More deaths than births recorded in Tamil Nadu
Compiled by ARFA YUNUS, and R. ARAVINTHAN THE Tamil Nadu state in India has the highest number of districts where death rates are higher than birth rates in the country, Makkal Osai reported. In India as a whole, the districts with lower than replacement birth rates has gone from seven in 2019 to 49 in 2021. Seventeen of the 49 districts are from Tamil Nadu, which had zero such areas in 2019. South Indian states are showing more districts with lower birth rates than deaths, the report said. But the two most populous states in India – Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh – are showing the opposite trend, with most or even all of its districts recording higher birth rates. According to the report, these statistics have deep political implications, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalist BJP party keen to redraw parliamentary maps according to these trends. Most southern states are wary of these moves as their influence in the national parliament will be affected. Himalayan glaciers melt focus of climate meet

Six teams from the school – comprising pupils from Year Two to Year Six – won medals at the 3rd International Invention and Innovation Competition 2025. The event, organised by the Malaysia Innovation, Invention and Creativity Association (Miica), was held at Akademi Seni Budaya and Warisan Kebangsaan in Kuala Lumpur. The school's headmaster Ravi Subramaniam congratulated the pupils and thanked science teacher Saraswathy Munian for training the winning teams. Their success was made sweeter by Saraswathy also winning an award at the event. She was one of the 20 teachers worldwide who received the best teacher award in various categories from 381 teachers who were nominated. Outrage over woman dragged along road

The video, believed to have been recorded on May 13 in a neighbourhood in Sibu, Sarawak, depicted a man arguing with his presumed girlfriend. It was reported that the woman intended to end the relationship, which provoked him and triggered a fit of rage. The man forcefully pushed the woman to the ground and dragged her along the road. The woman attempted to escape multiple times, only to be forcibly restrained by the man. When she tried to defend herself, the man struck her on the head. The struggle drained the woman's strength, allowing the man to lift her up and carry her away. After viewing the video, numerous Internet users expressed concerns about the woman's safety. However, other netizens criticised the individual who filmed the incident, arguing that he should have intervened to assist the woman. Woman loses gold chain worth RM30,000 at temple

The woman was one of six victims of thefts that occurred at one temple located in Gopeng, Perak, on Sunday. According to the report, a total of 10 women lost their valuables, particularly gold jewellery, to thieves while attending two separate temple festivals in Perak. The remaining four incidents occurred at a temple in Sitiawan. > Nine men in Tamil Nadu, India, have been sentenced to life imprisonment for their involvement in a sexual abuse scandal that first shocked the state in 2019, as reported by Makkal Osai. Aged between 25 and 34, all of the men faced multiple charges, including gang rape and the distribution of videos featuring the victims. The court additionally mandated that 8.5 million rupees (RM426,000) be awarded to the women as compensation.
