Undeclared by the tonne: Perlis Customs seizes goods worth over RM640,000
PADANG BESAR: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department in Perlis has seized various undeclared goods ranging from 28 tonnes of frozen chicken to over 7,500 motorcycle tyres, worth a total of RM645,832.52, in operations this month. Perlis Customs director Ismail Hashim (pic) said the seizures, made between May 5 and 20, included cigarettes, liquor and tyres totalling RM379,756.52 while the frozen chicken seized was valued at RM266,076. "The estimated tax and duties from the seizure is RM196,173.50,' he told a press conference at the enforcement store here on Wednesday (May 28). He said the frozen chicken was seized during an inspection of a container at the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) Complex here on May 5. The seizure of 7,526 motorcycle tyres worth RM345,009 was discovered during an inspection of two containers at Port Klang, Selangor on May 20. Both cases are being investigated under Section 133(1)(a) of the Customs Act 1967 for making incorrect declarations or falsifying documents. On May 17, Perlis Customs carried out two raids, one on a premises in Taiping, Perak where it seized 24,210 cigarettes and 113.25 litres of liquor worth a total of RM11,173.52; and the other in Sungai Petani where they seized 73,040 cigarettes worth RM23,574. Ismail said investigations into these two seizures are being carried out under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 for possessing, importing or exporting goods that are subject to duty or prohibited without proper authorisation. – Bernama

Over 37,000 notices issued under Control of Smoking Products Act in six months
KUALA TERENGGANU: The Health Ministry has issued 37,381 notices for various offences under the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 since the law came into effect on Oct 1, up to March 31. Health deputy director-general (Public Health) Datuk Dr Norhayati Rusli said the notices were issued in 10,212 operations conducted nationwide. ALSO READ: Control of Smoking Products Act to be enforced prudently, says Dzulkefly She added that 116 cases have been brought to court involving offences under the Act, involving Section 7(1), the Prohibition of Advertising of Tobacco Products; Section 9(1), Prohibition of Promotion or Sponsorship of Tobacco Products; Section 10(1), Prohibition of Sale of Tobacco Products; Section 11(1), Prohibition of Sale of Imitation Tobacco Products; and Section 12(1), Prohibition of Tobacco Products as Gifts. During the same period, the ministry seized 11,563 smoking products valued at RM266,833.10. ALSO READ: Retailers stop displaying smoking products "Previously, the ministry conducted educational enforcement involving 206,657 persons engaged in the sale of cigarettes, to ensure they understand and comply with the provisions of the Act,' she said at the launching of enforcement operations under Ops Cakna Penguatkuasaan Undang-Undang Kesihatan Awam Siri 2/2025 here on Monday (April 21). Also present was Terengganu Health Department director Datuk Dr Kasemani Embong. Dr Norhayati added that the ministry takes smoking-related offences at gazetted no-smoking areas seriously and will intensify enforcement operations nationwide this year. – Bernama
