Disabled tribal girl's body found on Bengaluru's outskirts; rape and murder suspected

A disabled minor girl from the nomadic Hakki Pikki tribal community was found dead with severe injuries on her body near a railway track at Bidadi, in Ramanagara district, on the outskirts of Bengaluru on Monday. Superintendent of Police R Srinivas Gowda said that initial findings did not indicate sexual assault. 'We have formed three teams led by DySP Srinivas and Bidadi police Inspector Shankar Nayak. We are waiting for the postmortem report to confirm whether the victim was raped,' he said. The girl, who was speech and hearing impaired, was raised by her single mother along with three siblings, all disabled, according to sources. The Bidadi police said that on the day of the incident, the girl had attended a birthday celebration at a neighbour's house but did not return home. Her family filed a missing-person report after failing to locate her. The girl's body, bearing multiple injuries, was discovered by villagers, prompting the police to register a murder case. The body was then sent for a postmortem to ascertain the cause of her death. A police officer said that four suspects had been detained in the case. Outraged villagers protested alleging the girl had been raped and murdered. They demanded justice and criticised the lack of basic infrastructure in the area, including poor lighting. They also called for better police patrolling in the area, alleging miscreants and drug users visit it frequently. Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and Magadi MLA H C Balakrishna visited the girl's family. Shivakumar termed the incident 'unfortunate' and said that an impartial investigation would uncover the truth, adding that the family had not named any suspects. The girl's family got Rs 4.12 lakh in compensation from district officials and an additional Rs 50,000 from the local panchayat.

BENGALURU: A 14-year-old deaf-mute girl was found murdered next to the Bengaluru-Mysuru railway track at Bhadrapura in Bidadi on Monday morning. The body was in a semi-nude state and the victim's head was smashed with a blunt weapon, said the police. 'The postmortem was conducted at Rajarajeswari Hospital. The killer is yet to be arrested. The victim was a ninth standard student at a residential school at Tavarekere in Magadi and had come home due to summer holidays. The girl, who stays at Hakki Pikki Colony in Manchanayakanahalli in Bidadi, had gone missing around 5 pm on Sunday. The next morning around 7 am passersby saw the body and alerted the police. The victim's mother, who was informed by the villagers, rushed near the railway track and identified that it was her daughter. She then filed a complaint with the police on Monday morning. The police suspect that the victim must have been murdered late Sunday night elsewhere and the body was thrown next to the railway track to mislead investigations. 'Even the victim's elder sister and elder brother are also verbally challenged and cannot hear. Her father has died,' a police officer said. DCM visits victim's family, gives Rs 4.25 lakh compensation 'She has a stepfather and mother. A few suspects have been taken into custody and are being questioned,' said a police officer.
