CPI calls for resuming full supplies at ration shops

The CPI has urged the government to resume full-fledged supply of essentials across all ration shops. This was among the various demands raised through a set of resolutions adopted at the Pudupet branch conference of the party recently. According to a press note from K. Sethuselvam, CPI assistant secretary, the meeting also passed resolutions demanding free housing to low income families on the vacant government land in Murugesan Nagar, Pudupet and to implement the monthly allowance to the women heads of BPL families announced in the last Budget. The other demands included vector control measures ahead of the monsoon and replacement of damaged electrical wires of the Electricity Department. R. Murugan, member of the Thattanchanvady constituency committee, presided. Earlier, A. Sengeri hoisted the conference flag and R. Marimuthu presented an activity report. A new 11-member committee was elected to the branch committee.

Prizes were presented to winners of book reading competitions, awareness essays against drug abuse, and drawing competitions organised by the P. Subramaniam Memorial Library at the Thiruvananthapuram Tamil Sangom here recently. The competitions were organised through the Tamil Speaking Students' Welfare Project of the library to empower Tamil speaking students. Cash prizes and certificates were presented to 76 students and 17 teachers who guided the students. Tamil Sangom patrons R. Murugan and S. Gouthaman gave away the prizes. Its president M. Muthuraman presided. Scientist P. Sasikumar and writer Jothimani M. conducted a seminar on environmental protection for students.

Three green sea turtles rescued in Thoothukudi

Three legally protected green sea turtles that were found hidden inside a boat in Thoothukudi were rescued by the forest officials on Wednesday midnight. Wildlife Warden and District Forest Officer R. Murugan received a tip off that sea turtles had been concealed inside a boat docked near the old harbour in Thoothukudi and were being prepared for illegal sale. Acting on the information, the forest officials from the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve rushed to the spot and inspected the boat. Upon inspection, they discovered three green sea turtles tied up in fishing nets. The officials rescued all the three turtles safely. After conducting a proper examination, they transported the turtles by boat and released them into the sea near Vaan island. A case has been registered under Wildlife Protection Act and further probe was on.
