Nvidia's RTX 5080 Super could be coming much sooner than expected

All eyes are on Nvidia and AMD as they get ready to launch some of the best graphics cards for the mainstream market, meaning the RTX 5060 and the RX 9060 XT. However, a new leak tells us that Nvidia is working on a GPU that's set to come out later this year, and it's one that might finally live up to the expectations. I'm talking about the RTX 5080 Super (or Ti). The tantalizing leak comes from Baidu and was first shared by Wccftech. According to the leaker, who is a moderator on the Baidu forums, Nvidia will launch the RTX 5080S or the RTX 5080 Ti at the end of the year. Spec-wise, we don't know much, but the leaker says it's 'basically certain' that the new graphics card will sport 24GB of VRAM, which marks an 8GB upgrade over the RTX 5080. That kind of memory capacity would also put the GPU on par with the RTX 4090. Recommended Videos Upon launch of the RTX 5080, many were hoping that it'd replace the last-gen RTX 4090. Unfortunately, the card never made it to that level, and even overclocking can't bring it on par with the Ada flagship. However, depending on the specs of the rumored RTX 5080 Super, we might see the two cards battle it out on more even ground. Memory alone won't be enough to boost the bandwidth significantly; the GPU would also need a wider memory bus to match, and ideally, more CUDA cores. In the RTX 40-series, the RTX 4080 and the RTX 4080 Super were practically the same GPU in terms of specs, with a minor uplift in CUDA cores for the Super card and no changes to the memory interface. As a result, the GPU was around 1-3% faster than its predecessor. The exciting thing here is that the RTX 5080 Super/Ti might arrive sooner than expected. If Nvidia does launch it at the end of 2025, it'll change things up compared to its previous release cycle, where the Super refresh came at the beginning of the year, meaning a bit over a year after the initial launch of the RTX 4080. Even if the above turns out to be true, I wouldn't expect any announcements from Nvidia until the final quarter of the year, so we'll just have to be patient.

Nvidia rumored to deliver RTX 5080 Super and 5070 Super GPUs in 2025 — but it's all about pricing

(Image credit: Future) Nvidia may not be finished with delivering RTX 50-series GPUs after all, aside from the upcoming RTX 5060, as a new rumor suggests Team Green may have Super models coming down the pipeline. We may see RTX 5080 Super and RTX 5070 Super GPUs coming as soon as this year, with 24GB and 18GB of GDDR7 VRAM, respectively. Plus, these new variants could deliver somewhere between 7% to 15% performance boosts compared to their RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 counterparts. This comes from known leaker Moore's Law is Dead (via Techradar), with a source from a GPU partner claiming the cards have been in testing since last year. Nvidia has put the Super models "on hold," but the source now states that its "likely" we'll see upgraded RTX 5080 and 5070 graphics cards in 2025. You may like Compared to their base models, with the RTX 5080 coming with 16GB VRAM and RTX 5070 with 12GB VRAM, the Super variants would offer major boosts in video memory, leading to handling more demanding PC games far better. If accurate, the RTX 5080 Super would have the same 24GB of VRAM as an RTX 5090 laptop GPU (the desktop GPU comes with 32GB). Of course, as the leaker claims, none of these plans are set in stone, as these are only rumors for now. That said, an RTX 5080 Super with 24GB of video memory has been tipped since last year. It wouldn't be a complete surprise if Nvidia does bring out RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 Super variants, as we've seen in the previous RTX 40-series era of GPUs. Offering higher video memory and CUDA cores, these GPUs are great options for those wanting better performance potential but not wanting to pay a higher price for next GPU-level up. Pricing is a key factor (Image credit: Tom's Guide) One key factor that may throw off RTX 5080 and 5070 Supers arriving at all: price. As per the rumor, Nvidia stated the cards will be on hold until they sort out the pricing for the increased VRAM. With 24GB and 16GB of VRAM, these GPUs are sure to come with an increased price — possibly up to 20%, according to the leaker. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. In case you missed it, if you're trying to find an RTX 5090, RTX 5080, RTX 5070 Ti or RTX 5070 right now at Nvidia's official asking price, it's not an easy task. If the Super models also fall prey to sky-high costs, then Nvidia may have a hard time getting these off shelves. An increase in VRAM is always wanted, as the RTX 5060 Ti with 16GB of video memory has shown us (not many are going for the 8GB model, understandably). However, the price has to be worth added bonus, and considering how high third-party RTX 50-series GPUs are, Nvidia may shy away from bringing these out. Oh, and tariffs don't make the situation any better. There is some good news, as the source believe Nvidia is looking at keeping the MSRP of the Super models the same as the RTX 5080 ($999) and RTX 5070 ($549) prices. So, more power for the same price. While unlikely, it would be great to see. There's no official word on any RTX 5080 Super and RTX 5070 Super GPUs yet, to take this in with a pinch of salt. Still, seeing upgraded RTX 50-series GPUs down the line means more PC gamers will have a chance of nabbing one of Nvidia's latest graphics cards with even better performance. Speaking of, find out how Nvidia's DLSS is a game-changer for PC gaming. More from Tom's Guide

Nvidia RTX 5080 Super Rumors Are Already Swirling

Mere months on from the launch of Nvidia's RTX 5080, we're already hearing rumors of a Super variant under development. Although as far from confirmed as you can get in modern computing, the RTX 5080 Super is alleged to sport a new version of GDDR7 memory using 3 GB chips, allowing it to have 24 GB of memory in total—50% more than the standard 5080. In a surprising move, Nvidia is also said to be working on an RTX 5070 Super, which would sport 18 GB of VRAM—a first for modern GPUs. Nvidia's RTX 50 series had a rocky start and AMD has massively capitalized. One of the failings of this Nvidia generation, among several, is that the performance just isn't that impressive. That might be part of the reason we're already hearing about these cards, though their eventual release date, and indeed even their existence, remains pure rumor for now. A 5080 with more memory might come with increased power demands. Credit: PCMag Still, if we want to indulge in a little component-based fantasy, the RTX 5080 Super would use the same GB203 GPU in the RTX 5090 laptop version. It features a 256-bit memory bus and 24GB of GDDR7 memory. The RTX 5070 Super would reportedly be based on the same GB205 GPU as the standard 5070 and would have the same 192-bit memory bus, but thanks to those higher-capacity memory modules, its overall memory would expand from 12GB to 18GB. Videocardz claims that Nvidia originally planned to launch an RTX 5080 with 24GB of memory, but due to availability issues with the 3 GB chips, it was forced to opt for the smaller 16GB capacity. Although Nvidia hasn't confirmed as such, the original 5080's relatively pedestrian memory configuration for a high-end card in 2025 did seem underwhelming at launch. The RTX 5080 Super might be able to fix that. If other cards in the RTX 50 range could get the Super treatment with added memory, the RTX 5060 Ti and RTX 5060 would be prime candidates. The base models of these cards sport just 8GB of VRAM, and though that doesn't always lead to significant deltas in performance between them and the 16GB versions, there are certain games where it can make a big difference. Switching the base models to 12GB instead would help alleviate that issue and put those kinds of low-end cards to bed, preventing gamers from being locked out of future games because of a lack of video memory.
