Cristiano Ronaldo to stay at Al Nassr until 2027

RIYADH (Saudi Arabia): Cristiano Ronaldo inked a two-year extension with Saudi Arabia's Al Nassr, the club announced today, following months of speculation over which team he would sign for next season. "Cristiano Ronaldo is staying at @AlNassrFC until 2027," the club wrote in a post on X. Minutes before the official confirmation, the team posted a teaser video, with the 40-year-old Ronaldo walking along a beachfront and saying: "Al Nassr forever." The Portuguese superstar arrived in 2023 in the kingdom to play with the club, heralding a rush of players in the latter stages of their careers to the oil-rich country. Last month, Ronaldo posted "This chapter is over" hours after the Saudi Pro League wrapped up with Al Nassr finishing third and trophyless once again. "Ronaldo's presence is a key factor in developing the Saudi league in the last two years and a half. He opens the door for elite and young players to come to Saudi Arabia," a source from the Public Investment Fund (PIF), a major investor in Saudi football, told AFP last month. The oil-funded PIF, the sovereign wealth fund behind a number of big-ticket Saudi investments, controls a group of Pro League clubs including Al Nassr, Al Hilal and Al Ahli. Ronaldo's announcement in May came just months after Brazilian star Neymar ended his injury-plagued 18-month stay in January, after playing just seven times for Al Hilal – on a reported salary of around US$104 million (RM440 million) a year. Although Ronaldo was the Pro League's top scorer with 25 goals, he has been unable to win a Saudi or continental trophy with Al Nassr, who lost in the Asian Champions League semi-finals last month. Last year, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner said he could end his career with Al Nassr, the Riyadh team favoured by a number of Saudi royals. Saudi Arabia has shaken up football by spending heavily on stars from Europe, starting with Ronaldo's move, and the desert nation will host the World Cup in 2034. - AFP

Gaga mania hits Rio as fans camp out for hours ahead of historic beachfront show

RIO DE JANEIRO, May — Rio de Janeiro's iconic Copacabana Beach was filling up fast Saturday with excited fans of Lady Gaga, hours before the American superstar is to perform at a free mega-concert. Some fans — known affectionately as Gaga's 'Little Monsters' — were already in line at daybreak. As new arrivals emerged from nearby Metro stations they were pounced on by strolling vendors, offering everything from paper fans to sarongs bearing their idol's image. They waited in long lines to pass through metal detectors before gaining access to the beach. Local authorities have deployed a massive security force for the concert, including 5,000 officers, drones and both surveillance and facial recognition cameras. Rio officials expected a turnout of perhaps 1.6 million people, which they estimate could bring US$100 million (RM440 million) into the local economy — nearly 30 per cent more than last year's free Madonna concert. The performance Saturday is part of a promotional tour for 'Mayhem,' Gaga's eighth album. Its songs have been huge hits on streaming platforms. They include 'Abracadabra' and 'Die With a Smile' — recorded with Bruno Mars, it earned Lady Gaga her 14th Grammy. 'I got here at 7:40 this morning,' 22-year-old Alisha Duarte told AFP. 'So far, it's going well. It'll get more complicated tonight when it's going to get super crowded, but we'll survive — Lady Gaga is worth it!' Duarte was trying to beat the heat with the help of a straw-coloured fan, a symbol of the LGBT community that was well-represented Saturday at Copacabana. Alan Jones, a hair stylist who had come from the southern state of Santa Catarina, showed off a skull tattoo on his left arm, which he said was inspired by Gaga's 'Born This Way,' his favourite song. 'It was thanks to this song that I began to accept myself for who I am,' he said. Luan Messias, 28, had spent the night on a bus from Itanhaem in neighbouring Sao Paulo state. 'I can't wait for her to sing 'Abracadabra,' it's great to dance to, like her early stuff,' Messias said. Lady Gaga has not toured in Brazil since 2012. She was supposed to be a headliner at 2017's Rock in Rio festival but had to cancel for health reasons. — AFP

Ex-council engineer denied higher payout for wrongful dismissal

PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal today dismissed the appeal of a former Seberang Prai Municipal Council engineer who was seeking higher compensation following his wrongful dismissal in 2013. Mohd Sobri Che Hassan, 49, had sought damages covering the period from the Federal Court's ruling in 2019 up to 2035, the year he would have reached the mandatory retirement age of 60. His claim also included pension, gratuity, and other employment-related benefits, which had been previously dismissed by the High Court. In a unanimous decision, the Court of Appeal's three-member panel, chaired by Justice Datuk Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali, upheld the High Court's ruling, which had capped Mohd Sobri's compensation at RM440,000. The sum awarded represents six years' worth of salary, bonuses, and a golden handshake payment, calculated from the date of his dismissal on Dec 3, 2013, to the Federal Court's decision on Oct 21, 2019. Justice Nazlan, delivering the court's decision, affirmed that the High Court had correctly assessed the quantum of damages. Justice Mohd Nazlan held that Mohd Sobri was not entitled to any benefits beyond Oct 21, 2019, which is the date of the Federal Court's ruling. Sitting alongside Justices Datuk Azimah Omar and Datuk Dr Alwi Abdul Wahab, Justice Nazlan also ordered Mohd Sobri to pay RM10,000 in costs. The case originated from Mohd Sobri's dismissal in 2013 after he was found guilty of breaching disciplinary rules. His application for judicial review against the Seberang Prai Municipal Council's disciplinary authority and the municipal council was dismissed by the High Court in 2015. However, in 2017, the Court of Appeal allowed his appeal, quashed the dismissal via a certiorari order, and directed that damages be assessed. On Oct 21, 2019, the Federal Court upheld the Court of Appeal's decision, affirming the certiorari order that quashed Mohd Sobri's dismissal. However, the Federal Court also ruled that any compensation due was limited to the period between the date of his dismissal and the date of the Federal Court's decision. Pursuant to that ruling, the High Court assessed the quantum of damages and, on April 4 last year, awarded Mohd Sobri RM440,000. The court, however, dismissed his claims for compensation extending to his mandatory retirement in 2035, as well as claims for pension, gratuity, loss of promotion opportunities, bonuses, medical benefits, damages for embarrassment, and legal costs. At today's hearing, Mohd Sobri was represented by counsel Vijaya Navaratnam and Loh Jia Chun, while the respondents were represented by Karin Lim Ai Ching, M. Murgan and Clifford Ong Zun Lung. — Bernama
