Ganja buds disguised as clothes, pillowcases seized at KLIA

KUANTAN: A drug smuggling attempt involving a large consignment of cannabis buds worth about RM1.4 million was foiled by the Customs Department following a series of inspections on May 5. The parcels, falsely declared as containing T-shirts and pillowcases, were intended for delivery to Europe. The drugs were detected when several packages scanned at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Mail and Courier Centre showed suspicious images resembling organic material. Pahang Customs director Mohd Asri Seman said the discovery was made during routine inspections carried out between 3.10pm and 3.30pm. "In the first case, our officers uncovered some 6,200g of drugs, valued at RM666,400, falsely declared as pillowcases at 3.10pm. A second find followed roughly 10 minutes later — a parcel weighing 3,200g, worth RM313,600, declared as shirts. "At 3.30pm, we intercepted a third batch of drugs, weighing around 4,340g and valued at RM425,320, also disguised as shirts," he told reporters at the Sultan Ahmad Shah Customs Complex in Indera Mahkota today. Asri said that the syndicate had used courier services to transport the drugs abroad, with Malaysia believed to have been used as a transit point. "Two of the parcels originated from Terengganu, and one from Selangor. The syndicate is believed to have smuggled the drugs into Malaysia from a neighbouring country. "To put it in perspective, one kilogram of cannabis buds is valued at about RM98,000, compared to RM3,000 per kg for compressed cannabis," he added. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction.

Over RM1 million sales by student-run firms

Published on: Thursday, May 01, 2025 Published on: Thu, May 01, 2025 Text Size: Andi (center) presents the Best PROTUNE Company Award to SMK Balung Tawau. Kota Kinabalu: Student-run companies, under the Tunas Niaga (PROTUNe) programme in the State, recorded a total sales of RM1,405,430 over a period of nine months in 2024. Assistant Minister of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship (Sabah), Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryadi Bandy, said this achievement also included a net profit of RM313,957 as a result of the direct involvement of the students in business activities. 'The objective of PROTUNe is not just to build business skills among secondary school students, but also to inculcate values of creativity, innovation, and leadership. 'More importantly, the programme also helps in the development of self-identity, courage, and agility in students, enabling them to face the challenges of the real business world,' he said. Andi said this while officiating the PROTUNe Convention Award Ceremony for Sabah State 2024 on Tuesday. According to him, the programme, organised by Sedcovest Holdings Sdn Bhd in collaboration with the Sabah State Education Department, had successfully cultivated an entrepreneurial spirit at the school level through practical training and field exposure for students. During the event, he also expressed appreciation for the outstanding success of the student company, Michaelian Millionaires from St Michael Secondary School, Penampang, which won Best Project and Best Presenter at the KPM-BSN National Financial Literacy Convention 2024. To add further acclaim, the Michaelian Millionaires also represented the country at the Thailand Inventors Day 2024 in the rural industry field project category. 'This proves that Sabah students are capable of excelling on the international stage if given the right opportunities, guidance, and exposure,' Andy said. He added that the Ministry is committed to supporting various entrepreneurial initiatives through agencies like Sedco and Sedcovest, including providing training, mentoring, and conducive infrastructure for students to start their businesses. 'Programmes like this are among the strategic steps to reduce the unemployment rate, because it opens doors for students to become job creators, not just job seekers,' he said. Andi also urged all PROTUNe participants to maintain their entrepreneurial spirit and use the experience gained as a foundation for success in facing the era of digitalisation. A total of 10 award categories were contested at the convention to recognise the contributions and achievements of participants, including Best Kiosk Award, Best Creative Product, Best Service, and Best PROTUNe Company. Also present were Sedcovest Holdings Sdn Bhd Chairman Datuk Rubbin Guribah, a representative of Sabah Education Department director Datu Asrah Datuu Ambas, Sedco Group Deputy General Manager Azrul Ahmad and Sedcovest General Manager Abdul Rahim Mohd Zain. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Court allows Daim's widow to challenge IRB over alleged RM313mil in arrears

SHAH ALAM: The High Court today granted leave to Toh Puan Na'imah Khalid to proceed with her judicial review application to quash the Inland Revenue Board's claims that she allegedly had not settled assessments worth over RM313 million. Na'imah's lawyer S. Saravana Kumar said judge Dr Shahnaz Sulaiman granted the leave after ruling that his client's application had merits. "The judge said the attorney-general's objection that the application is vexatious and frivolous is not sustainable. "On that basis, the court has granted the leave application. So, now we will go to a substantive hearing. "We have two weeks to serve notice to the IRB that leave has been granted," he said after proceedings. Na'imah, 68, the widow of former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, was not present in court today. During proceedings, Saravana appeared with co-lawyer Dharshini Sharma while the Attorney-General's Chambers was represented by federal counsel Sheryn Yong. In February, Saravana had told the court that the IRB's notice of additional taxation issued against Na'imah in August last year was flawed and unlawful. He had said Na'imah was being double taxed on her income despite Section 45(2)(a) of the Income Tax Act 1967 allowing a wife to be jointly taxed with her husband. He said imposing the same tax on Na'imah constituted double taxation, which led to their judicial review application. Na'imah filed a judicial review application naming the IRB director-general as respondent. She described the agency's decision to raise the Notice of Additional Assessment for 2018 as tainted with illegality, impropriety, irrationality, abuse of process and erroneous. Previously, Na'imah failed in her bid to obtain an interim stay against the payment after Shahnaz ruled that there was no exceptional circumstances in the case. However, the Court of Appeal granted Na'imah a postponement on the payment pending her appeal at the Court of Appeal.
