‘Bows survive another elimination game, advances in Big West Tournament

For the third time in six days, the University of Hawai'i baseball team faced elimination and once again, the Rainbow Warriors rose to the occasion. UH staved off elimination on Day 3 of the Big West Championship with a convincing 16-4 win over host Cal State Fullerton on Friday, fueled by a steady start from Sebastian Gonzalez and a breakout performance at the plate. After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Rainbow Warriors quickly responded with three runs on four hits in the top of the second and never looked back. Matt Miura and Hunter Faildo powered the offense, combining for 7 hits, Miura with four of his own with 3 RBI as Hawai'i pulled away. Gonzalez delivered a strong start, allowing just one run on four hits across four innings before handing the ball to the bullpen with a 5-1 lead. Reliever Isaiah Magdaleno closed the door with 3.2 innings of relief, three strikeouts, and two runs allowed. The Rainbow Warriors blew the game open in the seventh inning with back-to-back home runs by Jordan Donahue and Kamana Nahaku as part of a five-run frame. Hawai'i improved to 26-1 this season when leading after six innings. With the win, UH advances to face Cal Poly at noon HST on Saturday. The winner of that game will face UC Irvine at 4 p.m. HST later that day. If UC Irvine wins, the Anteaters will clinch the Big West title. A victory by either UH or Cal Poly would force a winner-take-all championship game on Sunday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. ‘Bows volleyball returns home from NCAA Tournament

The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team returned to O'ahu on Sunday following a straight-set loss to UCLA in the NCAA National Championship Tournament semifinal in Columbus, Ohio. Despite the season ending one win shy of a title match appearance, the Rainbow Warriors closed out another impressive campaign with a 27-6 overall record and their fourth Big West Conference Championship in program history. The 'Bows battled through late-season injuries but continued to show the depth and resilience that have become hallmarks of the Charlie Wade-led program. As the team now transitions into the offseason, it bids farewell to key contributors, including All-Big West honorees Kurt Nusterer and Eleu Choy. Nusterer, a junior middle blocker who will graduate and forgo his final year of eligibility to pursue a career in finance, reflected on the support and uniqueness of the Hawai'i volleyball community. 'I still will never be able to wrap my head around the fact that people love us that much, to make sacrifices like that to support us,' Nusterer said. 'It's the reason this program is successful and why it's going to continue to be successful. There's no place in the world that has that kind of support like we do, and that's why I'm here. That's why a lot of other people are here. It's the reason this place is so special.' Choy, a senior libero who played his final match for UH, expressed excitement for the program's future. 'I'm very excited about this program, especially with how much youth we have and how much more we can improve,' Choy said. 'We've already shown we can play at a high level, and I don't think we've hit our peak. I believe they'll be back in the national spotlight—and maybe even win it next year.' Looking ahead, the Rainbow Warriors return a strong core of talent, including All-Conference selections Tread Rosenthal, Adrien Roure and Kristian Titriyski, positioning them once again as national contenders in 2026. MLB Draft prospect Arquette returns to Hawaii this weekend

One of the most highly anticipated University of Hawai'i baseball series in recent memory is set to begin Friday, as the Rainbow Warriors welcome No. 7 Oregon State to Les Murakami Stadium for a four-game showdown. Three of the four contests have already sold out, with only standing-room tickets available for the first three games. The nationally ranked Beavers (32-11) and the 'Bows (28-14) will meet from Friday through Monday in front of what's expected to be an electric atmosphere in Manoa. Headlining the series is the return of Kailua's Aiva Arquette, Oregon State's standout shortstop and Saint Louis School graduate. A projected top-five pick in the upcoming MLB Draft and a National Player of the Year candidate, Arquette enters the weekend batting .371 with 16 home runs, 54 RBIs and 47 runs scored. 'Absolutely, it's special to come back home and just play in front of a great community—family, my friends—and I get to play against some old teammates as well,' said Arquette. 'So it's going to be fun. Yeah, I'm excited.' As for the sold-out crowds and the atmosphere at Les Murakami Stadium, Arquette added: 'It's going to be so sick. It's a great environment—almost like an SEC environment. We're so stoked to just come down and play baseball. It's really special.' The visit is also a family affair—Arquette is the older brother of current Rainbow Wahine volleyball setter Adrianna Arquette. First pitch for Friday's opener is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Games 1 and 4 will be televised on Spectrum Sports, with radio broadcasts of all four games available on ESPN Honolulu. Fresh off capturing its fourth Big West title, the University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team was awarded the No. 2 seed for the 2025 NCAA National Championship tournament, set for May 8-12 in Columbus, Ohio. The Rainbow Warriors (26-5) will open play in the quarterfinals against the winner of Daemen and Penn State. Despite going 2-1 against Long Beach State this season — including a victory over the top-seeded Beach in Saturday's Big West Championship final — UH was slotted behind LBSU, which earned the tournament's top seed. The Rainbow Warriors claimed the 2025 Big West crown with a four-set win over Long Beach State, 25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Adrien Roure recorded 11 kills without an error to earn Most Valuable Player honors, while Louis Sakanoko fired four aces to spark the fourth set. Setter Tread Rosenthal sealed the win by delivering the match-clinching point. Hawai'i adds the 2025 title to its previous Big West championships in 2019, 2022 and 2023. Under head coach Charlie Wade the Rainbow Warriors won national championships in 2021 & 2022. The first title came in Columbus, Ohio. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
