Governor must apologise for belittling T.N.'s educational standards: TNCC chief
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K. Selvaperunthagai on Wednesday criticised Governor R. N. Ravi for belittling the education development and quality of education in Tamil Nadu, which is one of the States to excel in terms of education and literacy in the country. He demanded an apology from the Governor to the people of Tamil Nadu. In a statement, he questioned about what the Governor knew about the quality of education in Tamil Nadu, further adding his comment that it was not just enough to study but that one must possess knowledge and talent was ridiculous. 'Many of the government-run universities in Tamil Nadu like Anna University, Madras University, Bharathiar University have received 'A' or 'A+' grade certificates from the National Assessment and Accreditation Agency. In the last five years, more than 35,000 doctorates have been awarded in Tamil Nadu government universities alone based on quality research. These universities conduct research under UGC guidelines,' he said. Mr. Selvaperunthagai further pointed out that Tamil Nadu has been rated as one of the best States in the 'Quality Education' category in the NITI Aayog Sustainable Development Goals Index India list (2020-21). In the School Education Quality Index (SEQI), Tamil Nadu government is leading the way in the quality of education, role of teachers, and development of students in schools.' 'The Governor should immediately withdraw this insulting statement and apologise to the people of Tamil Nadu. Otherwise, we warn that the Opposition against him through democratic means will only grow stronger,' he said.

Tamil Nadu moves Supreme Court against Madras High Court's stay on Vice-Chancellor appointment laws
The Tamil Nadu government, in a late night move, approached the Supreme Court on Tuesday (June 3, 2025) against a Madras High Court stay of nine Acts related to the appointments of Vice-Chancellors in State-run universities. The High Court had ordered a stay despite the Supreme Court, in an April 8, 2025 judgment, having invoked its inherent powers under Article 142 of the Constitution to deem that the Bills were assented to by the State Governor R.N. Ravi. Tamil Nadu Governor case: Click here to read the full judgement of the Supreme Court Following the verdict, the State government had notified the Acts. However a petition was filed in the High Court challenging The Tamil Nadu University Amendment Act; The Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (Amendment) Act; The Tamil Nadu Universities Laws (Amendment) Act, 2022; The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University (Amendment) Act, 2022; The Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai (Amendment) Act, 2022; The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (Amendment) Act, 2022; The Tamil Nadu Fisheries University (Amendment) Act, 2023; The Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (Amendment) Act, 2023 The High Court's Vacation Bench stayed the amendments in an order on May 21, 2025 on the ground that UGC Regulations 2018 would prevail over the State legislation by virtue of the doctrine of repugnancy. Challenging the stay, the State, represented by senior advocate P. Wilson, argued there is a strong presumption of constitutionality against laws passed by the legislature. Editorial | Misplaced urgency: On the Madras High Court interim order 'Courts should be slow in passing interim orders in matters challenging constitutionality of provisions and against the strong presumption of constitutionality. The High Court passed an interim order directing stay of operation of provisions which take away power of appointment of Vice Chancellor from the hands of the Chancellor and vest the same in the government,' the petition said. Pertinently, the State argued that the writ petition was filed in the High Court during vacations, without pleading any urgency in the matter. 'The Vacation Division Bench of the High Court entertained the writ petition from a lawyer belonging to a political party…. The Division Bench passed the order without granting reasonable opportunity to the State to defend its case by filing a counter affidavit. The matter was heard during vacations till 6.30 pm, beyond court hours, and the Impugned order was passed,' the State contended. The State said its appeal has raised questions of law with wide ramifications pertaining to the issue of federalism and State autonomy to establish, regulate and administer State Universities under Entry 32 List II of the Seventh Schedule of the Constitution along with the issues pertaining to judicial impropriety and discipline in keeping a hands-off approach.

