Small changes make a big impact at Minneapolis' Tare Market
Every day is Earth Day for a Minneapolis-based market. Its sustainability efforts keep thousands of pounds of waste from landfills each year. No package, no problem. Actually, at Tare Market in northeast Minneapolis, it's preferred. "The average American throws away 4.9 pounds of trash every single day," manager Rachel Clark said. Dreadful data Clark and her team at Tare Market — Minnesota's first zero waste and refill shop — are trying to change. "Unfortunately, every single plastic toothbrush we've used in our life is still sitting in the landfill somewhere," she said. "It's kind of endless, and we want to touch on all parts of the home." From food refills to bulk cleaning and personal care, the market offers no plastic products, aiming to scale back environmental impact. "It can be intimidating and overwhelming when people hear zero waste," Clark said. That's why Clark suggests people looking to make changes first start with a trash audit — analyze personal waste before making any adjustments. But let's say the first change is switching to a reusable cotton swab. "When you purchase one of those, that removes 1,000 cotton swabs from the landfill," Clark said. It adds up. Last year, Tare Market helped divert 1,300 plastic toothbrushes, 4,000 shampoo and conditioner bottles and 1,300 pounds of waste from landfills — one refill at a time. "It's a small change, but it does have a huge impact, too," Clark said. Tare Market is hosting a clothing swap on April 19 from noon to 4 p.m. at its northeast location.

Lawmakers advocating for bills to help veterans and veteran families this legislative session
HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — A bipartisan group of lawmakers are advocating for a slate of proposals to help Connecticut veterans, including a property tax exemption for the families of fallen service members. At the state capitol on Thursday, Rachel Clark, a Bolton resident and Gold Star spouse, urged lawmakers to expand a property tax exemption currently available to totally disabled veterans to include Gold Star families. Clark's husband, Army Master Sgt. Michael Clark, was killed by lightning during a training exercise in 2022. City of Middletown, Veterans Affairs at odds over land next to State Veterans Cemetery The push has garnered support from a bipartisan group of state legislators, including Rep. Steve Weir, a Republican from Bolton. 'It's absolutely important that we keep them in our thoughts when we're seemingly working on other things in this building — you know, without losing sight of the people who protect us and keep us safe,' Weir said. Rep. Jaime Foster, a Democrat and chair of the Veterans Committee, also voiced strong support for the measure. 'We're talking about families who are suffering in perpetuity from either the loss of a spouse or from service-connected injuries and there is no reason why we shouldn't do everything in our power to make their lives easier,' Foster said. Along with the push for financial relief for Gold Star families, lawmakers are also working to secure more land for Connecticut's State Veterans Cemetery. Foster stressed the urgency of the measure. 'We're only a couple of years away from running out of space at the veterans cemetery, and so what we're trying to do is ensure that we will never run out of a place where we have continuity and a guaranteed place of rest for our servicemembers who served us heroically,' she said. The effort to expand the cemetery is led by Connecticut Veterans Affairs Commissioner Ron Welch, a retired brigadier general who served in the Army's elite 75th Ranger Regiment and the Connecticut National Guard. 'It means a lot,' Welch said. 'You're back with your brothers and sisters in many cases that you served with. My own feeling is this is the least we can do,' The state is seeking at 50 buildable acres for the veterans' cemetery. They have put out a request to any land owners who believe they may have a suitable site to sell to the state for the cemetery. You can find more information here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
