HBO's Harry Potter child leads finally announced after months of 'woke' casting backlash

The three child actors who will play the lead roles in HBO's forthcoming Harry Potter adaption have been announced after months of speculation. Dominic McLaughlin has been cast for the titular role of Harry Potter, with Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermoine Granger. Executives cast the new trio after more than 30,000 actors auditioned for the lead roles in an open casting call for British children aged nine to 11. On Tuesday, showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer Mark Mylod expressed their delight after the "extraordinary search." 'After an extraordinary search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann, we are delighted to announce we have found our Harry, Hermione and Ron," they said in a statement. "The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen." "We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. "It's been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there." Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint achieved worldwide fame in the early 2000s as the original leads in the seven fantasy films. The three newcomers are largely unknown, and the HBO series could excel with them. Like Radcliffe, who began his career starring in school plays, McLaughlin played Oliver Gregory in the on-stage comedy Grow alongside Nick Frost and Golda Rosheuvel. Stanton played the titular role in Roald Dahl's Matilda: The Musical in London's West End from 2023 through 2024. Weasley will be Stout's first major role. Earlier this month, Hollywood finance expert Martin Cobb told The Sun there was "absolutely no reason" the newcomers "won't easily exceed the incomes of the three original stars." Radcliffe has an estimated net worth of £82.5 million, Watson's figure is £64 million, while Grint earned £37.5 million. A production insider told the publication the success of the new series relies heavily on the bond between McLaughlin, Stout and Stanton. "The hope is that this becomes the most lucrative TV series of all time," they said. "But that hinges on how two young boys and a girl manage to bond — as well as coping with instant fame." The trio will start filming in the next months at HBO's 200-acre studio in Leavesden, Herts, alongside A-listers John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. The announcement comes as the casting of some of the major roles in the adaptation of British author J.K. Rowling's best-selling novels into a long-form TV show has been met with backlash for being perceived as "woke." The choice to cast award-winning British actor Paapa Essiedu as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry professor Severus Snape attracted criticism before he was even confirmed for the role. "Paapa Essiedu is being eyed for the role of Professor Severus Snape in the upcoming 'Harry Potter' TV series. Another classic that goes woke," one person wrote on X. "Paapa Essiedu can't hold a candle to Alan Rickman. The woke left just had to ruin Harry Potter! Needless to say," another person said. Lithgow also received backlash due to Rowling's stance on transgender rights. The 59-year-old author, who disputes claims her views are "transphobic", recently celebrated the UK Supreme Court's ruling that only biological women meet the definition of a woman under equality laws in April. In a subsequent article titled 'An open letter to John Lithgow: Please walk away from Harry Potter', Book Riot contributor Danika Ellis claimed Lithgow's casting "lends credence" to the new Harry Potter. Ellis said Lithgow effectively helped "grow J.K. Rowling's platform to further her crusade against trans people's rights" by starring as Dumbledore. Lithgow responded by saying the letter did not deter him, and he 'absolutely' did not expect the amount of backlash he has received. "I thought, 'Why is this a factor at all?' I wonder how J.K. Rowling has absorbed it," he said. "I suppose at a certain point I'll meet her, and I'm curious to talk to her." Rowling was once close to Radcliffe, Watson and Grint but previously said she would not forgive the trio for criticising her opinions and told them to "save their apologies" for 'traumatised de transitioners'. She appeared to have reignited her feud with the three stars via a savage online dig at the trio in March. Her supporters include HBO, which Warner Bros., the distributor of the Harry Potter franchise, owns. Last November, HBO chief Casey Bloys said Rowling's views have not "affected the casting or hiring of writers or productions staff' of the Harry Potter adaption, which is set to begin filming later this year. 'J.K. Rowling has a right to express her personal views. We will remain focused on the development of the new series, which will only benefit from her involvement," a spokesperson for the network told Variety.