Operation Sindoor is a watershed moment in history, says TN Governor
Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi on Sunday (June 1, 2025) said that Operation Sindoor is a watershed moment in India's journey and marks a new era in the country's national security. He said future generations would study this operation as a major shift in how India asserts itself on the global stage. Speaking at an event organised by the Chennai Citizens Forum (CCF) on the topic: 'From Battlefield to Diplomacy: Operation Sindoor Decoded', Mr. Ravi hailed Indian scientists and technologists who developed advanced sensor systems used in the operation and acknowledged the country's growing capacity for research and development. Mr. Ravi also listed several cross-border terror attacks since Independence and described in detail how Indian political leadership responded to such attacks. He said there has been an important shift in India's approach since 2014, when Narendra Modi took over as Prime Minister. He also alleged that by understanding India only as a geographical expression, the country had earlier 'lost' territories in several areas. He cited several examples, including the exchange of enclaves with Bangladesh (then East Pakistan), the 'giving away' of the Kabaw Valley to Burma (present-day Myanmar), and of Katchatheevu to Sri Lanka. 'But Bharat as a nation has existed for thousands and thousands of years with a wide range of diversities — including religious, cultural, linguistic, and culinary. No country in the world can boast or claim as much diversity as Bharat has,' he said. He also called the National Education Policy 'a revolutionary initiative' and added, 'Some people say that they will not accept it. This is not possible. They have to. There is no option. The National Education Policy is necessary for self-reliance and a thrust on our research and innovation.' He said that in the last five years, India has grown nearly 500 times in terms of registering patents. He also said that although Tamil Nadu has more than 20 State-run universities and produces more than 7,000 PhDs every year, it falls behind in intellectual property registrations. In his speech, Air Marshal (Retd) M. Matheswaran traced attacks and responses from Kargil to Pulwama and explained about various missiles and indigenous systems used by the Indian Armed Forces to make precise and controlled strikes without triggering uncontrolled escalation. Colonel (Retd) John Prince said the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty has afforded India a crucial window to accelerate dam construction across key rivers like the Jhelum, Ravi, and Sutlej. 'In our army parlance, we can weaponise these waters.' K.T. Raghavan, president, CCF, said that within a short span, the Indian Air Force executed Operation Sindoor with precision, and the geopolitical implications of such an operation would be understood by all. R. Gayathri Suresh, secretary, CCF, was among others present. ends

World is watching new Bharat, says Governor
The entire world is watching the progress happening in India, ie, new Bharat, Governor R.N. Ravi has said. Speaking at the 10th anniversary celebrations of Sri Sevugamurthi Goushala Trust and 108 goushala puja and yagavelvi festival at Singampunari in Sivaganga district on Thursday, he said the world was learning from the new Bharat. 'By 2047, we have to become fully self-reliant and developed for the good of the world,' he said. Lauding Prime Minister Narendra Modi for showing an alternative way to the new Bharat, the Governor said some years ago, the country had set a goal for itself to achieve sustainable development. Now, be it in agriculture or health, the nation was ahead. During COVID - 19 pandemic, some developed nations had developed the vaccines and sold them at exorbitant prices. But, India not only produced the vaccines and used it for the people free of cost, but also offered them to many nations. Many nations started listening to India and stopped instructing India. The western model of growth and development had proved disastrous that even India became poor. After 2014, the country steadily improved due to the alternative model of development and today, India was one among the fastest growing economies in the world. The Governor said private participation in people's efforts to protect cows here manifested spirituality and bravery. From time immemorial, many stalwarts such as Velu Nachiyar and Marudhu Brothers from this land (Sivaganga) had shown that they would not hesitate to give even their lives during challenges. Sacrifice, spirituality and bravery had been synonymous with Tamil Nadu. 'Even today, they are resonating across different parts of the State. The warriors from this land would always be an inspiration to youngsters,' he said. Appreciating the services of Sevugamurthi Goushala Trust, he hoped that the tradition of protecting and gifting cows continued. 'Like the farmers' who nourished the land, the goushalas in the country have taught us to nourish cows. The tradition should be carried forward by more and more people as governments alone cannot protect cows,' he said. The Pahalgam terror attack, which was followed by Operation Sindoor, was the new normal for the country. 'The Indian forces eliminated all the terrorists hideout in PoK and the adventurous actions of Pakistan were nullified. This is the new Bharat,' he added. Madurantaki Nachiyar of Sivaganga Samasthanam presided. The 46th Pontiff of Kundragudi Math, Sri Ponnambala Adigalar, offered his blessings.
