Potential measles exposure at DIA, nearby hotel: Health officials
DENVER (KDVR) — Officials are warning the public of a possible measles exposure at Denver International Airport and a nearby hotel. The traveler landed at the international terminal of DIA on Tuesday, May 13, then went to the Quality Inn and Suites Denver International Airport for the night, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Denver Department of Public Health and Environment and Denver International Airport. Person with measles stayed at Pueblo hotel On May 14, the traveler returned to DIA and boarded a domestic flight. Anyone who was exposed on either of the flights will be notified directly by their state or local public health agency, officials said Thursday. 'This situation underscores the critical importance of vaccination. Staying up to date on vaccinations and being aware of health risks when traveling are important ways to protect yourself and your community,' said Dr. Rachel Herlihy, state epidemiologist and deputy chief medical officer at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, in the announcement of the case and possible exposures. 'Measles is highly contagious, and we are working swiftly to identify and notify anyone who may have been exposed. Vaccination remains the most effective protection against this preventable disease.' Here's where and when members of the public could have been exposed to this case of measles: Location Date/time Notes Denver International Airport8500 Peña CO 80249 Tuesday, May 135 – 8 p.m. Arrived at Gate A-27 in concourse A at 5:10 across the bridge to international customs. Calling ahead prevents additional exposures. Measles is a highly contagious disease. Colorado health officials said that measles can spread through the air via coughs and sneezes, and can remain in the air up to two hours after the person has left. The officials said that the measles, mumps and rubella vaccines provide strong protection and is the best protection. Two doses of the MMR vaccination are about 97% effective in preventing measles, according to CDPHE. Measles is very contagious. Here's how to avoid it 'Monitoring for symptoms is especially critical for people who have not been vaccinated with the MMR vaccine because they are at significantly higher risk,' the agencies stated. 'People who are susceptible to measles and were exposed at this location may develop symptoms through Wednesday, June 4. We will update the locations, as necessary.' CDPHE said measles symptoms typically take seven to 21 days to develop and include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a characteristic rash that usually starts several days later on the face and spreads. In February, a Texas child, who was unvaccinated, died of measles, which health officials said was the first death from the illness in about a decade. CDPHE told FOX31 in February that the last confirmed case of measles in the state was reported in December 2023, and that most of the time, measles cases occur in Colorado after travel or in under-vaccinated communities. Columbus police release body camera footage of Kyle Snyder's prostitution arrest
Columbus police have released body camera footage of officers arresting former Olympic gold medalist and Ohio State University wrestler Kyle Snyder as part of a prostitution sting on May 9 at a hotel on the city's Far North Side. Snyder, 29, was one of 16 men charged during the undercover operation at the Quality Inn and Suites at 7500 Vantage Drive. According to a criminal complaint, Snyder responded to ads posted by Columbus police advertising escort services at around 8:15 p.m. and set up a date at the hotel. Just before 8:40 p.m., Snyder arrived at the hotel and paid $160 in cash to an undercover officer to have a sex act performed on him. Body camera footage shows Snyder alone in the room when officers swoop in and quickly arrest him without incident. Snyder is led out of the hotel by officers. While they are walking out of the hotel, Snyder informs the officers that he lives in Pennsylvania. Snyder will appear in court on May 19. Attempts to reach Snyder for comment have been unsuccessful. On May 14, the wrestler posted the following on social media: "I want to thank everyone who has reached out with kindness and support. My focus is on my relationship with the Lord Jesus and my family. This is not conclusion of my journey." Snyder won three straight NCAA heavyweight championships for Ohio State from 2016 to 2018. He contributed to The Buckeyes' 2015 team title win as well. The university inducted him in 2024 into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame. He also captured a gold medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. He won the silver medal at the 2021 Summer Games held in Tokyo. His last Olympic appearance, during the 2024 games in Paris, saw Snyder finish in fourth place. Reporter Shahid Meighan can be reached at smeighan@ at ShahidMeighan on X, and at on Bluesky. Fire ravages hotel, restaurant in Winkler, Man.
