Conscientious Objectors Day marked for a second year

Prof Clements had read a statement from the Peace Pledge Union, UK and said the threat of conscription around the world remained real. Archibald Baxter Memorial trustee Tony Eyre said the day was commemorated in Dunedin for the first time last year and would continue to be marked annually. "We're all surrounded by what's happening in Gaza, in Ukraine, Pakistan and India." "It's not a historic thing." The garden honours Otago conscientious objector Archibald Baxter, who refused to fight in World War 1.

Increased supply at equipment sale

PHOTOS: GREGOR RICHARDSON A massive lineup of agricultural machinery and equipment was auctioned at the Glen Islay machinery clearing sale at Wairuna near Clinton over two days last week. A row of tractors on offer at the Glen Islay machinery clearing sale in South Otago last week. The lots to sell on the first day included a 2010 Case track tractor selling for $210,000, a Coolamon grain chaser bin for $180,000, a 2023 Massey Ferguson tractor selling for $165,000, a Claas disco mower for $70,000 and a 8m seed drill for $60,000, online auction platform Bidr shows. Camila Miers, 10, of Hamilton, sits on a Case 600 tractor at the Glen Islay machinery clearing sale near Clinton last week. Carrfields livestock representative Matt McBain said the volume of equipment for sale was the greatest he had seen for several years, which was to be expected from the vendors' about 8000ha of farming land.

Standing in solidarity
REPORT: TIM SCOTT / PHOTO: GREGOR RICHARDSON Protesters gathered in the Octagon by the hundreds at the weekend to stand in solidarity with the transgender community. Saturday's rally was organised by the Dunedin branch of the International Socialist Organisation Aotearoa, in collaboration with other groups. Dunedin branch committee member and protest co-organiser Oscar Bartle said hundreds of people attended. "The turnout was a lot higher than expected, which was really cool. I think people have really had enough and are ready to stand up and fight back." The mood was "really inspirational", he said. The rally was organised in response to New Zealand First's introduction of a member's Bill to define the terms "woman" and "man" in law. The Legislation (Definitions of Woman and Man) Amendment Bill announced last month proposed to define "woman" as "an adult human biological female" and "man" as "an adult human biological male", in the Legislation Act 2019. Member's Bills are usually only debated in the House if selected at random from the ballot.
