Granada substation power loss pinpointed as origin of massive blackout in Spain, Portugal
People walk along a shopping street without electric lighting as police cars patrol to prevent theft and looting in the stores during a power outage which hit large parts of Spain, in Ronda, Spain April 28, 2025. REUTERS/Jon Nazca/File Photo MADRID - An abrupt loss of power generation at a substation in Granada, followed by failures seconds later in Badajoz and Seville, triggered an unprecedented blackout across Spain and Portugal on April 28, Spain's energy minister said on Wednesday. Energy Minister Sara Aagesen told lawmakers that the three initial incidents, whose cause has yet to be determined, led to a generation loss of 2.2 gigawatts of electricity, which triggered a series of grid disconnections. Several investigations are looking into the power outage, but it is the first time Spanish authorities have pointed to a specific origin. Establishing the cause of the outage will take time and there will likely be no simple answers to what appears to be a complex issue, Aagesen said. "We are analysing millions of pieces of data. We also continue to make progress in identifying where these generation losses occurred and we already know that they started in Granada, Badajoz and Seville," Aagesen said. She said the government's investigation is also looking at reports by operators of volatility in the days before the blackout and is examining excessive voltage as one possible cause for the loss of generation. Investigators, Aagesen said, had ruled out any cyberattack on grid operator REE, an imbalance in supply and demand or insufficient grid capacity. She also denied suggestions by some opposition lawmakers that the government had received and ignored warnings from experts that a major blackout could occur, adding that it would be premature to attribute responsibilities until it's known what happened that day. "There was no alert, no warning," she said. Spain's use of renewable energy as an increasing part of its electricity generation has come under scrutiny since the blackout, as has its plan to phase out nuclear energy by 2035. Critics have said that one possible contributor to the outage may have been a lack of so-called "grid inertia" because of the relatively small share of nuclear and fossil fuel generation in Spain's power mix. Aagesen defended the government's energy policy, saying that renewables have lowered bills for households and businesses and will allow Spain to attract more investment while providing more energy autonomy at a time of geopolitical instability. Spain's electricity system continues to use the same level of renewables as it did before and during the outage, she said. "A mix with more renewables reduces external risks. It enables us to anticipate, adapt to, and respond quickly to any eventuality." Aagesen signalled openness to extending the life of nuclear plants, but only if operators could guarantee their security and acceptable prices for consumers, and if this could be shown to contribute to security of supply. Vancouver Live updates: Death toll from Lapu Lapu festival car ramming rises to 11
Highlights: At least 11 people were killed and dozens injured when a man with a history of mental health issues rammed an SUV through a crowd at a Filipino community festival, police said on Sunday. The incident happened shortly after 8 p.m. (0300 GMT) on Saturday in Vancouver's Sunset neighborhood, an area known for its large Asian population, where the Lapu-Lapu Day Block Party, celebrating a Philippine national hero , was taking place. A 30-year-old Vancouver man was arrested at the scene. Police described him as having had a 'significant history' of interactions with authorities involving mental health. They said there was no evidence of terrorism. 'This is the darkest day in our city's history,' Vancouver Interim Chief Constable Steve Rai told reporters at a Sunday press conference. He said dozens of people were injured, some seriously, and warned that the death toll could rise in coming days and weeks. More than 100 police officers joined the investigation, as local officials worked with provincial and federal authorities to provide support services. Messages of condolence and support came from across the globe. 'The community will feel this for a long time,' RJ Aquino, chair of the community advocacy group Filipino BC, told reporters. 'We want to tell everybody that we're grieving. We want to tell everybody that we see and hear the support from around the world at this point.' The attack on Saturday evening took place two days before Canada's federal election on Monday. Prime Minister Mark Carney's campaign movements were delayed on Sunday morning but he resumed campaigning after making a statement in which he expressed his condolences to the country's Filipino community. More than 12 hours after the incident, police still did not have a motive for the attack at the festival, which took place without a dedicated police presence or heavy vehicle barriers. 'There were no known threats to the event or to the Filipino community,' Rai said. Residents and visitors in Ottawa said they were 'disgusted' and 'devastated' after learning the news on Sunday morning. Ken Hudson, 73, who is originally from Ottawa said: 'I was pretty disgusted with the whole thing that's happening in Canada. They shouldn't be allowed. You can't blame the security because they did everything they could do. And the people deserve a break. Every man has the right to celebrate in this country. To disrupt the whole thing is pathetic.' Marya Mazher, 38, who lives in Toronto and works as a social worker said: 'It's truly heartbreaking whenever anyone loses their life at the hands of terrorism or just a loss of humanity. It's truly heartbreaking. And I hope the families get justice.' LeeAnn McGovern, 54, who lives in Ottawa and works as an urban planner said: 'Obviously, devastated by it. It's awful news, awful that such a thing would happen. Tragic.' EU Commission Presiden: 'Europe is with you' Police officers work at the scene the morning after the incident. April 27, 2025. REUTERS/Chris Helgren In the wake of the brutal events in Vancouver, we express our deepest condolences, solidarity and friendship to the people of Canada, and especially the Filipino community. Europe is with you in these difficult times. Reuters

Soldier arrested for allegedly taking C-4 explosive home
(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A Fort Carson soldier has been arrested after he took a block of a military explosive to his home. According to an arrest affidavit FOX21 News received, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) contacted the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) Regional Explosives Unit (REU) and advised them that 41-year-old soldier Joshua King, had a block of C-4 military explosive at his home located in the Broadmoor Bluffs neighborhood. Per court documents, the affidavit was received on Monday, March 10. Documents indicated that this information was received by King's spouse, who currently lives at the home. The spouse also told REU they were going through a divorce and King no longer lived at that house. Per arrest documents, King was currently living at another home nearby on Canoe Creek Drive. On Feb. 4, the spouse contacted law enforcement over the situation. An El Paso County Sheriff's Office deputy and special agents with the FBI and the United States Army Criminal Investigation Division (CID) met at the home and recovered the explosives. The C-4 block was located on top of a dresser in the corner of an attached garage. 'I observed the C-4 block after it was collected and noted that based on my training and experience, it appeared to be military C-4 (plastic explosives),' the documents said. 'It was also noted that the block was encased in what appeared to be the original wrapping, bearing the lot number IOP15E001-034.' The spouse told law enforcement that King had brought the block home and would hide it around the house for her dog to find. She informed law enforcement that her father, who was a retired Special Agent for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), was an Explosive Detection Canine handler, and after retirement two years ago had given the dog to her. 'Joshua told her to not tell anyone he brought the block of C-4 home from where he worked on Ft. Carson,' arrest papers stated. The spouse also said the explosives had been kept in multiple places inside the home at Broadmoor Bluffs. Days later, detectives received more information from CID that indicated the C-4 had been issued to Fort Carson between Jan. and Feb. in 2019. King is a member of the 588th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, and 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson. In March, Members of the CID also said there is no justification for a person in a position such as King's to have possession of the C-4. King also didn't have an Explosives Permit and was 'not legally authorized to have access to or store explosive materials.' CID was also conducting a separate investigation into King regarding domestic violence incidents, and an ex-girlfriend who lived with him at the home on 1635 Canoe Creek Drive until Nov. 24 told them that King had shown her a picture of an explosive and he had explained he took it from the Army. King has been charged with a Felony, Possession, Use, or Removal of Explosives or Incendiary Devices. According to court documents, King is due in court for a status hearing on Thursday, March 27 at 2:15 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
