The handover ceremony, held at the hospital, was officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister. In his keynote address, Dr Sim expressed appreciation to both organisations for their generous contribution, which he said would significantly enhance mental healthcare services in the state. 'This morning, we are coming together not just to deliver love, but actually deliver with patience and enthusiasm,' he said. The donation is part of a broader initiative totalling RM1.9 million, which also saw Hospital Bau receiving RM511,000 worth of equipment on May 26, and Hospital Lundu receiving RM395,000 on May 27. Dr Sim commended Elder Larry and Sister Yevette Hathaway of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, for their dedication and contributions. He said the contribution is aimed at strengthening hospital operations by equipping healthcare professionals with essential tools, especially in the field of mental health. 'Even though Hospital Sentosa is the only major specialist hospital institute to focus on mental health in Sarawak, this shows how inclusive it is. 'It's always very hard in our community when you say mental hospitals, everybody has this stigma, but they forget that mental health now is really quite common and crying for help in the community,' he said. Dr Sim also highlighted the pressing need for healthcare development in Sarawak, stating that 70 per cent of the state's healthcare facilities are currently in a dilapidated state. He reiterated Sarawak's call for greater autonomy in healthcare management under Article 95C of the Federal Constitution, in line with the Malaysia Agreement 1963. He noted that the Sarawak government remains committed to improving healthcare infrastructure, citing the state's RM1 billion allocation for the upcoming cancer hospital in Kuching. He further emphasised the importance of collaboration between local and international partners to enhance public health services, stating that the impact of current efforts will be felt for years to come. 'What you do today, in 20 years, may be very different. You have to sow the seed. Whether through government efforts or other initiatives, we will continue to evolve and transform,' he said. Also present were Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap, Hospital Sentosa director Dr Rosliwati Mohd Yusoff and Nigel Wee, who represented the President of the Rotary Club of Urban Kuching.

Hannah urges corporate sector to step up support for motorsports

KUALA LUMPUR: Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has called on the corporate sector to play a greater role in supporting motorsports in Malaysia, stressing that government allocations alone are insufficient to meet the sport's development needs. Speaking at a partnership ceremony between CIMB and rising motorsports talent Amer Harris Jefry, Hannah acknowledged the RM5.6 million allocation by the Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) this year but underlined the importance of external support. She said that of the total, RM1.9 million was channelled to the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM), RM450,000 to the state youth and sports departments and RM3.2 million to clubs and associations at the state level. Despite this, Hannah emphasised that motorsports still lacks funding and urged more corporate players to chip in. 'We have a lot more work to do and like I said, RM5.6 million is hardly enough. This is why we encourage the corporate sectors to come in,' she said. Hannah also hopes that future tax incentives can further fuel corporate investments in the sport's development. 'I hope we can roll out more tax initiatives and incentives for corporate sectors to want to invest in sports,' she said.

Some public housing tenants skipped rent for over 2 decades, says KL mayor

Kuala Lumpur mayor Maimunah Sharif said an internal discussion will be held next week on measures to address the mounting rental arrears across PPR and PA units managed by DBKL. PETALING JAYA : Some public housing (PA) tenants have failed to pay rent for up to 26 years, with arrears reaching as high as RM39,140, Kuala Lumpur mayor Maimunah Sharif revealed. She said the monthly rental rate was RM124, excluding maintenance charges. The highest arrears were recorded at the People's Housing Programme (PPR) in Kampung Muhibbah (RM1.9 million) and Desa Rejang (RM1.28 million). To address the issue of mounting rental arrears across PPR and PA units managed by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), which now total RM70 million, she said an internal discussion would be held next week. 'I'll need to assess the situation because the measures we currently take involve meeting tenants face to face, asking why they haven't paid, and locking their water meters. 'We do have the authority to evict non-paying tenants, but most of them are from the B40 group, so we have to consider the situation carefully. 'I'll conduct an analysis and discuss the matter with federal territories minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa,' she told FMT. Maimunah Sharif. Maimunah said tenants often cite financial difficulties as the reason for not paying rent. 'But when we visit their areas, they complain about a lack of parking. I understand that having a car isn't a luxury anymore, it's a necessity. Still, people need to prioritise. 'At the moment, we're not taking strict action so some feel there's room not to pay,' she added. She said that in the upcoming discussions, DBKL would work on developing clearer procedures on housing and rental arrears. AdChoices ADVERTISING DBKL will also issue public notices to warn tenants with outstanding rent so that they are not caught off guard when enforcement begins. 'When we shut off the water supply, they often find a way to pay. Previously, we also introduced a scheme allowing them to settle arrears in instalments if they couldn't pay in full,' Maimunah said.

