Omar's party goes unrepresented as party MP opts out of outreach trip

SRINAGAR: J&K's National Conference (NC) has no plans to nominate another representative for the all-party delegations briefing foreign nations and UN members about India's anti-terrorism position and after party MP Mian Altaf Ahmad declined to join the team currently visiting key countries. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now NC will not have political representation in any of the seven delegations. Centre had nominated the Anantnag–Rajouri MP for the delegation led by DMK MP Kanimozhi in his capacity as NC's parliamentary head, party sources said Sunday. The team includes Rajiv Rai (SP), Capt Brijesh Chowta (BJP), Prem Chand Gupta (RJD), and ambassador Jawed Ashraf. It was in Russia Saturday. Three politicians from J&K — (Democratic Progressive Azad Party), Mian Altaf (NC), and Ghulam Ali Khatana (BJP) — had been named for these outreach efforts. Altaf opted out as he is engaged with the annual religious ceremony of Hazrat Mian Nizamuddin Kiyanvi, popularly known as Baba Nagri, held in early June at Wangath in Kangan of Ganderbal district. The event draws thousands of devotees across J&K. A senior NC functionary said while the party was consulted and Altaf's consent was sought, the nomination was Centre's decision. 'Centre didn't ask us for his replacement after he declined,' the functionary said. 'Since he was nominated as parliamentary head, I don't think anyone else can represent NC now.' Tensions within NC also surfaced Sunday, as MP Aga Ruhullah Mehdi accused party brass of yielding to Centre on . On X, Mehdi wrote: 'Oh leader! Either rise and speak up for your people, or step down, wear bangles, and remain confined to a palanquin.' The post appeared to target CM , who had earlier posted: 'Sunday musing. There are doers & there are talkers. That's why I don't talk as much as some people I know.' The internal rift became public during NC's working committee meeting on May 21, where Mehdi voiced frustration over lack of progress on restoring Article 370.

Missile-like object falls into Dal Lake, drone shot down over Srinagar airfield

Srinagar/Jammu: A missile-like object dropped into Srinagar's Dal Lake on Saturday as loud explosions rocked the city. Officials said that a missile-like object fell into Dal Lake this morning. The object's debris has been recovered and is being analysed, the officials added. Another suspicious object was recovered from the Lasjan area of Srinagar, and the same is also being analysed. Loud explosions continued to rock Srinagar and Jammu cities as people started panicking and asking about these explosions. Five people, including Raj Kumar Thapa, Additional District Development Commissioner (ADDC) Rajouri and a woman identified as Rashida Bi were among the five killed persons by indiscriminate shelling by Pakistan. One person identified as Ashok Kumar was killed by a splinter in the R.S. Pura area of Jammu. Two residents of Bihar, including a two-year-old boy and a 36-year-old man, were also killed in the Mendhar area of Poonch district. Jammu and Kashmir L-G Manoj Sinha said on X, "Reviewed security situation in the border districts. Anguished by the loss of lives due to unprovoked shelling by Pakistan. We have lost brave citizens, including our ADDC Rajouri, Dr. Raj Kumar Thapa, in the line of duty. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families." A drone was shot down by the air-defence system at the old airfield in Srinagar on Saturday as the city was rocked by massive blasts, officials said. Two massive explosions were heard near the Srinagar airport around noon, they said. The officials said a drone hovering over the old airfield, also called the "technical" airport, was shot down by the air defence system. Further details were awaited, they added. Former chief minister and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti said on X, "Even though initially U.S. Vice President Vance stated that America wouldn't intervene beyond a certain point in the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan - now in light of the worrying intensity of the situation, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reached out to the Pakistani Army Chief, urging de-escalation. India, as the world's largest democracy and now as an emerging power/ the most populous nation, with a rapidly growing economy ranked third globally, must not rely on inconsistent international support. Instead, India should embrace its leadership role in the subcontinent and take the first step to de-escalate. The world is watching us. This is the moment for India to stand tall and demonstrate that its true strength lies in its soft power and commitment to peace, not in nukes."

Pakistan's Operation Bunyan al-Marsus: What does it mean?

Pakistan on Saturday morning launched multiple drones and missiles at India, most of which were intercepted, according to the Indian forces. Pakistan's actions reportedly come under its newly-launched operation against India, called 'Operation Bunyan al-Marsus'. The new escalation comes after India attacked three air bases in Pakistan on the intervening night of Friday-Saturday. The air bases attacked by India are - Nur Khan in Rawalpindi, Murid in Chakwal, and Rafiqui in Jhang. India's actions were preceded by sightings of Pakistani drones in as many as 26 locations in several Indian states - Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat on Friday night. The name of Operation Bunyan al-Marsus has been picked from a verse in the Quran. According to a report by the New York Times, it means 'a firm and compact structure'. An Al Jazeera report said that 'Bunyan Marsoos' is an Arabic phrase which directly translates to 'a structure made of lead'. The report also added that the verse from which the name has been picked reads, 'Truly Allah loves those who fight in His Cause in battle array, as if they were a solid cemented structure.' Several reports have spelled the name of the supposed operation differently. The military conflict between India and Pakistan escalated on Saturday morning after several cities in Jammu and Kashmir woke up to loud explosions. The Pakistan shelling also led to some casualties. In Jammu and Kashmir, Rajouri's additional district development commissioner (ADDC), Raj Kumar Thappa, was killed after his home was hit Pakistan' shelling early Saturday morning. The border district in Jammu and Kashmir is reportedly under full-scale attack, with loud explosions heard in multiple parts since dawn. Other cities such as Jammu, Srinagar, and Udhampur also heard loud explosions this morning as Pakistan continues to shell border cities in India. The Indian Armed Forces are promptly reacting and engaging all aerial threats using counter-drone systems.
