Fishermen Need To Venture Into Marketing To Expand Income
KLANG, May 30 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) has urged fishermen nationwide to venture into marketing activities rather than focusing solely on fishing to increase their income. LKIM chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil said the extra step forward is necessary, taking into account that the income of fishermen remained stagnant every year, requiring assistance from many parties including the government. "I myself have done a business review and found that many companies such as supermarkets have made huge profits to the point of being listed on the stock exchange, while they are not the ones who face the rigours of going out to sea. "This matter indirectly raises questions about the status of local fishermen in the country's economic structure, it is very pathetic since many are still living in poverty," he said in Bandar Bukit Tinggi here today. Muhammad Faiz said LKIM is formulating a more aggressive strategy to elevate the status of fishermen to also double up as traders who will be managed by the state fishing association. He said the initiative also has the potential to be realised through the aquaculture sector in line with the government's target to ensure that the aquaculture industry contributes 40 per cent of the national fish supply by 2030. "With the aim ion of establishing the 'Gagasan Nelayan Jaga Nelayan' movement in the next 10 years, I call on all fishermen to increase their confidence so that they are capable of breaking out of the poverty cycle. "From here on, fishermen through their respective associations must change their mindset to streamline the existing governance structure to prevent fishery resources from being exploited by inappropriate parties in the value chain," he said. In another development, Muhammad Faiz also reminded the 40,000 fishermen who received fuel subsidies totalling RM1.6 billion nationwide to comply with the terms to ensure a continuation of the subsidy.

In the same event, the National Fishermen's Association (NEKMAT) also presented zakat totalling RM21,000 to PENEGOR members.

Darul Makmur Stadium Grass Pitch Receives FIFA Nod
KUANTAN, May 30 (Bernama) -- The Darul Makmur Stadium here scored a landmark precedent when its natural grass pitch became the first in Malaysia to receive certification from world governing body FIFA through its Quality Programme for Natural Playing Surfaces. Pahang Communications and Multimedia, Youth, Sports and Non-Governmental Organisations Committee chairman Fadzli Mohamad Kamal said the certificate was issued after the pitch passed a comprehensive assessment by a FIFA-appointed consultancy company, Acousto-Scan Pty Ltd, on April 23 and 24. "The pitch received an excellent rating with a score of 93 per cent after the assessment was conducted covering three main components, namely climate testing, sports performance testing and agronomic testing," he said at a press conference here today. bootstrap slideshow Fadzli also said the assessment included aspects such as soil temperature, humidity, ball bounce, surface hardness, root system, weed content and soil health. "This recognition marks a major success in the technical and maintenance aspects of the national sports field. "I was informed that the 'Bermuda Tifgrand' grass on this field is the first to be planted outside Japan, besides this field having three layers and a water drainage system underneath to speed up the water absorption rate," he said. The field was built and upgraded according to strict FIFA specifications by local contractor, RS Greenmaster (M) Sdn Bhd, which played an important role in this success. The field upgrade project involved a cost of RM1.6 million, of which RM500,000 was contributed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports while RM1.1 million was borne by the state government. He said the contractor had already given them the green light to use the field but it would only be used in one or two months.

Matrix Concepts beats FY25 sales target, eyes RM1.6bil launches in FY26
KUALA LUMPUR: Matrix Concepts Holdings Bhd recorded a 10.4 per cent increase in new property sales to RM1.38 billion for the financial year ended March 31, 2025 (FY25) from RM1.25 billion a year earlier. The growth was driven by strong market demand and an increase in new launches across its diverse development portfolio. The new property sales significantly surpassed the the property developer's sales target of RM1.3 billion, bolstered by strong performances from its projects. This includes its core township developments, Sendayan Developments and Bandar Seri Impian, as well as the Klang Valley high-rise project, Levia Residences. The sales also included the company's first industrial land sales from the highly anticipated Malaysia Vision Valley City (MVV City). Taking advantage of favourable market conditions, Matrix Concepts launched projects with a total gross development value (GDV) of RM1.45 billion in FY25, a 9.8 per cent rise from RM1.32 billion last year. The overall take-up rate for FY25 launches stood at 73 per cent as of March 31, 2025, indicating strong buyer confidence. In FY25, the company's revenue declined 11.2 per cent to RM1.19 billion from RM1.34 billion previously due to the timing of launches and revenue recognition for properties sold in Sendayan Developments and Bandar Seri Impian. Its net profit also fell 12 per cent to RM214.1 million from RM244.3 million previously. Matrix Concepts' unbilled sales stood at RM1.46 billion as of March 2025, providing significant earnings visibility for the next 15 to 18 months. The company declared a fourth quarter interim dividend of 1.35 sen per share that will be paid on July 10, 2025. Mohamad Haslah said the company is expanding its footprint within the high-growth Klang Valley region, particularly Selangor. He said the recent investments have established a robust platform for future developments in the Banting and Sepang areas. "Beyond our core property development activities, we are strategically expanding into high-potential sectors such as hospitality, education and healthcare. "These complementary ventures are designed to create diversified and recurring income streams, strengthening our resilience and enhancing long-term value creation," he added.

NST Leader: Wildlife under siege
HUMANS think the planet was created for us alone. We wilfully forget that it is the home of wildlife, too. How else would you explain the roadkill of an elephant calf along the East-West Highway on May 11? Drivers should know by now that they are passing through a wildlife habitat. It is high time we realised that we are the intruders, not the animals. There are enough warning signs to alert even motorists with minimal concern for the safety of wild animals. Being humane means caring for all creations. Those who gave the go-ahead for the 120km highway, cutting through the Royal Belum State Park and the Temengor Forest Reserve — home to elephants, tigers and tapirs — cannot be excused as being ignorant. Didn't the Public Works Department, as the highway's builders, conduct an environmental assessment prior to construction? Were wildlife crossings not incorporated due to a lack of funds? Since the government managed to raise RM1.6 billion in the 1970s for the highway, it could have found the money to build enough animal crossings. The decline of wildlife will have serious repercussions for the country's ecosystem, and for us as well. The Perak Wildlife and National Parks Department has identified 40 such elephant crossing points. Naturally, in an elephant habitat, they have to hunt for food. Our selfish pursuit of development often overlooks the animals living in our forests. This lack of consideration has only one consequence: the loss of wildlife. The decline of wildlife will have serious repercussions for the country's ecosystem, and for us as well. Given the current rate of animal deaths on our roads, this decline is not a distant possibility. A Bernama report quoted Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad as saying that a total of 2,361 wild animals were killed in collisions with vehicles nationwide between 2020 and May 12 this year. That's a daily loss of one wild animal! Pahang had the highest number of roadkills with 765 animals, followed by Perak (478), Kelantan (224), Terengganu (201), and Negri Sembilan (187). The World Wide Fund for Nature Malaysia (WWF-Malaysia) is right: without more interventions — both immediate and long-term — roadkills will only get worse. For animals, roads and highways are just another part of the forest habitat. But we understand the danger, so it's our responsibility to take the necessary actions to prevent these needless roadkills. The first is to stop destroying animal habitats. This is crucial because, according to WWF-Malaysia, a 2016 study found that elephant roaming areas had shrunk by 68 per cent due to agriculture, infrastructure and land-use change. The rest comes later. Habitat loss forces animals to cross roads more often, the WWF-Malaysia says. The organisation reminds us of a basic truth: the forest was theirs long before the roads were ours. While we are not against development, it must be sustainable — benefiting not only humans, but animals as well. Unsustainable development is not true progress, it is deforestation. Wild animals need their space, just as much as we do.
