Penang Customs seizes vape devices, liquid worth RM5.17 million
BUTTERWORTH: The Penang Customs Department seized 86,086 electronic cigarette (vape) devices and 996.5 litres of vape liquid, worth RM5.17 million including taxes, in two separate raids conducted last April. State Customs director Rohaizad Ali said the raids, carried out at the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) and Port Klang, also led to the arrest of three men, including a Chinese national. He said the first raid took place at 1.15 pm on April 3, when the Enforcement Division's Operations Unit inspected a container that had arrived at NBCT from China. 'The inspection uncovered 14,200 units of electronic cigarette devices and 210 bottles of vape liquid that were undeclared during import, alongside other merchandise. The total estimated value of the goods was RM1.33 million, with duties amounting to RM205,400. 'A local man acting as an agent and a Chinese national who claimed to be the exporter were arrested. This marks the first vape-related seizure in Penang this year that has led to arrests,' he said at a press conference held at the Bagan Jermal Enforcement Storage facility today. Rohaizad said the inspection found that the container had been declared as carrying plastic goods, but the vape devices and liquids were hidden among other items and not declared. In a separate raid at 11 am on April 10, authorities seized 71,886 electronic cigarette devices and 786.5 litres of vape liquid worth RM3.64 million, including tax, following the inspection of another container from China, this time at Port Klang. A local man in his 40s, who acted as an agent, was arrested in connection with the case. 'The container was declared to contain belts and wallets, but the inspection uncovered undeclared vape devices and liquids mixed with the declared items,' he said. Rohaizad added that further investigations are ongoing for both cases under Section 133(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967.

Customs cripples vape smuggling, seizes RM5mil worth of devices and liquids
BUTTERWORTH: The Customs Department seized more than RM5 million worth of electronic cigarette (vape) devices and liquids in two major anti-smuggling operations conducted in April. These are the first such seizures involving vape products this year. The first raid took place at the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) in Penang on April 3, where enforcement officers discovered 14,200 vape devices and 210 litres of vape liquid and gel hidden in a shipping container. Penang Customs director Rohaizad Ali said the shipment, which originated from China, had been falsely declared as plastic materials. "The seized items are estimated to be worth RM1.33 million, with unpaid duties and taxes amounting to RM205,400," he said at a press conference today. Two suspects — a shipping agent and a Chinese national in their 30s — were detained. Rohaizad said the foreigner admitted that the items belonged to him. A second raid was carried out at Port Klang, Selangor, on April 10, where officers intercepted a shipment containing 71,886 vape devices and 786.5 litres of vape liquids. "The goods in this case were also undeclared, and the container was declared as carrying wallets, belts and similar items," Rohaizad said. The total value of the second seizure is estimated at RM2.8 million, with potential tax and duty losses exceeding RM830,000. A shipping agent, in his 40s, was arrested in connection with the case. Both cases are being investigated under the Customs Act 1967, which provides for fines of up to RM500,000, imprisonment for up to seven years, or both, for false declarations. Rohaizad stressed that smuggling has serious implications for the nation's economy and security. "We urge the public to play an active role in combating smuggling. "People are encouraged to report any suspicious activities related to the smuggling of cigarettes, alcoholic beverages, fireworks, drugs, vehicles, and other contraband. "We rely heavily on community support to safeguard our borders and protect the nation's interests," he said. Members of the public can provide information confidentially via the Customs Toll-Free Line at 1-800-88-8855 or by contacting their nearest customs office.

30 to testify, including bankers, in Palestinian kidnapping case
KUALA LUMPUR: Some 30 witnesses, including several bank officers, have been lined up to testify in a case involving the kidnapping of a Palestinian man. The trial before High Court judge Justice K. Muniandy involves 13 accused persons. Deputy public prosecutor Harvind Raja informed the judge that the case from three years ago will include testimonies from several bank officers. 'We will prepare witness statements for them,' he said. Justice Muniandy then instructed the prosecution to file the statements before the next mention date on May 23. Hearing dates are between July 7 and July 11. The 13 accused were first charged in October 2022 at a Magistrate's Court. They are Edy Ko'im Said, 41; Mohamad Norakmal Hassan, 42; Dody Junaidi, 43; Tengku Arif Bongsu Tengku Hamid, 40; Mohamad Naziree Mustapha, 40; Faizull Hardey Mohd Isa, 41; Muhammad Iqmal Abdul Rahis, 26. The others include Mohamad Sufian Saly, 24; Muhammad Al Hatim Mohd Fauzi, 22; Nidarahayu Zainal, 35; Raibafie Amdan, 40; Mohd Zaidi Mohd Zain, 57; and Tengku Hazarul Ismail Tengku Hamid, 52. They allegedly kidnapped Omar ZM Albelbaisy Raeda to obtain information to deactivate computer software used to hack mobile phones. They allegedly committed the offence at Jalan Mayang here at 10.40pm on Sept 28. All of them are charged under Section 3 of the Kidnapping Act 1961, read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code. They are liable to the death penalty or life imprisonment and whipping if found guilty. Previously, in December 2023, the High Court approved the transfer of the case to the Sessions Court for trial. The prosecution, however, appealed against the decision for transfer, and on Aug 7, 2024, the Court of Appeal ordered that the case be tried in the Kuala Lumpur High Court. The same court will also hear a money laundering case involving Nidarahayu and her husband, Raibafie. Nidarahayu faces 17 charges related to transferring and disposing of RM205,636.32 through her CIMB account to multiple individuals. Raibafie is accused of receiving RM30,350 from Nidarahayu. The High Court granted RM50,000 bail to each of the 13 individuals last year, along with two sureties.
