Local organizations discuss domestic violence prevention

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Members of Governor Hochul's cabinet were in town this week to talk about proposals in the budget to support victims of crime and gender-based violence. Local organizations sat in on the presentation by the state's Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, and the Office of Victim Services. The presentation focused on budget proposals such as doubling the funding for rape crisis centers, creating a mass violence crisis response team for survivors, requiring hospitals to provide victims of sexual assault free forensic exams, and free school meals. The executive director of the Office for Prevention of Domestic Violence, Kelli Owens, says they're traveling across the state to hear from stakeholders, and a majority support all of the proposals. 'Everybody is talking about how we can-do long-term services for victims and survivors. So much of what we focus on is that emergency response, and everybody is really asking what can we do long term? And I think there's a lot of stuff in here that really gets to that, for victims and survivors of gender-based violence,' said Owens. The meeting took place at SUNY Broome's Culinary and Event Center in Downtown Binghamton. Local Eagle Scout honoring domestic violence victims with project

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – An Eagle Scout stopped by the culinary center last week to update the Binghamton Rotary on his memorial wall project to honor his late mother. Schyler Savage is in Troop 199, and for part of his Eagle Scout project, decided to create the Broome County Crime Victims Memorial Wall at Round Top Park in Endicott. Savage's mother was in an abusive relationship and was found dead in a Windsor home in 2023. Schyler and the Crime Victims Assistance Center have been fundraising for the project and have already raised around $20,000 of the $25,000 goal. The memorial wall will include the names of crime victims, and families can contact the crime victim's assistance center to add a name. 'The $25,000 includes not only just the building of the memorial, but it will also include all of the costs for the names to be added to it. And if I exceed that total, it will just cover more names for years to come,' said Savage. The goal is to hold an unveiling ceremony in April. The finished project will feature a patio, a flower bed, a commemorative statue, and more. The Cher Show coming to the Forum

(WIVT/WBGH) – The Broome County Forum Theatre is turning back time to honor a performer known for her bold personality, bedazzled costumes, and beloved hit music. The Cher Show is coming to Binghamton on Monday and Tuesday. The jukebox musical tells the rags to riches story of the legendary superstar Cher. From her humble beginnings as a little girl, to meeting Sonny and falling in love, to her iconic appearances on screen, audience members will get to take a look at Cher behind the sequins and long black hair. Cher is portrayed by three women who represent the different eras of her life. SUNY Cortland graduate Ella Perez plays Babe, the 1960s Cher. Perez says whether you're a Cher fan or not, the musical is very inspiring. She says it gives you a whole new perspective on Cher, especially in her early life. 'When you think of Cher you think of the bad ass, foul mouthed, diva icon Cher and not really necessarily a really shy, introverted version of Cher who couldn't even go on stage without Sonny right next to her. So, I think it's really cool and fun to bring that Cher to light because not many people know about her but she's really crucial and she's always in there,' said Perez. Perez says audience members will be up dancing in the aisles because the show features 35 of Cher's top hits. Show times for The Cher Show are at 7:30 both nights. Tickets start at $55. To purchase, visit or the Mirabito Box Office located at the Visions Veterans Memorial Arena. Racial Justice and Equity Fund applications now open

(WIVT/WBGH) – A program that started in 2020 in response to the death of George Floyd is taking grant applications for programs that focus on marginalized communities. The Community Foundation of South Central New York, is encouraging organizations to apply to receive a grant through its Racial Justice and Equity Fund. The fund was created in 2020, and since then, has approved around 14 grants for $135,000. The applications are reviewed in the summertime. The minimum award is $500 and the max is $10,000. The executive director, Tina Barber, says especially with the federal government disbanding DEI, supporting at the local level is more important than ever. 'Some of the projects that we've funded over the years have included access to capital for folks that want to start businesses, economic and business development. Any project or program that either expands capacity or offers an original opportunity. To help these folks be able to realize their dreams,' said Barber. Some of the organizations that have received funding in the past is the North of Main Community Center, the NAACP, and CARES. You can visit to apply for a grant, or to donate to the program.
