Madurai district police introduce additional patrolling to curb crime

Madurai district police have introduced additional patrolling on arterial roads in the jurisdiction of their police stations that share border with Madurai city police. These four-wheeler patrols are in addition to the highway patrols and armed two-wheeler patrols already put in use to check incidents of crimes. 'We have studied the pattern of crime incidents reported in the last five years in the police stations bordering with Madurai city police limits and put these additional patrol vehicles on those select stretches of roads,' said Madurai Superintendent of Police B.K. Arvind. The four patrol vehicles have been operating 24x7 in the areas like Tirumangalam, Perungudi, Alanganallur, Samayanallur, Oomachichikulam, Silaiman and Othakadai police station limits. An Inspector of Police said that these police stations have new residential areas which are thickly populated. 'These extension areas are easy targets for the criminals to strike at people and houses for snatching chains and burglary,' he added. The movement of the new patrol vehicle, with siren and flash lights, has only increased the visibility of police presence. This prevents the trouble-mongers to strike at their will. Since, these vehicles would be moving in the crime-prone areas already mapped by the district police, it makes the job tough for the criminals to strike at the soft targets. 'The police do enquire people who move in a suspicious manner in isolated areas,' he added. The movement of the patrol vehicles are also being monitored through GPS. The vehicles are assigned certain pockets which they need to touch every day. 'Their visits with the time along with GPS marking are reviewed regularly. In the event of any untoward incident reported in these mapped area, the movement of police personnel assigned to the particular area is taken up for enquiry,' the SP added. Armed policemen deployed on two-wheeler patrolling have been covering select routes under Alanganallur, Samayanallur, Silaiman, Karuppayorani, Asutinpatti and Perungudi police station limits. 'Their primary task is to keep a tab on rowdy elements and watch their movements,' said Mr. Arvind. With the police frequently knocking at their doors, the antisocial elements have a sense of fear that the they are under the watchful eyes of the police. Besides, Quick Reaction Team has been deployed on Vadipatti-Nagamalai Pudukottai highway to check crime incidences.
