Anwar attends Shangri-La Dialogue, strengthens regional security talks

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will undertake a working visit to the Republic of Singapore tomorrow (May 31) to attend the 22nd International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Shangri-La Dialogue 2025. The annual forum is regarded as a premier platform for global and regional leaders to engage in high-level discussions on pressing security and defence matters. In a statement, Wisma Putra said Anwar's participation — under Malaysia's current role as Asean chair — reflected international recognition of the country's leadership in promoting peace and security across the region. During the visit, Anwar is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with Singapore's Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong. The two leaders are expected to review the state of bilateral relations and exchange views on regional and global developments of mutual interest. Anwar will also pay a courtesy call on Singapore's President Tharman Shanmugaratnam. "Malaysia and Singapore, as close neighbours and key Asean partners, share a robust and multi-faceted relationship across a wide range of sectors. This year also marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries," said Wisma Putra. In 2024, Singapore was Malaysia's second-largest trading partner globally and the largest within ASEAN. Bilateral trade grew by 8.9 per cent to RM396.22 billion (USD86.69 billion), comprising RM230.86 billion (USD50.53 billion) in exports to Singapore and RM143.73 billion (USD31.45 billion) in imports.
