Kosovo honours Anwar with Order of Independence

The award was presented by Kosovo's President, Dr Vjosa Osmani Sadriu, in recognition of Malaysia's consistent support for Kosovo's independence and state-building efforts, as well as Anwar's personal commitment to strengthening bilateral relations. 'This honour also reflects your unwavering dedication to further deepening the ties between our two nations,' Osmani said during a joint press conference with Anwar in Putrajaya yesterday. 'Thank you and 'terima kasih' on behalf of the people of Kosovo.' The ceremony held at the Perdana Putra Complex was attended by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, foreign diplomats and senior government officials. According to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office, the award signifies Kosovo's highest recognition of individuals who have made significant contributions to the country's independence. 'The conferment recognises Malaysia's unwavering support for Kosovo's statehood and post-independence development, as well as Prime Minister Anwar's steadfast commitment to strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries,' the statement said. Earlier, Osmani, who is on a four-day official visit to Malaysia, was accorded an official welcome, which included an inspection of a guard of honour mounted by three officers and 103 personnel from the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (Ceremonial), led by Mejar Muhammad Fikri Senan. The government of Kosovo will also confer the Order of Independence on the late former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in appreciation of his pivotal role during a defining period in Kosovo's history. 'Under his stewardship, Malaysia became one of the first countries to recognise Kosovo's independence on Oct 30, 2008,' the statement added. Osmani arrived in Malaysia yesterday, marking her first visit to the country since taking office on April 4, 2021. In 2024, bilateral trade between Malaysia and Kosovo totalled RM28.55mil. Malaysian exports, valued at RM25.92mil, include palm oil, electrical and electronic products and other manufactured goods, while imports from Kosovo, worth RM2.63mil, primarily consisted of raw materials and semi-precious stones.

PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has been conferred Kosovo's highest civilian honour, the Order of Independence, by the republic's President Dr Vjosa Osmani Sadriu on Friday (May 2). The Order of Independence is awarded to individuals who have played a significant role in supporting the country's independence. During a joint press conference aired live, Vjosa Osmani said this is to mark Malaysia's continuous support and role in supporting the country's independence and state building. "This is also for your (Anwar's) personal unwavering dedication to further fostering our bilateral relations. "Thank you and 'terima kasih' on behalf of the people of Kosovo," she said. Osmani-Sadriu will also be posthumously conferring the Order of Independence on the late former prime minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in recognition of his leadership during a pivotal period in Kosovo's history. Under his stewardship, Malaysia became one of the earliest countries to recognise Kosovo's independence on Oct 30, 2008. Diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Kosovo were formally established on March 18, 2011. In 2024, total bilateral trade between Malaysia and Kosovo reached RM28.55mil (US$6.0mil), with Malaysia's exports to the republic valued at RM25.92mil (US$5.5mil), and imports at RM2.63mil (US$550,000). Key Malaysian exports include palm oil, electrical and electronic products, and manufactured goods, while imports from Kosovo mainly consist of raw materials and semi-precious stones. The conferment recognises Malaysia's unwavering support for Kosovo's statehood and post-independence development, as well as Anwar's steadfast commitment to strengthening bilateral ties between both countries, said the Prime Minister's Office. Among past recipients of the Order are Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates (2014); George W. Bush, former President of the United States (2018); Micheline Calmy-Rey, former President of Switzerland (2022); and the late Anne Marie Lizin, former President of the Belgian Senate (2024).

Also present were Deputy Prime Ministers Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, Cabinet ministers, foreign diplomats and senior government officials. After the ceremony, Osmani signed the guest book and then proceeded to a bilateral meeting with Anwar. SEPANG: Kosovo President Dr Vjosa Osmani Sadriu arrived in Malaysia on Thursday (May 1) for a four-day official visit, marking her first visit to the country since assuming office on April 4, 2021. Osmani, who arrived at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA Terminal 1) here on a commercial flight, was warmly received at the Bunga Raya Complex at 5.25pm by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek. Upon arrival, Osmani inspected a guard of honour mounted by 28 officers and personnel members from the First Battalion of the Royal Ranger Regiment (Ceremony) led by Captain Muhammad Nafis Norshid. According to Wisma Putra, Osmani will be accorded an official welcoming ceremony at Perdana Putra Complex on Friday (May 2), followed by a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The discussions are expected to focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation in key sectors, including trade, investment, education, and people-to-people exchanges. Both leaders are expected to also exchange views on regional and international matters of mutual interest, including Malaysia's Chairmanship of Asean this year.
