Araria court awards life term to two for murder
Araria: District additional judge (IV), Araria, Rabi Kumar, awarded life imprisonment to Sonu alias Mir Mashkoor (22) and Jahan Ara alias Janira (28) after both were found guilty of the murder of one 21-year-old Mohd Sohail of Araria town. The judge also slapped a fine of Rs 5,000 on each, police said. According to the police, the convicts had taken Mohd Sohail to the riverside of Araria town in good faith on Feb 26, 2023 and killed him there using a sharp weapon, and causing multiple injuries to his body. "His decomposed and mutilated body was found after two days of the incident. The police lodged an FIR based on the statement of his elder brother, Mohd Tauhid," said additional public prosecutor, Prabhat Kumari. The case was put on a speedy trial, and the court, after assessing the evidence available in the case record and giving hearing to both sides, the court found both men guilty of the brutal murder. It also found both guilty of concealing and hiding evidence of the murder, she added.

Two get 14-year RI in ganja smuggling case
Araria: District additional judge (fourth) Rabi Kumar has sentenced two men to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 2 lakh each in a cross-border drug smuggling case. In the event of non-payment of the fine, both convicts will serve an additional two years of rigorous imprisonment, according to special public prosecutor and senior lawyer Ashok Mishra. The convicts have been identified as Depal Oraon (23), a citizen of Nepal, and Suman Kumar Paswan (25), a resident of Tira village under Sikti police station in the district. On the night of March 12, 2023, the duo allegedly entered Indian territory via the Bakra river, which flows from Nepal to India, carrying 60kg of ganja. They were intercepted and arrested by SSB inspector Vijay Kumar and other jawans, who seized two bags of ganja from their possession. Based on the SSB's information, an FIR was registered at Kursakanta police station, invoking relevant sections of the NDPS Act. Following investigation, Kursakanta police filed a charge sheet against both accused. A portion of the seized substance was sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) in Patna, which confirmed that it was ganja. "The court found both accused guilty of smuggling ganja under the NDPS Act and awarded them 14 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine," said special PP Ashok Mishra.

Araria man gets life term in murder case
Araria : Fourth additional district judge Rabi Kumar on Wednesday sentenced one Baiju Murmu to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of killing a woman, Sakunia Devi , on Oct 21, 2022, in Lahtora village under the Araria police station. Murmu had used an unlicensed firearm to commit the crime. The case was based on an FIR lodged by the victim's son, Arbind Kumar. Following the complaint, police conducted an investigation, found the allegations to be true and submitted a chargesheet against Murmu in the trial court. After evaluating the evidence presented by both the prosecution and the defence and hearing both sides at length, judge Rabi Kumar found Murmu guilty of murdering Sakunia Devi using a firearm and sentenced him to life imprisonment along with a monetary penalty. Additional public prosecutor Prabha Kumari said, "The convict shot Sakunia from behind with a country-made pistol. She died on the spot." In addition to the life sentence, the court also imposed a further three years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 15,000 under the Arms Act. Both sentences will run concurrently, the court ordered.
