‘I am full of joy': Africatown Welcome Center breaks ground
AFRICATOWN, Ala. (WKRG) — After years of planning and preparation, community leaders broke ground Monday on a new Africatown Welcome Center. City of Mobile, Oak View Group set groundbreaking for new arena 'Right now, I am full of joy,' community leader Cleon Jones said. The new welcome center will sit on Bay Bridge Cutoff Road just off Africatown Boulevard. 'A project of this size and this magnitude that encompasses the beliefs of everybody in the area brings about a feeling of hope and new beginnings,' Mobile City Councilman William Carroll said. This project costs $5.1 million and is funded completely through the RESTORE Act. The welcome center will be a starting place for visitors to learn about the Freedom Town created by the 110 slaves brought to Mobile Bay on the Clotilda, 50 years after the international slave trade was abolished in the U.S. The center will have meeting rooms, exhibition spaces and outdoor areas for festivals and other performances. 'We have a story to tell and an obligation to tell that story,' Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson said. The building will also kick off tours like the Africatown Freedom tour group. 'This is what you call world history, so by being world history, people need to know this little part of history needs to be told to the whole world,' Africatown Freedom tour organizer Chiquitta Clemons-Howard said. Groundbreaking scheduled for Africatown Welcome Center

Mississippi State breaks ground on seafood testing facility
JACKSON COUNTY, Miss. (WJTV) – Mississippi State University (MSU) officially broke ground on Monday on the Northern Gulf Aquatic Food Research Center. The facility will be dedicated to aquatic food safety, quality assessment, processing and product development. The ceremony, hosted by the Jackson County Economic Development Foundation (JCEDF), recognized more than five years of collaborative work with MSU on the multimillion-dollar facility. MSU's Ballew Hall opens, showcasing dedication to agriculture Construction of the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (MAFES) research center is a combined investment of $3 million from the federal RESTORE Act and $865,000 from the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act, or GOMESA, as well as $4 million from the state to cover fixed equipment including walk-in coolers and freezers and fume hoods for the laboratory. 'Mississippi State University is uniquely charged with serving the entire state of Mississippi, and we are very proud of the work we are doing on the Coast,' MSU President Mark E. Keenum said. 'We are grateful for the investments and the outstanding partners who have made the Northern Gulf Aquatic Food Research Center possible. It's a great example of what we can accomplish by working together to sustain and grow economic opportunities in our state and nation while being good stewards of our abundant natural resources.' Officials said the new research center will help Mississippi meet a critical need for one of its largest industries. It also will help the state's catfish producers, who manage 29,900 freshwater pond acres, with a total production value of $214 million in 2024. Mobile City Council approves construction contract for Africatown Welcome Center
MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — The Mobile City Council voted Tuesday to approve a construction contract for the Africatown Welcome Center. According to city officials, construction can begin once the United States Treasury Department approves the contract. Constructed is expected to take one year to complete. City officials said the Africatown Welcome Center will serve as a 'strategic community destination' and will provide visitors a 'first stop' to link cultural destinations and historic sites. Mobile officials also said residents have been actively participating throughout the process. The design process featured multiple community meetings and public input surveys. A city spokesperson said partners include Mott MacDonald for design, C. Roberds General Contractors, LLC for construction, and Africatown Community Development Corporation, who is the original owner of the property.
