51% of drains cleaned: TMC; netas slam delay
Thane: Only 51% of drain cleaning was completed, declared Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) on Thursday, raising concerns of waterlogging with the monsoon season around the corner. Thane's drain network spans 278km and is vital for flushing out rainwater from the city and swollen streams from Yeoor, Mumbra, and Kalwa hills. Amid IMD's prediction of heavy unseasonal rains, elected representatives have now urged TMC to accelerate the pre-monsoon drain cleaning work. Former MP and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Rajan Vichare questioned, "If half of the drains are yet to be cleaned, when will the rest be done?" Contractors were only addressing surface-level garbage, he claimed. "Also, several roadworks, particularly along Ghodbunder Road, are incomplete, which could lead to waterlogging. TMC would be held accountable, and officers should face legal consequences for negligence," he warned. NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad echoed similar concerns during his Jan Samwad session. MNS's Swapnil Mahindrakar claimed that contractors were neglecting their duties and highlighted areas like Indira Nagar, Lokmanya Nagar, and Ghodbunder Road, where waste-filled drains continued to persist. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Descubra o suplemento natural que está transformando rotinas AlwaysFit Undo He threatened to stage a protest if the situation didn't improve soon. While Rabodi and K-Villa residents complained of water entering their homes during the recent pre-monsoon showers, former local corporator Najeeb Mulla blamed the sudden downpour for taking the agencies by surprise. "I have instructed the administration to ensure residents don't face any inconvenience in future," he added. Thane Congress spokesperson Rahul Pingale slammed TMC and the contractors for neglecting the New Shivajinagar, Kalwa (E) area, where he claimed that sludge scooped out from the drains was left rotting on the roads, creating a health risk. He demanded action, warning of a protest if officials failed to act. Additional municipal commissioner Prashant Rode said 90% of major drains have been cleaned using machinery, while work on smaller drains will now be taken up. Efforts were being made to expedite the cleaning process and TMC will address complaints promptly, he assured.

Shiv Sena UBT leader blames Thane Municipal Corporation for death of thousands of fishes at historic Siddheshwar Lake
Thane: Shiv Sena UBT former MP Rajan Vichare , Friday, wrote to Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao, questioning the negligence of the administration and the pollution control department, which apparently led to the death of thousands of fish in the historic Siddheshwar Lake . TOI reported the incident on Friday, which was taken up by former BJP corporator Narayan Pawar after locals complained of a stench emanating from the rotting carcasses of fish found floating on the lake surface. Officials claimed that the discharge of sewage water from surrounding areas was being emptied into the lake, leading to the growth of water weeds that consumed a bulk of oxygen from the water body. I highlighted the poor condition of the lake earlier, but to no effect. The corporation was to start conservation work under the State Lake Conservation Scheme with a budget of Rs 5.5 crore, but the work hasn't started yet. The neglect of the pollution control department is to be blamed for the death of the fish. It appears to be a deliberate neglect towards the lake maintenance," claimed Vichare. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Google Brain Co-Founder Andrew Ng, Recommends: Read These 5 Books And Turn Your Life Around Blinkist: Andrew Ng's Reading List Undo The former MP further alleged that the lake wasn't desilted for years and feared the surrounding slums could be flooded if the lake overflowed during the rains. He said the authorities would be held responsible in case of any mishap. "The ruling parties made grand announcements before the elections but have apparently cited a lack of funds to complete the works. The corporation relies on govt funds, but only works undertaken by a select few contractors are prioritised. The state money belongs to the taxpayers and not contractors or ministers. It should be distributed equally for development," he said. Manisha Pradhan, Chief Environment Officer at the Thane corporation, said, "We have started removing the weeds and the dead fishes from the lake. As an immediate remedial measure, we will plug all sewage lines opening into the lake and rout them to the drainage lines which will be constructed around the periphery," she said.
