Lewis Jones was one of 11 riders involved in a crash in the Quattro Group British Supersport Championship at Oulton Park, which led to the rest of the event being cancelled. (Image: Gavin Elliott) Despite being involved in the crash, Lewis was one of three riders who were not hurt. A spokesperson for Lewis Jones Racing said: 'On behalf of Lewis and the team we want to send out our heartfelt condolences to the families, friends and teams of the riders who sadly lost their lives in this tragic accident and those injured speedy recoveries. 'Thank you also to the medics, marshals and officials.' The Ammanford racer finished day one with a combined practice of 37th in the main Supersport Series and 1st in the Supersport Cup. (Image: Gavin Elliott) Jenner died from a severe head injury despite resuscitation efforts at the circuit's medical centre while Richardson, who suffered severe chest injuries, died en route to Royal Stoke University Hospital. Meanwhile, Tom Tunstall, 47, was taken to hospital with significant back and abdominal injuries. The first round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship began on the Saturday, Sunday and Monday of the Bank Holiday weekend, but was cancelled following the fatal crash. On Saturday, Lewis had two free practice sessions in the morning. For the FP1 session he tried out some gearing and suspension settings and made good progress. Then, Lewis took this forward into the afternoons FP2, finishing day one with a combined practice of 37th in the main Supersport Series and 1st in the Supersport Cup. With further setting changes, he felt confident going into day two's Qualifying and Sprint Race. The crash happened on the first corner of the first lap of the feature race. (Image: Gavin Elliott) Lewis qualified in P31 in the main series and P1 in the Supersport Cup Championship - the settings helped move him up the grid and maintain his first position in the Supersport Cup. In the sprint race, Lewis enjoyed good battles with his fellow riders, making it up to P22 and winning the Supersport Cup trophy at the same time, along with attaining a personal best lap time at the Oulton Park track of 1.39.569. On day three everything went well in the morning warm up and Lewis was ready for the afternoon's feature race. Unfortunately, due to an accident on the first corner of the first lap of the feature race, the red flag came out. Lewis was caught up in the accident and walked away from the scene, yet no further racing took place.

Second tragic loss for girlfriend of Oulton Park superbikes rider

A 11-bike crash claimed the lives of British Supersport riders Shane Richardson and Owen Jenner—marking a second heartbreaking tragedy for Richardson's partner, Hannah James, who lost a previous boyfriend in a similar accident nine years ago. The partner of British Superbikes rider Shane Richardson, who died in a collision at Oulton Park, lost her previous boyfriend also in a motorcycling crash nine years ago, it has emerged. Tragedy struck the British motorcycle racing world on Monday when a horrific 11-bike crash at Oulton Park claimed the lives of two riders, including Shane Richardson, 29, of the Astro-JJR Hippo Suzuki team. ‌ The collision occurred during the opening lap of the British Supersport Championship at the Cheshire circuit, after one rider lost control at Turn One and was thrown into the path of other competitors, reports the Mirror. ‌ The resulting pile-up led to chaos on the track, with at least one bike catching fire. Emergency responders were quick to act, but the crash proved fatal for two competitors: Owen Jenner, 21, and Richardson, a New Zealand native and father of two. Jenner, a recently crowned 2024 British GP2 champion and Rapid Honda rider, was taken to the circuit's medical centre, where attempts to resuscitate him failed. He succumbed to what organisers described as a "catastrophic head injury." Richardson suffered severe chest injuries and was treated trackside before being transported to Royal Stoke University Hospital. He died en route. Richardson's partner, Hannah James—a former grid girl—has now endured a heartbreaking second loss. In a cruel twist of fate, she had previously lost another boyfriend, racer Billy Redmayne, in a separate incident in 2016. Redmayne, 25, was critically injured during the Oliver's Mount Spring Cup in North Yorkshire and later died in hospital with James and loved ones at his side. On Monday, a third rider, Tom Tunstall, 47, sustained serious back and abdominal injuries and was also transported to Royal Stoke University Hospital. Five others—Morgan McLaren-Wood, Carl Harris, Max Morgan, Cameron Hall, and Freddie Barnes—escaped with minor injuries. ‌ In a heartfelt message posted online, McLaren-Wood expressed the pain felt by many in the racing community: "Struggling to find the words for what happened today. Rest in peace, Shane and Owen. My heart goes out to both of their families during this heartbreaking time." Following the incident, the Motorcycle Circuit Racing Control Board (MCRCB) and MotorSport Vision Racing (MSVR) released a joint statement: "At the start of this afternoon's Quattro Group British Supersport Championship race at Oulton Park, a chain-reaction crash involving 11 riders occurred exiting Turn One. The race was immediately stopped, and medical personnel were deployed. Due to the severity of the incident and ongoing medical intervention, the remainder of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship event was cancelled." ‌ Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Commentator says fatal British Superbike crash at Oulton Park is 'one of the worst ever seen'

Commentator Greg Haines has been paying tribute to the riders killed in an 11-bike crash at Oulton Park. A motorcycle race commentator has described an "catastrophic" superbike crash which saw two young riders killed as "one of the worst he has ever seen in his career." The "chain-reaction incident" at the first corner of the Quattro Group British Supersport Championship at Oulton Park, Cheshire, happened on Monday, 5 May. British rider Owen Jenner, 21, and New Zealand's Shane Richardson, 29, were both treated trackside for serious injuries but later died, organisers MotorSport Vision Racing said. A third rider, British man Tom Tunstall, 47, sustained 'significant injuries' and was transferred to Royal Stoke University Hospital where he remains. Another five riders were treated in the medical centre with minor injuries. Paying tribute to Owen Jenner, super bike commentator Greg Haines, who is based in Barcelona, said he was "a real character" who was a "joker in the paddock but took the sport very seriously." He went on to say the crash, involving 11 riders, was "one of the worst crashes I've seen and many of my colleagues I've been speaking to overnight." "It is unusual. In many ways it is amazing it doesn't happen more often - thank god it doesn't. But the start of the race is always the most dangerous time because everybody is bunched together from a standing start as well. "It is the risk the riders take and they know it can happen. But to have two riders losing their lives is absolutely appalling and to have serveral other riders injured - I wish them all the best." In a statement, British Superbike Championship said: "At the start of this afternoon's Quattro Group British Supersport Championship race at Oulton Park, exiting turn one, Old Hall corner on the first lap, there was a chain reaction incident involving 11 riders falling. "The race was immediately stopped and trackside medical services deployed. Due to the extreme severity of the incident and ongoing medical intervention, the remainder of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship event was cancelled. "This catastrophic accident has tragically resulted in two riders being fatally injured, and another sustaining significant injuries." Cheshire Police are investigating the deaths of Owen Jenner and Shane Richardson.
