September 17 to 21, while other continental qualifiers await the conclusion of their respective qualifying rounds. New Zealand secured second place in the sixth round after reaching the final by overcoming the Philippines (18-16) and Singapore (21-19). The Kiwis accumulated 560 points, having won the first, second, fourth, and fifth rounds, while finishing second in the third and sixth rounds. The Philippines claimed third place with 420 points, followed by Singapore with 325 points, Chinese Taipei with 305 points, and Indonesia with 300 points. The Qatar men's national team comprised Hamad Yassin Ismail Musa, Zeineddine Badri, Nizar Mahmoud, Ahmed Saeed Mohammed, and Mubarak Jama. In the women's competition, New Zealand secured victory in the sixth round by defeating Chinese Taipei in the final 21-19, taking their total points to 480, placing them in second position. The Philippines led the overall standings with 530 points, while Chinese Taipei followed in third place with 480 points, Singapore ranked fourth with 360 points, Indonesia was fifth with 310 points, and the Qatari national team rounded out the standings in sixth place with 270 points. The tournament was graced by the presence ofMohammed bin Saad Al Mughaiseeb, President of Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF); His Excellency Timmy Davis, Ambassador of the United States of America to the State of Qatar; Captain Yassin Ismail, Director of the 3x3 Committee at the Federation; Talal Saad Al Mughaiseeb, Tournament Director; along with several officials and guests of the tournament. At the conclusion of the event, Al Mughaiseeb and His Excellency the US Ambassador presented the champions of the sixth stage, the Qatar men's and New Zealand women's national teams, with their awards. Additionally, the New Zealand men's and Philippines women's national teams were recognized for their achievements in leading the overall standings and officially qualifying for the World Championship. QBF President Mohammed bin Saad Al Mughaiseeb, remarked: 'We take great pride in the exceptional performance of our national youth team, which exemplifies the ongoing efforts and strategy implemented by the Association to enhance the 3x3 game at the youth level.' He added: 'Winning this stage of the Nations League amid strong competition confirms that Qatar has a rising generation of basketball talent, and hosting the tournament at this distinguished level further enhances Qatar's position as a regional and international sports hub.' Al Mughaiseeb concluded his statement by saying: 'We aspire for more, and we will continue to support our players to ensure that Qatar is honorably represented in upcoming tournaments.' Special tribute to US Ambassador In a gesture that reflects the deep sporting and diplomatic relations between the two countries,the QBF President honoured His Excellency Ambassador Timmy Davis in appreciation of his presence and continued support for sporting events, and his role in strengthening sports cooperation between Qatar and the United States.

FIBA U23 3x3 Nations League: Qatar runners-up in 5th stage
Tribune News Network Doha The national basketball team of Qatar finished second in the fifth stage of the FIBA U23 3x3 Nations League - Asia-Pacific. The tournament is being hosted by the Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) from May 28 to June 3, 2025, and includes top-tier international teams in both the men's and women's categories. A total of twelve teams are competing in the tournament, comprising six men's teams and six women's teams: Qatar (the host), New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Chinese Taipei. The Qatari national team advanced to the final of the fifth round after triumphing over the Philippines (22-18) and Indonesia (21-8) in the Group A games. In the final, the Qatari national team narrowly lost to New Zealand (17-18) in overtime following a 16-16 tie at the end of regulation time. The game was played on Monday evening, June 2, 2025, at the Etihad Hall in Al Gharafa. New Zealand reached the final defeating Chinese Taipei (21-7) and Singapore (21-9) in the Group B matches. The fifth round games were attended by QBF President Mohammed bin Saad Al Mughaiseeb, QBF Secretary-General Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari, along with members of the Board of Directors. The Qatar men's team comprises Hamad Yassin Ismail Musa, Zainuddin Badri, Nizar Mahmoud, Ahmed Saeed Mohammed, and Mubarak Jama. Jassim Ashkanani, Director of the Qatar National Basketball Team, crowned the New Zealand team as the champions of the fifth stage. In the women's competition, the Philippines national team took first place after defeating Chinese Taipei in the final match, 21-14, earning 460 points. Chinese Taipei came in second with 400 points. Talal Saad Al Maghseeb, tournament director, crowned the Philippines national team as the champion of the fifth round. The curtain falls on event with the sixth and final round.

