70-year-old woman in Coimbatore clears Class 12 Board exams in first attempt

N.T. Raani, a 70-year-old resident of Coimbatore, has cleared the Tamil Nadu Class 12 board examination as a private candidate in her first attempt, completing a long-deferred academic goal more than five decades after finishing her SSLC. Ms. Raani grew up in Bodinayakanur, a small town in Theni district. She completed her SSLC in 1972–73, during the period when the Pre-University Course (PUC) system was in place. 'There were no colleges in my village at the time. My parents did not allow me to travel to Madurai, the nearest city, for higher studies,' she said. Following her marriage, her family moved to Coimbatore. She focused on domestic responsibilities and raising her children. Although she briefly attended typewriting classes, she did not have the opportunity to continue formal education. In 2020, following the death of her husband, Ms. Raani found herself living alone. Her son and daughter are settled in other cities, and she has three grandchildren. With more time at her disposal and a sustained interest in learning, she enrolled as a private candidate for the Higher Secondary Examination. On Thursday, she received her Class XII results: a total score of 346 out of 600. Her subject-wise marks were: Tamil – 89, History – 52, English – 50, Economics – 48, Commerce – 67, and Accountancy – 40. 'I did not go to any classes or tuition. I studied on my own. My determination and concentration helped me,' she said. Ms. Raani now plans to pursue a degree related to yoga. 'It is an area that interests me. I also enjoy travelling and often plan trips independently,' she said.

Coimbatore woman clears Class 12 at 68, proves it's never too late to learn

COIMBATORE: A 68-year-old woman from Coimbatore has cleared the Class 12 board examination as a private candidate, over five decades after she dropped out of school. Raani N T, a resident of Kalikkanaickenpalayam on the outskirts of the city, scored 346 out of 600 marks, including 89 in Tamil, 50 in English and 48 in Economics. She studied independently at home without any formal coaching. A native of Bodinayakkanur in Theni district, Raani completed Class 10 in 1972. 'There were no opportunities for higher studies in my village back then. After marriage, I moved to Chennai and later to Coimbatore, but family responsibilities kept me from continuing my education,' she told TNIE. The turning point came after the death of her husband in 2020. 'With my children settled and no major family commitments, I wanted to do something for myself. I bought textbooks and studied every day for Class 11 exam,' she said. After clearing Class 11 in her first attempt, she registered as a private candidate this year for the Class 12 boards. 'I wanted to take the Science stream, but when it wasn't available, I opted for Arts,' she said. Raani, who practises yoga and kalari, now hopes to pursue a degree in physical education. 'I don't know if I'll get admission at this age, but I want to try.' She fondly recalls the younger students looking at her with surprise at the exam centre. 'I told them there is no age limit to learning.'

Nayab' secures spot in Florida's South Asian Int Film Fest

Umair Nasir Ali's Nayab has been listed amongst the selection for the South Asian International Film Festival of Florida, as per the list of entries shared on the festival's official website. The Pakistani film is part of a collection of twenty-six films, including Shivani Mehra's Me, Raani, Debra Gussin's This Is Our Time, and Ram Kamal Mukherjee's Binodiini. Released in January last year, Nayab stars Yumna Zaidi, Javed Sheikh, and Usama Khan. The sports drama follows the coming-of-age story of Yumna's eponymous character. "In the bustling heart of Karachi, a determined girl harbours a dream to shatter stereotypes and play cricket for Pakistan, while her brother, once a rising star himself, grapples with his past. As they navigate the gritty world of the local cricket scene, their unwavering bond and the city's chaotic past become their greatest allies in this deeply Pakistani tale of ambition, resilience, and family," reads the synopsis. At the one-year anniversary of the release of the film, Umair took to Instagram to reflect on the achievement. "One year ago, Nayab marked a monumental chapter in my journey as a filmmaker. My first feature film, a story that felt right, that resonated deeply," began the director. He added that the project allowed him to hone his craft as a narrative director, helped him focus on helming the storyline, enabled him to work passionately with actors, and all-in-all provided him an emotional experience. "I carried detailed notes for every actor, amplifying their strengths and guiding them to refine areas that needed nuance. Each day on set began with music played not just to set the tone but to block out everything else and focus entirely on execution," he recalled. "I was fortunate to have incredible collaborators, too many to name, but each person took this project as their own, pouring their heart and soul into it," he wrote. "Nayab wasn't just a project; it became a part of me. Over the past year, this film has travelled to places I could only dream of, shining brightly across festivals worldwide." Umair concluded his note with a 'thank you' to Vertical Cinema for putting together a video to celebrate Nayab's one-year anniversary. "It's moments like this that remind me why we do what we do," he wrote.