Fire crews in the southern Manitoba city of Winkler battled flames and smoke for hours on Tuesday as a Main Street hotel burned. Emergency crews rushed to the Quality Inn and Suites when fire was spotted on the roof around 4:30 p.m. "Yeah, there was a huge fire. I just couldn't believe how devastating it was in such a short period of time," said Martin Harder, who was Winkler's mayor for 16 years and part owner of the hotel many years ago. He was preparing something to eat when he looked out the window of his home and saw smoke. He went to see what was happening and within the few minutes it took to get to the fire, things had worsened dramatically. "The sky was black, and later on, we saw the flames that were shooting up through the roof, and the whole centrepiece there came down." A Smitty's Restaurant & Lounge is attached to the west end of the 54-room hotel, but Harder said it appears most of the restaurant wasn't structurally damaged. 'The middle is gone' "The actual seating area of the restaurant looked like it was still standing, and some of the rooms on the east side [of the building] were still standing, but the rest in the middle is gone," he said. That section contained the pool, several rooms and the kitchen area of Smitty's, he said. In a posting on its Facebook page, the Quality Inn said all hotel and restaurant guests, staff and pets inside the building at the time of the fire got out safely. No injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire remains unknown and is under investigation, and the hotel will be closed for the foreseeable future, the posting says. The Winkler Fire Department was helped in fighting the blaze by crews from nearby Morden. Part of Highway 14 was closed to traffic to accommodate the emergency response. "To keep that fire contained was a pretty big, big deal," said Harder. There are several other businesses in the area. Guests with existing reservations are being contacted directly with support options, the hotel posted on Facebook. One of those guests is Harder's friend, who's headed to Winkler next week from British Columbia. Harder had offered him a room in his house a while back, but the friend decided to book a room instead. "I got a note from him this morning. He says, 'Is your offer still good? The hotel is gone,'" said Harder, who also had some plans change. "I was supposed to be there for breakfast at 7 this morning, but obviously that got cancelled." Aside from being a hotel, the Quality Inn was somewhat of a community gathering centre with the Smitty's Lounge, which had live entertainment many nights, Harder said. "The impact will certainly be felt."

Local Italian restaurant announces permanent closing of Ames location
A popular Ames Italian restaurant is closing, according to an announcement on Facebook Monday afternoon. Pasta Al Forno, located on East 13th Street, will close on Sunday. The owners indicated that staffing issues led to the decision. "Due to ongoing staffing shortages, we are unable to maintain the level of service and quality that you have come to expect from us," the social media post said. Pasta Al Forno is a family-owned restaurant that opened at 2601 E. 13th St. in Ames in the spring of 2023. The restaurant quickly became known for its scratch-made dishes, including delicious homemade rolls served complimentary to every table. "Reflecting on our journey together, we have cherished every moment spent serving you," the restaurant said in its announcement. "From our first day opening to the countless celebrations, we are grateful for the support you've shown for almost 2 years. Your loyalty has made our restaurant a beloved part of the community." Customers with gift certificates are encouraged to use them during their final days of operation. Pasta Al Forno's authentic, made-from-scratch Italian dishes are an ode to family recipes developed over 75 years in the restaurant business. Owned by chef John Kelmendi, his brother and head chef Visar Kelmendi, as well as their brother-in-law, chef Aron Dreshaj, the establishment is located at the east end of Quality Inn and Suites. The family immigrated to the U.S. in 1985 from Albania, where the Kelmendi family owned a restaurant near Italy, which they operated for several generations. 'Our family had restaurants always,' John Kelmendi said in a previous interview with the Ames Tribune in 2023. 'We grew up in the restaurant business with our parents and grandparents.' John Kelmendi practically has marinara sauce in his blood, he said, thanks to a 75-year history of family-owned restaurants. The local businessmen stay true to their heritage, delicately crafting each meal. 'We use the same recipes. We never have changed them. The tomato sauce, fresh marinara sauce, pretty much everything,' Kelmendi said. 'Each plate, each dish is started from scratch.' More: A new Ames store touts one-of-a-kind vintage and handmade products Kelmendi's family first settled in New York, then lived in Texas for several years before coming to Iowa. They've owned Pasta Bella in Mason City since 2014, a business that grew from a tiny space to a large, newly constructed building. More: This Ames surgery center closed recently, canceled all appointments and scrubbed its website 'We've been doing great in Mason City and have very great supporters there,' he said in 2023. 'We decided to open a second restaurant in Ames because it's a college town and there's a wonderful population here.' Pasta Al Forno, which translates from Italian to baked pasta, offers a large selection of dishes from northern Italy, though the menu is rounded out with selections from all over the country. Pasta Al Forno is closed on Mondays but opens at 11 a.m. every other day of the week. They'll stay open until 10 p.m. on Sunday. Ronna Faaborg covers business and the arts for the Ames Tribune.