U-23 3x3 World Basketball in Doha from today
Tribune News Network Doha The Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) will host the U-23 3x3 World Basketball Championship from May 28 to June 3 at the Al Gharafa Hall. The event features elite international teams competing in both men's and women's categories. This tournament is part of the promotional initiatives associated with Qatar's hosting of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup, reflecting the QBA's dedication to enhancing the quality of events and boosting the global visibility of basketball in Qatar. The tournament is being conducted in collaboration with and under the oversight of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA). A total of twelve teams will participate in the tournament, comprising six men's teams and six women's teams: Qatar (hosts), New Zealand, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Chinese Taipei. The teams have been divided into two groups within each category (men's and women's), with each group consisting of three teams, thereby providing a robust competitive atmosphere and ensuring high-caliber matches. The Qatar U-23 team is placed in Group B alongside Singapore and Chinese Taipei, while Group A features New Zealand, the Philippines, and Indonesia. The U-23 women's team has been assigned to Group A with New Zealand and the Philippines, whereas Group B consists of Singapore, Chinese Taipei, and Indonesia. On the inaugural day, Wednesday, the group stage matches will commence, with Qatar scheduled to compete against Chinese Taipei at 3:45pm and Singapore at 7:15pm. Meanwhile, the men's competition will kick off with the Philippines facing New Zealand at 2:55pm. Following this, the Philippines will play against Indonesia at 4:35pm, then Chinese Taipei will take on Singapore at 5:35pm, and finally, Indonesia will face New Zealand at 6:25pm. The team with the most points will advance to the final match, which will be held at the end of the day at 8:15pm. In the women's competition, the Qatari women's national team will begin their campaign with two matches against the Philippines at 4:10pm and New Zealand at 6pm. The women's competition will kick off with the Philippines vs. New Zealand game at 2:30pm, followed by Chinese Taipei vs. Singapore at 3:20pm, Chinese Taipei vs. Indonesia at 5:10pm, and Indonesia vs. Singapore at 6:50pm. The first day's competition will conclude with the final game between the top two teams in the overall standings, which will be held at 7:50pm. The organizing committee confirmed that all logistical and technical preparations have been completed, amid close cooperation with the International Federation and the participation of international referees to ensure that the matches proceed at a professional level befitting Qatar's reputation as a global sports hub. This tournament is an important milestone in the Qatar Basketball Federation's strategy to expand the game and provide an international competitive environment for male and female players under the age of 23, enhancing opportunities for performance development and building future generations capable of representing Qatar at the highest levels. The champion of the Under-23 3x3 Basketball World Championship also qualifies for the 3x3 Basketball World Championships.

Al Rayyan emerge as Amir Cup basketball champions
Tribune News Network Doha Al Rayyan clinched the 2024–2025 Amir Cup Basketball Championship after defeating Al Arabi 77–70 in a thrilling final held at the Al Gharafa Indoor Sports Hall on Thursday. Al Rayyan overcame early pressure from Al Arabi to claim the prestigious crown. Al Arabi started strong, edging the first period 14-13. Al Rayyan responded by taking a narrow lead in the second period (26-24), but Al Arabi came back in the third quarter with a 20-17 run. In the decisive final period, Al Rayyan dominated with a 21-12 surge, sealing the victory and the championship. Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) President Mohammed bin Saad Al Mughaiseeb crowned Al Rayyan as champions in front of a vibrant crowd. The match featured a standout performance by Al Rayyan's Abdullah Yassin Musa, who led all scorers with 18 points. Al Arabi's Abdulrahman Saad and Mustafa Hussein also impressed, each contributing 17 points in a strong but ultimately unsuccessful effort. With this victory, Al Rayyan have now claimed a record 10 Amir Cup titles, further cementing their status as the most successful team in the tournament's history. Notably, their dominance began in the inaugural 1999-2000 edition, where they also triumphed over Al Arabi in the final. Al Mughaiseeb said, 'We at the federation are very happy with Al Rayyan's return to the top of the league. This distinguished club has a long history in Qatari basketball, and its return to winning after years of absence restores balance and strong competition among the clubs.' He also praised Al Arabi's performance, saying, 'We must commend Al Arabi's performance this season. They were a fierce and won the league title, the Qatar Cup, and, before that, the Arab Championship, which was hosted by Alexandria. This demonstrates the club's distinguished administrative and technical work.' Qatar takes part in FIBA Congress
MANAMA: The Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF) has participated in the main session of the FIBA Congress, hosted by Bahrain, with the participation of representatives from 180 national federations from across the world. President of QBF and Director General of the Organizing Committee of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027, Mohammed Saad Al Meghaiseeb, headed the QBF delegation, which also included Secretary General of the QBF Saadoun Sabah Al Kuwari, and Director of Strategic Planning at the FIBA World Cup Organizing Committee Fahad Jum. During the main session, President of the FIBA Sheikh Saud bin Ali Al Thani stressed the importance of the Congress as a strategic platform for shaping the future of the game globally, emphasizing the need to unify efforts to push basketball towards new horizons. For his part, FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis reviewed current challenges facing the game globally, pointing to future plans aimed at developing the game, empowering national federations, and expanding the reach of FIBA around the world. The FIBA Central Board reviewed reports on preparations for the 2026 Women's World Cup in Germany and the 2027 Men's World Cup in Qatar, and approved the bidding process for the next two World Cups. The bidding process for the 2030 Women's World Cup will begin in the third quarter of 2025, with the possibility of awarding the hosting rights as early as December 2025. The bidding process for the 2031 Men's World Cup will begin in the fourth quarter of this year, with the possibility of awarding the hosting rights as early as next year. Commenting on the event, President of QBF and Director General of the Organizing Committee of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027, Mohammed Saad Al Meghaiseeb considered this event an essential platform for exchanging expertise and strengthening cooperation between national basketball federations. He added that the Kingdom of Bahrain's hosting of this congress confirms its advanced position as a global sports destination and places Qatar in a leading position in preparation for the 2027 World Cup, as everyone strives to advance the development of the game in the region and enhance its presence in all sporting events. He emphasized that all delegations participating in the Congress commended Qatar's organization of the FIBA Basketball World Cup Qatar 2027 Qualifiers Draw, which took place a few days ago in Doha.
