RCB Parade Stampede News: The Bengaluru stampede that caused the death of 11 people outside M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday has resulted in an outpouring of grief with India cricketer Virat Kohli 'absolutely gutted". Thousands had gathered outside the cricket stadium to catch a glimpse of Royal Challengers Bengaluru cricketers who later arrived at the venue as part of their first ever IPL title celebrations.
The chaos unfolded after a massive crowd gathered outside the stadium and at the Vidhana Soudha – nearly triple of what was initially estimated. As per a senior police officer, the incident happened because the public didn't pay heed o their advisories.
'People did not heed our advisories or the repeated public announcements asking them to disperse. They were determined to reach the venue no matter what," the official said on condition of anonymity to News18.
Taking to social media, Kohli wrote, 'At a loss for words. Absolutely gutted" while resharing an official statement from his IPL franchise RCB.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia expressed his condolences to the family of the deceased while slamming the organisers of the event.
'It is very unfortunate. This is a negative side of popularity. People are crazy for cricketers. The organisers should have planned it better. My deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. I wish early recovery of the injured," Saikia told news agency PTI.
'When one organises a victory celebration of this magnitude, proper precautions, safety and security measures need to be taken. There have been some lapses somewhere. After such a glorious ending to the IPL, this has been an anti-climax," he added.
The RCB squad arrived in Bengaluru on Wednesday morning before heading to Vidhana Soudha where they were felicitated by Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D K Shivakumar. They then headed to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium to continue their victory celebrations where fans had gathered to witness a musical performance before the players including RCB captain Rajat Patidar and Kohli delivered speeches.
