Austin nears completion of Zilker Park boardwalk project
AUSTIN (KXAN) — The city of Austin is wrapping up work on a new boardwalk system near Zilker Park.
KXAN first reported in February 2023 that the Austin Transportation and Public Works Department — in partnership with the Austin Parks and Recreation Department and CapMetro — is revitalizing pedestrian and bicycle paths along Barton Springs Road between Stratford Drive and MoPac Expressway. At the time, officials said the 0.7-mile project intended to improve mobility and transit access near Zilker Park.

In an update Tuesday, a department spokesperson told KXAN the project is in the final stages of construction. Crews are currently installing the boardwalk system as part of the Zilker Park shared-use path project.
Concrete installation work is expected to run another month before soil work, irrigation, planting, handrail installation and lighting work begins. Those improvements are expected to stretch into the spring, the spokesperson added.
The total project's features included:
Shared-use paths along Barton Springs Road, Stratford Drive
Landscaping buffer between the shared-use path and travel lanes along Barton Springs Road
Bus stop upgrades on both sides of Barton Springs Road
Pedestrian hybrid beacon, crosswalk across Barton Springs Road near the Zilker Botanical Garden entrance
The project's funding came courtesy of 2016 and 2020 mobility bond dollars as well as Austin City Council Quarter Cent allocations.
