Dhofar youth contest offers RO11,000 in cash prizes
Muscat – Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth has launched the second edition of the Qeemah competition under the theme 'Innovation in Local Industries' in cooperation with Dhofar Governor's Office. The competition aims to encourage young people in Dhofar to develop creative, non-traditional solutions to modern challenges in alignment with Oman's economic diversification goals under Vision 2040. Mohammed Abdullah Batmira, Director of Qeemah, said this year's competition is divided into two main categories – one for entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and the second for high school students. 'The competition includes several stages, such as training workshops and an 'ideas race', culminating in an awards ceremony on May 22 with cash prizes of up to RO11,000 for the top three entries. Winning projects will be mentored till August 2025.' According to Batmira, the competition aims to generate local added value by tapping into Dhofar's natural resources, traditional crafts and economic potential. 'The goal is to help participants turn their ideas into viable projects – whether technical, entrepreneurial or industrial – and reach regional and international markets.' Mohammed Abdullah Batmira, Director of Qeemah The competition's objectives include supporting economic diversification, creating employment opportunities, guiding youth to invest in local resources, and raising Dhofar's innovation index. It also aims to foster the development of competitive national products and promote awareness of the economic benefits of locally added value. In addition to its direct goals, the competition seeks to enhance the SME ecosystem, build youth capacity in volunteerism and event management, and establish Dhofar as a hub for local innovation. It also aims to highlight economic opportunities across the governorate's wilayats, encourage a culture of healthy competition among youth, and provide platforms for creative expression and investment. Batmira informed that teams of up to five members can participate, and entries must be original, practical and clearly presented in a concise concept note. Ideas must not have been previously registered as intellectual property. The Qeemah competition is part of Oman's broader push to support innovation and entrepreneurship, particularly among its younger population, as the sultanate diversifies its economy beyond oil.

Oman seeks bids for Jabal Shams Grand Canyon project
Omani authorities have invited bids for the first phase of Jabal Shams Grand Canyon, a major tourism project that boasts key attractions including a recreational area, a glass walkway, a tourist resort, a zip line and a hiking trail. The bids were floated by Governorate of Dakhliyah for the ambitious RO11 million ($28.5 million) tourism development to be set up in the Wilayat of Al Hamrat. Once completed, it will be instrumental in boosting the national economy and generating jobs for Omani youth, reported Oman News Agency. Situated at an altitude of 3,000m and covering an area of 145,000 sqm, the key development aims to attract adventure seekers and families. Geological exhibitions, a rock garden, and an adventure centre are also part of the development. Launching the bid, Sheikh Hilal Said Al Hajri, Governor of A'Dakhiliyah, said: "The first phase includes site levelling, land preparation, road planning, and the development of service networks. It will also involve the construction of reception and administration buildings, basic facilities, and public amenities." "The project aims to support domestic tourism, create job opportunities for jobseekers, and contribute to national income," he stated. Situated at an altitude of 3,000m and covering an area of 145,000 sqm, the key development aims to attract adventure seekers and families. In October last year, the Dakhliyah Governor's Office signed an agreement with Nas Engineering Consultancy to design and oversee the first phase, reported Muscat Daily. The project design was selected as the winner of the 2024 Governorate's Competition and aligns with the Royal Directives for local development and 'Oman Vision 2040,' it stated. Designed with sustainability in mind, the project aims to integrate with the natural landscape while enhancing visitors' connection with the environment. Additional features include a coffee farm, fruit orchards, a summer camp, and a seasonal activities garden. A 500-seat theatre, kiosks selling seasonal produce, and an information centre will provide cultural experiences for visitors. The second phase of the project will be tendered later this year, said Al Hajri.
