Naval officer receives JPP award for heroic Teluk Batik rescue
KUALA LUMPUR: While onlookers could only scream helplessly on the beach, Lieutenant Commander Mohd Firdaus Arbaain acted decisively, diving into the sea and swimming swiftly towards an overturned tourist boat to save lives, including two young children crying in fear. The incident, which occurred at Teluk Batik beach, Perak, in August 2023, was recalled with full reverence today as the Executive Officer of KD Sri Indera Sakti was the sole recipient of the Bintang Jasa Perkasa Persekutuan (JPP) at the Federal Awards, Medals and Honours Investiture Ceremony in conjunction with the Official Birthday of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, at Istana Negara here today. For Mohd Firdaus, 42, the award was not solely his, but a recognition of every hero and heroine of the nation who continued to serve the country and its people. 'This is also a recognition for the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) in particular, and the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) in general. 'I also dedicate this award to my family... when the incident happened, my wife and children were also at the scene,' he told Bernama after the ceremony. Recalling the incident, Mohd Firdaus, who was then spending leisure time with his family, said he never expected that day would become a life-changing moment for many, including himself. While preparing to have a meal, he said his wife saw a boat carrying 15 people almost capsizing, and in less than a minute, it overturned. He added that the screams of the passengers and the cries of children after the boat overturned spurred him into action, drawing on his ten years of experience as a member of the RMN's Naval Special Warfare Force (PASKAL). 'I mustered the courage to swim from the shore to the boat's location and handed over all the life jackets to the victims. I also helped to put life jackets on the two children of (Mohammad) Hafiz (Johari),' he said. In the incident, Mohammad Hafiz's wife, Nurul Afiqah Abdullah Sani, was found trapped under the overturned boat and died while receiving treatment at Manjung Hospital. His sibling and two children, along with 10 other individuals, survived. Mohd Firdaus said that although nearly two years had passed, the incident had left a profound impact on him. He said he got to meet up with the family last year when he was invited to be a guest on a podcast programme held in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan, in conjunction with the Malaysian Armed Forces Day celebration. 'Only after the programme did he (Mohammad Hafiz) find out who had saved him and his family... I immediately went to meet him and his children in Parit Buntar. I also recently met them again in Langkawi during the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA)... I brought them on a tour of the ship and the rest of the exhibition. 'I continue to maintain our bond because I still remember the condition of his children at that time... screaming, crying, begging for help... I saw them as if they were my own,' he said.

LIMA'25: KD Lekiu, KM Tun Fatimah Remain The Pulse Of The Country's Maritime Defence
By Nur Syahidayah Mahasan LANGKAWI, May 23 (Bernama) -- In the face of increasingly complex and challenging maritime threats to nations, the Royal Malaysian Navy's (RMN) KD Lekiu and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency's (MMEA), KM Tun Fatimah remain steadfast in sailing the seas to protect the maritime borders of the country. Despite their different roles and specifications, these two national defence assets still share a common mission, which is to be the backbone of ensuring the security and sovereignty of the country's waters from external threats, as well as monitoring the country's waters. KD Lekiu, with its high combat capabilities, functions as the country's primary defence fortress in the open sea while KM Tun Fatimah strengthens the enforcement of maritime laws and surveillance in coastal areas and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) which extends up to 200 nautical miles from the coast according to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Describing KD Lekiu as the country's number one warship, its Commanding Officer Captain Mahamad Nazer Darus described the country's warship's ability to conduct four-dimensional warfare. "First, subsurface (underwater) warfare where we counter, repel and also search and destroy submarines. Second, surface warfare where we can engage in combat with other surface vessels. "Thirdly, we are capable of repelling attacks from the air with anti-air missiles to destroy enemy aircraft and fourth, electronic warfare where we have electronic support measures and also electronic warfare to repel cyber attacks,' he said. He said this during a media tour of KD Lekiu in conjunction with the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (LIMA'25) at Resort World Langkawi here, which was also opened for the public starting today. Even more amazingly, the 26-year-old KD Lekiu once sailed on a 100-day voyage from Lumut to Hawaii, then back to Lumut covering a distance of 12,730 nautical miles and carrying out various exercises including firing missiles at real ship targets.

RMN maritime operations go high tech with USV acquisition
LANGKAWI: The Royal Malaysian Navy today received an unmanned surface vehicle (USV) from US-based defence firm Swiftships. The acquisition of the Swift Sea Stalker (S3) USV will bolster the navy's surveillance and intelligence-gathering capabilities. "The vessel can also be equipped with armaments to serve as a deterrence. "The introduction of the S3 opens up new opportunities for the RMN to explore additional unmanned platforms, aligning with the armed forces' vision, particularly under its Future Force development plan," the RMN said. Present at the handover on the sidelines of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima '25) were Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, his deputy Adly Zahari and ministry secretary-general Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali. The RMN was represented by its chief, Admiral Datuk Dr Zulhelmy Ithnain, while Swiftships was represented by its executive vice-president Kristina Paskeviciute. A USV is a remotely operated or autonomous vessel that operates on the surface of the water without any crew aboard. These vessels are designed to perform a variety of missions, often in environments that are too dangerous, repetitive, or remote for manned operations. USVs can be controlled from a distance or operate independently using pre-programmed instructions and on board sensors. In military contexts, USVs are used for tasks such as maritime surveillance, reconnaissance, mine countermeasures, and even armed patrols. They can be equipped with advanced sensors, communications systems and weaponry, depending on mission requirements. For the RMN, USVs like the S3 serve as force multipliers, enhancing operational capabilities while minimising risk to personnel. The RMN had previously operationalised unmanned systems through Squadron 601, which operates the ScanEagle unmanned aerial system (UAS) as a force multiplier in maritime operations.

GENERAL LANGKAWI, May 20 (Bernama) -- Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today officiated the Gracing Ceremony for the Maritime Segment of the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2025 (LIMA'25), held at Resorts World Langkawi (RWL) here. The event began with an opening gimmick, showcasing a dramatic infiltration by tactical divers from the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) and Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), who parachuted from an aircraft and landed in front of the main stage. The divers presented a black box containing a slot card, which was then activated by the Prime Minister to symbolically officiate the segment. This was followed by a demonstration of tactical manoeuvres involving boats and jet skis from various maritime enforcement agencies. Among the participating agencies were the RMN, PDRM, Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM), Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) and the Fisheries Department. Another highlight of the event was a coordinated inter-agency maritime capability demonstration, with the concept of an Inter-Agency Coordinated Rescue Mission, featuring a hostage rescue operation that showcased the combined expertise and synergy of the nation's security forces. The Navy's Special Warfare Forces (PASKAL), PDRM's Marine Combat Unit (UNGERIN) Customs Operational Battle Force Response Assault (COBRA), MMEA's Special Tactical and Rescue Team (STAR) and the Marine Department with both surface and aerial assets were among the elite units involved in the demonstration. The final segment featured a Fly-Past and Sail-Past, where aircraft and vessels involved in the demonstration performed a ceremonial pass in front of the main stage as a salute to the dignitaries in attendance. Anwar then participated in the Fleet Review of LIMA'25, a naval tradition practised around the world involving the inspection of ships at sea. Earlier, the Prime Minister was received by Navy Chief Admiral Datuk Dr Zulhelmy Ithnain and Deputy Navy Chief Vice-Admiral Datuk Shamsuddin Ludin, who also chairs the LIMA'25 Maritime Segment Working Committee.
