TM posts lower 1Q net profit of RM401mil but revenue edges up
KUALA LUMPUR: Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) recorded a lower net profit of RM401.25 million in the first quarter ended March 31, 2025, compared with RM424.81 million in the corresponding quarter last year. Its revenue, however, rose slightly by 0.5 per cent to RM2.85 billion from RM2.83 billion previously, driven primarily by higher contributions from data, other telecommunication services and the education segment. TM said its first quarter revenue performance was in line with expectations, coming within the projected low single-digit growth range. "Growth in business-to-business (B2B) digital solutions and sustained demand in the carrier-to-carrier (C2C) segment helped offset the softer business-to-consumer (B2C) performance,' it said in a stock exchange filing. TM said it remains focused on strengthening its core operations, scaling enterprise and digital services, and enhancing cost efficiency to stay on track with its 2025 strategic commitments. - Bernama

TM's 1Q net profit down 5.5% on 5G costs despite stable revenue
TELEKOM Malaysia Bhd (TM) saw a 5.5% year-on-year drop in net profit to RM401.26 million for the first quarter ended March 31, 2025 (1Q25), down from RM424.81 million a year earlier, mainly due to 5G access costs and higher device expenses. Revenue inched up 0.5% to RM2.85 billion, supported by stronger business-to-business (B2B) digital solutions, carrier-to-carrier (C2C) demand, and the education segment, helping offset weaker business-to-consumer (B2C) performance. '1Q25 revenue grew as expected, within the projected low single-digit range,' the group said. Operating costs rose 7.6% year-on-year to RM1.8 billion, though lower net finance costs helped partially offset the pressure. TM invested RM280 million, or 9.8% of revenue, in capital expenditure focused on digital infrastructure such as data centres, domestic fibre, and submarine cables. Looking ahead, group CEO Amar Huzaimi Md Deris said TM is focusing on core strengths to tap into opportunities like data centres, GPU-as-a-Service, cloud, and smart services, aiming for disciplined execution and long-term value creation. — TMR

Empowering youth to sustain growth
KUALA LUMPUR: Advanced infrastructure, a plentiful workforce and a mature business ecosystem have made Selangor well-positioned to excel in innovation-based development. Business and youth groups believe that Selangor's growth momentum would be accelerated even further with infrastructure and economic opportunities tailored to its youth. The state broke its revenue-collection record last year by raking in RM2.85 billion and is the highest contributor to the country's gross domestic product, making it a key driver of the economy. Experts say keeping Selangor's growth momentum going needs infrastructure and economic opportunities that empower youth. Selangor Youth Community (SAY) chief executive officer Aiman Syafiq Nazri said proper access to facilities and services was vital in creating sustainable and inclusive communities. "Reliable, safe and affordable public transport is essential to ensuring young people, particularly those from B40 backgrounds, can access education, work and community opportunities without barriers," he said. Aiman cited the upcoming Kompleks Sukan Shah Alam (KSSA) as an example of forward-thinking infrastructure. He noted that the Selangor government and Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI) had involved youths in its planning. Beyond accessibility, Aiman also called for greater recognition of creativity as a cornerstone of youth empowerment and community wellness. "This includes providing accessible creative spaces, affordable workshops and platforms for emerging talent, especially in areas outside major city centres," he said. "Many young working individuals are facing burnout, and creativity offers a much-needed outlet. "By embedding the arts within our social and development frameworks, we not only nurture talent but also build healthier, more resilient communities," Aiman added. He cited SAY's Selangor Creative Arts Movement as a model initiative that supported grassroots artists and young creatives through photography challenges, street art and music festivals. Small and Medium Enterprises Association (Samenta) national president Datuk William Ng said the association believed that every new development, whether commercial, housing or industrial, should include a space for youth. "This could take the form of affordable business stalls, entrepreneurial incubation spaces, or skills centres. "We need to view development not just from an economic perspective, but also from a social perspective, ensuring that young people have the space to try, fail, rise and succeed." Ng said it was important to foster entrepreneurship among young people, highlighting the need for mentor-mentee programmes, micro grants and soft skills training, such as communication, leadership and critical thinking. "Based on our estimates, between 18 and 22 per cent of the workforce in SMEs is made up of youth aged between 18 and 35. "However, it is estimated that only about five per cent of all SME owners or operators are youths. "This shows that many young people still do not see entrepreneurship as a primary career path." Ng said initiatives such as licence exemptions for young entrepreneurs starting small businesses can foster even greater participation among the group. Malaysia Youth Council information chief Syafiq Ridzwan Jamaluddin acknowledged the state government's efforts in setting up various initiatives for youths. These, he said, were critical for fostering creativity, good mental health and social connection among the group. "Let's see more safe spaces for youth, where facilities can promote and develop competencies and capacities, rather than just more shopping malls," he added. He cited the Uram Extreme Park in Kazan, Russia, as an example of infrastructure that caters to both professional athletes and the general public. The park features Olympic-grade training facilities alongside accessible areas for amateur enthusiasts, fostering community engagement and promoting youth development and empowerment. Syafiq said empowering youth should include building ecosystems where they can continuously grow, innovate, lead and thrive across all levels of their environment. "Planning must be guided by demographic mapping and sociographic surveys to ensure that projects align with the needs and aspirations of local communities, allowing for more positive and sustainable outcomes," he said.

Dr Annuar assures RTP projects involving Nangka longhouses will be completed by Gawai

SIBU (April 21): A total of 16 projects under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) 2024 worth RM2.85 million in longhouses across the constituency of Nangka are expected to be completed by this year's Gawai celebrations. These projects include various infrastructure repair and improvement works involving ruai (communal hall), tanju (veranda), roads, ceilings, parking lots, drainage, and public toilets in the longhouses. Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, who is also Nangka assemblyman Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, assured that despite initial delays, all projects will be completed before Gawai. 'Today, I came to the ground to observe the progress of the RTP 2024 projects. Although they were supposed to be completed last year, we ensure everything will be ready before Gawai,' he told reporters after visiting Rumah Justin today. Dr Annuar further explained that Rumah Justin has received a total allocation of RM600,000 since 2018, covering repairs for the upper and lower communal hall, veranda, and other basic amenities. 'Recently, 12 residential units on the ground floor of the longhouse will be improved to enhance residents' comfort,' he said. Other longhouses that were visited include Rumah Dick, Rumah Bungan, Rumah Marai, Rumah Miskin, Rumah Jok, Rumah Kawau, and Rumah Bongkong. Additionally, Dr Annuar was asked about project implementation based on the Bill of Quantities (BQ) to avoid the need for Change Notices (NOC), which often delay processes. 'Previously, we provided ceilings, but sometimes they were insufficient. So, we had to issue an NOC, which delayed implementation. Now, when implementing agencies propose projects, they prepare estimates, and we approve them immediately. There are no funding shortages, and execution is expedited. I consider this the best approach,' he explained. Meanwhile, Rumah Bongkong, the oldest longhouse in Nangka, is currently undergoing comprehensive renovations involving walls, windows, doors, ceilings, and electrical rewiring. The restoration, costing RM500,000, aims to maintain the traditional identity of the longhouse. 'This longhouse has 19 doors and is the oldest in DUN Nangka. That is why I want to preserve it, ensuring its original identity and structure remains intact,' Dr Annuar said. dr annuar rapaee longhouses Nangka Rural Transformation Programme