HBO Max announces main cast for Harry Potter reboot TV series

HBO Max has announced the actors who will play the beloved "Harry Potter" trio in their new reboot television series. The streaming service announced on Tuesday that Dominic McLaughlin will play the titular character, Arabella Stanton will play Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout will play Ron Weasley. All the actors are newcomers. "The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen," executive producers Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod said in a statement about the actors. The new TV show "will be a faithful adaptation of the beloved 'Harry Potter' books," and will be streamed exclusively on HBO Max. It's not clear when the series will be released. The book's author, J.K. Rowling, will also serve as an executive producer on the show. The selection of the show's core cast comes amid the author'scriticism of the movies' star trio, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, following years of controversial comments she's made about transgender people. The British author has been at the core of controversy following incidents stemming back to 2017, which include her liking X posts promoting articles criticized as transphobic and publishing a 2020 essay that some called a "transphobic manifesto." Several actors from Rowling's wizarding world have since criticized the author's comments, including Radcliffe, who said, "Transgender women are women," the Guardian reported. The author appeared to slam Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint in a social media post that asked about actors who instantly ruin a movie for her. "Three guesses. Sorry, but that was irresistible,' Rowling wrote on X in March along with three laughing emojis. Earlier this year, Rowling shared a social media thread that misgendered several transgender women and appeared to imply trans women have a penchant for sexual predation in response to a Scottish hate-crime law that criminalizes hatred against people based on race, religion, disability, sexuality or gender identity. The situation ignited calls from critics for police to investigate Rowling. Last month, the author was once again at the root of controversy when she posted a photo of herself on X with a drink and a cigar in hand after a U.K. court decision that did not recognize transgender women as women.

Did you know Reserve Bank of India once printed currency for Pakistan? State Bank of Pakistan acknowledged by..., UAE, Oman also...

Reserve Bank of India New Delhi: The Radcliffe Line refers to the boundary drawn by British lawyer Sir Cyril Radcliffe during the 1947 partition of British India. This line divided the provinces of Punjab and Bengal into two separate territories: India and Pakistan. The partition was a result of the Indian Independence Act of 1947, which aimed to create two independent nations, India and Pakistan, based on religious lines. But did this Radcliffe Line actually provide the resources both countries truly needed? In fact, the British man who drew this line, Radcliffe, had never even visited India. After the partition, Pakistan especially lacked essential resources. In such a situation, it was India that extended full support. Since 1947, India has provided a slew of assistance to bankrupt Pakistan. The Reserve Bank of India even printed currency notes for its neighboring country between August 1947 and September 1948. At the time of Partition, Pakistan had no infrastructure. According to a media report quoting current affairs commentator Aamir Khokhar wrote that Pakistan was unable to establish a central bank. It was then decided that the Reserve Bank would function as the state bank for both India and Pakistan. Since the Reserve Bank already existed in India, it helped Pakistan without any hesitation. State Bank of Pakistan Acknowledged the Role It is important to note that the official website of the State Bank of Pakistan has acknowledged the services of the Reserve Bank of India. In 1947, during the India-Pakistan partition, the Reserve Bank of India acted as the central bank for both countries. Soon after the partition, the Reserve Bank of India took the responsibility of currency circulation since establishing a central bank in Pakistan was not an easy task. According to media reports, the State Bank of Pakistan states that the Governor-General of undivided India issued the 'Pakistan (Monetary System and Reserve Bank) Order, 1947' on 14 August 1947. This order stated that until a central bank was established in Pakistan, the RBI would handle all currency-related matters. Until September 30, 1948, the Reserve Bank was made the common authority for both India and Pakistan. In this way, until 30 September 1948, the RBI fulfilled all of Pakistan's financial needs and managed its monetary system. RBI Printed Notes for These Countries Too The Reserve Bank of India not only printed notes for Pakistan but also for several Gulf countries like the UAE, Oman, and Bahrain. This practice continued until 1967, and until then, the Gulf countries used the Indian Rupee. It is also recorded in the history of the RBI that it printed currency notes for Pakistan for nearly a year. At that time, the Reserve Bank had an office in Lahore, which was later closed down.
