Semi-high-speed rail corridor on Mum-Ahm route nears completion

MUMBAI: With 95% of the work on it completed, the semi-high-speed rail corridor on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route is almost done. Once complete, trains such as Vande Bharat, Rajdhani and Shatabdi can run at 160 kmph, bringing down travel time substantially. The rail corridor is part of Western Railway's (WR) 92 priority projects, which are collectively worth over ₹9,862 crore and is the most expensive one at ₹8,095 crore. According to WR officials, the minimum necessary work on upgrading rail tracks, installing metal beam fencing and ballast cushioning to the desired level for trains to run at 160kmph is complete. WR has completed vital engineering works, which include strengthening 120-plus bridge approaches, rehabilitation of 138 bridges, and straightening of 134 curvatures along the route. It has also installed safety barriers along 792 km to prevent people and cattle from trespassing. 'We are presently taking up further upgradation to smoothen the train ride, for which steps have been recommended,' said a WR official. 'Work on installing Kavach is also underway. We expect the rail line to be ready by December this year.' Some of the ongoing improvement works include increasing the ballast level to 350 mm from 300 mm for better cushioning and safety. The steel sleepers under the tracks and foot over bridges will be enhanced, besides which other measures such as augmenting power supply by 2x25,000 volt lines are on the anvil. 'We will also provide space on the sides of the rail lines for constructing passages to erect poles and other paraphernalia required for the high-powered cables,' said the official. The total cost of upping the power supply is expected to be around ₹60 crore. At present, the trains are powered with 25,000 volts. Once the rail authorities achieve train operations at 160 kmph, passengers can expect to save around 45 to 60 minutes from Mumbai to Ahmedabad, a journey that now takes around five and a half hours. This will be among the first routes from Mumbai where Vande Bharat trains will operate as semi high-speed trains. There are 50-odd trains connecting Mumbai and Ahmedabad, including Vande Bharat, Tejas and Shatabdi. 'We will revise the timetable of long-distance trains once the upgrade to 160 kmph happens,' said another WR official. At present, long-distance trains run at 100 kmph on the Mumbai Central-Borivali stretch and at 110 kmph on the Borivali-Virar route. The 1,479-km Delhi-Mumbai and the 1,525-km Delhi-Howrah sections are key stretches where the railways are trying to bring down travel time. Within the 1,379-km Mumbai-Delhi route, nearly 50% of it, from Mumbai Central to Nagda, falls under Western Railway. The remaining km are divided between West Central Railways and Northern Railway. Apart from this, WR is also carrying out work worth 1,700 crore to augment facilities. These include developing new terminuses at Jogeshwari and Vasai, adding pit lines for maintenance at Bandra Terminus and Mumbai Central Terminus, yard remodelling at Andheri and improving the signalling systems outside Mumbai.

This train of Indian Railways charges just 68 paisa per km, not Vande Bharat, Namo Bharat, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Tejas Express, train is... In India, train ticket prices change depending on the type of train and the comfort it offers. Air-conditioned (AC) coaches usually cost much more than sleeper or general coaches. In fact, in trains that are fully air-conditioned, the fare for an AC seat can be more than double that of a sleeper seat. Because of this, passengers often pick their coach based on what they can afford. We often hear about luxury trains like the Vande Bharat Express, Namo Bharat, Rajdhani, and Shatabdi. These are known for their fast service, modern amenities, and comfortable travel experience. They're so popular that they're usually booked out in advance. Plus, their prices go up with demand sometimes they can cost as much as a flight ticket. But there's one train that stands out for being extremely budget-friendly, despite having AC coaches. It's often referred to as the 'Poor Man's Rajdhani Express.' This nickname comes from the fact that it offers an air-conditioned journey at a fraction of the usual cost. And don't think that its low price means it's slow, this train is surprisingly fast. In fact, when it comes to speed, it can give even the Vande Bharat and Rajdhani trains a run for their money. India's most affordable AC train: The Garib Rath India is home to several high-end trains like the Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Vande Bharat, known for their luxury and speed. But not every traveler can afford the high fares these trains charge. That's where the Garib Rath Express comes in, a train that offers full AC comfort at a fraction of the cost, making it the cheapest AC train in India. The Garib Rath was introduced with the vision of providing air-conditioned travel to the common man without burning a hole in their pocket. While luxury trains charge hefty fares, Garib Rath allows passengers to travel in AC coaches for just 68 paise per kilometer, cheapest than any other AC train in the country. In terms of speed, it holds up quite well. While the Vande Bharat Express can hit top speeds of 160 km/h, its average runs between 66 to 96 km/h. The Garib Rath isn't far behind, clocking an average speed of 70 to 75 km/h, making it both affordable and fast. The longest-running Garib Rath route connects Chennai to Hazrat Nizamuddin (Delhi), covering a distance of 2075 kilometers in about 28 hours and 30 minutes. And guess what? The fare for this entire journey is just Rs. 1,500. Launched in 2006, the first Garib Rath train ran between Saharsa (Bihar) and Amritsar. Today, the service has expanded to 26 different routes, linking major cities like Delhi-Mumbai, Delhi-Chennai, and Patna-Kolkata. Thanks to its popularity, the train is almost always packed, and getting a confirmed ticket often requires early booking.

Pune: Summer rush throws train schedules off track; 48 services affected in April

The summer holiday rush has disrupted train schedules in Pune, with 48 trains delayed or rescheduled in April this year. Both regular and special services have been disrupted, leaving thousands of travellers inconvenienced at a time when demand peaks. Services such as the Jhelum Express and Azad Hind Express have run behind schedule. Many long route special trains have arrived more than two hours late, stretching travel times and frustrating passengers. According to officials, increased train traffic across the network has led to congestion on major routes. With limited track capacity, trains are frequently halted to let others pass. Regular trains are given priority over special services, while high-speed trains like the Vande Bharat and Rajdhani maintain fixed schedules, further tightening the grid. 'I had planned my journey weeks in advance, but my train was delayed by over six hours. I missed my connecting bus from Ernakulam,' said Rajesh Nair, an IT professional traveling to Kerala. 'It's very frustrating, especially when traveling with kids in the summer heat.' A senior railway official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, 'This complex juggling of schedules is necessary but challenging, especially during peak seasons like summer. We acknowledge the inconvenience to passengers and are working to streamline operations and reduce delays.'
