Commanders Call Quan Martin's Potential 'Best in League'

It is very common for a new coaching staff to replace high draft picks on their new team with players that better fit their scheme. In a way, Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn did exactly that in 2024.

One of the players that has managed to stay on with the new regime in 2023, though, is second-round pick Quan Martin. The safety out of Illinois started 16 games for the Commanders last season and recorded 87 tackles.
Washington is showing how highly they think of Martin as they move into 2025.
Indeed … As he gears up for his second season with Washington's staff, and third in the NFL, Martin is carrying some major expectations with him. And those expectations come directly from the defensive staff.
"This kid has the potential to be one of the better safeties in this league," Commanders defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. said of Martin. "That's what I'm holding him to. … That's what I expect of him, because of what he has."

There is reason to believe Martin can reach those high expectations.
At just 25 years old, Martin is on the precipice of being a Pro Bowl talent in Washington's secondary. That is no small feat considering the players the organization goes up against in the NFC East.
A.J. Brown, CeeDee Lamb, DeVonta Smith, and Malik Nabers are just a few of the lethal receiving options Washington deals with in their division. While Martin isn't known as a true cover safety, his work as a versatile piece in the Commanders defense is why the organization is so high on him.
And why it seems he has just scratched the surface on how good he can be.
