Housewife loses over RM150,000 to online job scam

KUALA TERENGGANU: A housewife lost more than RM150,000 after falling victim to a scam syndicate offering a non-existent job. Kuala Terengganu police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said the 30-year-old victim had come across an online job offer on social media on May 9 and expressed interest in the opportunity. He said the victim was instructed to make hotel room bookings using a link provided by the syndicate and was promised a 10 per cent commission based on the amount spent. 'The task was allegedly aimed at boosting hotel ratings. The victim was required to click the link, choose a hotel room, and submit photos and proof of payment after completing each task. 'Excited after receiving commission from the first task, the victim continued to carry out several more assignments, eventually transferring a total of RM158,498.89 in stages to nine different bank accounts,' he said in a statement today. Azli said the victim, who used her father's business capital, started to panic after the promised commission payments failed to materialise. Her attempts to contact the suspect were unsuccessful, prompting her to lodge a police report yesterday morning after realising she had been scammed. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code.

Housewife loses RM158,498 to fake online job scam

KUALA TERENGGANU: A housewife lost RM158,498 after investing money intended as business capital for her father into a non-existent online job scam. Kuala Terengganu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor said the 30-year-old victim had come across an online advertisement for a job offer at around 10pm on May 9. He said the woman expressed interest in the job and clicked the advertisement link, which led her to a WhatsApp conversation with someone claiming to be a job manager. "She was briefed about the job, which allegedly involved boosting hotel ratings. She was promised a 10 per cent commission based on the capital invested," he said in a statement today. Initially, the victim was assigned tasks that required her to click on links, select hotel rooms, send screenshots and make payments as instructed. Azli said the woman received the promised commission after completing the first task. "She then proceeded to the second task and made payments totalling RM158,498 in stages to nine different bank accounts. "However, after completing all payments, the victim did not receive any further commission as promised," he said. Realising she had been duped, the woman lodged a police report at the Kuala Terengganu police station at about 11.42am yesterday.

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police have dismantled a drug distribution syndicate by seizing 51,180g of cannabis, valued at RM158,658, along with two local men in Perai last Saturday. Seberang Prai Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Helmi Aris said that, acting on information and intelligence, a team from the Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (JSJN) apprehended a car carrying two men, aged 45 and 59. "Upon inspecting the vehicle, police found 50 packets of compressed plastic wrap containing dry leaves suspected to be cannabis, weighing 51,180g, with a street value of RM158,658. "This amount is sufficient for 102,360 drug users," he said in a statement this evening. Helmi said that urine tests found both suspects negative for drugs but each had a criminal record related to drugs and crime. He also said that the police seized two cars worth RM81,000 believed to have been purchased from the proceeds of drug sales. "Both men will be remanded for seven days, until May 17, to assist investigations and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. – BERNAMA
