Ex-Melaka Youth Director Charged with Bribery, False Claim

MELAKA: A former director of the Melaka Youth and Sports Department pleaded not guilty today in the Ayer Keroh Sessions Court to submitting a false claim and accepting bribes. Khairul Adri Rosli, 51, is charged with submitting a payment voucher amounting to RM126,100 for the supply and installation of concrete imprint around the tennis and petanque court walkways at the Melaka Youth and Sports Complex, which was known to contain false particulars as the work was not carried out according to the quoted specifications. He is alleged to have committed the offence at the Melaka Youth and Sports Department office on Dec 8, 2023. The charge, under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti‑Corruption Commission Act 2009, which is punishable under Section 24(2) of the same Act, provides a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine of not less than five times the amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction. The accused also faces four charges of soliciting bribes totalling RM8,000 from a company owner linked to his official duties, between Sept 25, 2023 and June 25, 2024 in the Melaka Tengah district. The charge, under Section 165 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum sentence of two years' imprisonment, a fine, or both. Deputy Public Prosecutor from the MACC, Sharina Farhana Nor Sa'ari, proposed bail to be set at RM25,000 for all charges, with the additional conditions that the accused surrender his passport to the court and report monthly to the Melaka MACC office. Khairul Adri's lawyer, T. Gajendran, asked for a lower bail amount, saying that his client is currently serving in a different department and will be suspended from duty starting today, receiving only half of his salary. Judge Elesabet Paya Wan granted bail of RM20,000 with one surety for all charges. The court set Aug 15 for mention of the case.

Former Melaka govt dept director claims trial to bribery, false claims charges

MELAKA: A 51-year-old former director of the Melaka Youth and Sports Department has claimed trial to five charges of receiving bribes and submitting false claims amounting to RM126,100. Khairol Adri Rosli entered a plea of not guilty after all the charges were read out to him before Sessions judge Elesabet Paya Wan in Ayer Keroh on Tuesday (June 17). On the first charge, the accused is alleged to have submitted false particulars of upgrading works for the tennis and petanque courts at the Melaka State Youth and Sports Complex, amounting to RM126,100. The offence was allegedly committed at the Youth and Sports Department office on Dec 8, 2023. The charge was framed under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, punishable under Section 24(2), which provides for up to 20 years' jail and a fine no less than five times the value of the false claim or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction. For the second to fifth charges, he is alleged to have received RM8,000 from one Shaari So'od, 63, who had a vested interest in the upgrading works of the tennis and petanque courts at the complex. The offences were allegedly committed at four different locations around the Melaka International Trade Centre (MITC) and Bukit Baru here between Sept 25, 2023 and June 25 last year. For these offences, Khairol was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which carries a sentence of up to two years in prison, or a fine, or both if found guilty. DPP Sharina Farhana Nor Sa'ari proposed bail of RM25,000 for all the charges with additional conditions. Lawyer T. Gajendran, representing the accused, appealed for a lower amount as his client has to support his family. The court set bail at RM20,000 for all charges and fixed Aug 15 for next mention.

PAT 2025: 141 Traders Incur Losses Amounting To RM126,850

KANGAR, April 23 (Bernama) -- The total losses suffered by 141 traders during the Perlis East Wind Festival 2025 (PAT 2025) near Arau in February which was affected by rain, amounted to RM126,850. Perlis Tourism, Arts and Culture and Rural Development Committee chairman Abu Bakar Hamzah said there were five trader lots allocated for the PAT 2025, which included Flora, Dry, Special Wet, Wet and Food truck lots. "For the Flora Lot, the total losses were RM2,500, Dry Lot (RM13,500), Special Wet Lot (RM61,100), Wet Lot (RM45,750) and Food truck Lot (RM4,000)," he said during a question and answer session at the Perlis State Legislative Assembly sitting at the State Assembly Complex here today. Abu Bakar was replying to a question by Wan Zikri Afthar Ishak (PN-Tambun Tulang) who wanted to know the estimated losses of entrepreneurs affected during PAT 2025. On Feb 22, Bernama reported that the rice field area in Kampung Lat Seribu, Tambun Tulang near Arau, which was the location for the festival scheduled to be held from Feb 21 to 23, was covered in thick mud after heavy rain in the afternoon of Feb 21, causing the locations of several activities to be changed. The organisation of PAT 2025 is the 13th edition this year, organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) in collaboration with the Perlis State Government, which is managed by the Perlis National Culture and Arts Department (JKKN) and the Perlis State Cultural Council. Abu Bakar said that following the bad weather incident at the PAT 2025 site, traders registered with the organisers were transferred to the State Assembly Complex to continue selling as usual until the last day of the fair. In addition, he said that the follow-up action by the PAT 2025 organisers towards the traders who suffered losses was coordinated by the Event Organiser (EO), namely Syarikat Lanai Kijang Enterprise, through a consolation payment of RM35,800 to the 141 traders concerned. Meanwhile, Abu Bakar said that the branding and restructuring of the fair involved a more inclusive, dynamic, productive and state identity-based approach that would be proposed for the organisation of the next edition.