RM1.9 million in rental arrears at a single PPR site, says DBKL

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) is grappling with longstanding rent arrears in its public housing (PA) units, with some tenants failing to make payments for up to 26 years and individual debts reaching RM39,140. City mayor Maimunah Sharif said total arrears now stand at RM70 million, despite the monthly rental being fixed at just RM124, excluding maintenance charges. According to Free Malaysia Today, the worst cases were recorded at PPR Kampung Muhibbah with RM1.9 million in arrears, followed by Desa Rejang at RM1.28 million. "Some tenants have not made payments for more than two decades. It has become necessary to review our approach to ensure the system remains sustainable," said Maimunah. An internal meeting is scheduled next week to reassess enforcement methods and formulate more structured procedures for dealing with defaulters. "At the moment, we speak directly to tenants, ask for explanations and, in some cases, lock up their water meters," she said. Although DBKL has the legal authority to evict tenants who fail to pay, she said they must tread carefully as most affected households fall under the B40 income bracket. "We will analyse the matter further and bring it to the attention of the federal territories minister, Dr Zaliha Mustafa," she said. Maimunah said that while many tenants cite financial hardship, complaints about parking shortages were also commonly raised. "There may be a perception that strict enforcement won't happen, which could be contributing to the problem," she said. To address the situation, DBKL will begin issuing formal notices to tenants with arrears and establish clearer guidelines on rent collection and enforcement. She added that water supply cuts have previously led to repayments, and tenants had been allowed to settle arrears in instalments.

Some PA tenants owe up to 26 years of rent, arrears over RM39,000

PETALING JAYA: Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif, recently revealed that some Public Housing (PA) tenants have not paid their rent for up to 26 years, accumulating arrears amounting to RM39,140. The monthly rent is RM124, excluding maintenance charges. According to Maimunah, the highest arrears were recorded at the People's Housing Programme (PPR) in Kampung Muhibbah, estimated at RM1.9 million, and in PPR Desa Rejang at RM1.28 million, Free Malaysia Today reported. To address the issue of mounting arrears in both PPR and PA schemes – now totalling RM70 million – Maimunah said a discussion would be held next week. She said that the situation requires face-to-face meetings with tenants to understand the reasons for non-payment and locking their water meters. 'We do have the authority to evict non-paying tenants, but most of them are from the B40 group, so we have to consider the situation carefully. 'I will conduct an analysis and discuss the matter with the Federal Territories Minister, Dr Zaliha Mustafa,' she was quoted as saying. She added that tenants often cite financial difficulties as the reason for not keeping up with rent payments. 'But when we visit their areas, they complain about a lack of parking. I understand that having a car is no longer a luxury but a necessity. Still, people need to prioritise. 'At the moment, we're not taking strict action so some feel there's room not to pay,' she was also quoted as saying. Maimunah also confirmed that Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) would develop clearer procedures for dealing with housing and rental arrears. Furthermore, public notices regarding outstanding rent payments will be issued to warn tenants, ensuring they are aware of the issue before enforcement actions are taken. 'When we shut off the water supply, they often find a way to pay. Previously, we also introduced a scheme allowing them to settle arrears in instalments if they couldn't pay in full,' Maimunah added.
