Nagpur: Adopting a novel way of protest in several parts of the state, farmers donated blood on Wednesday as a symbolic gesture to draw attention of those who matter in govt to seek
farm loan waiver
.
The protest was organised by Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, headed by former MP
Raju Shetty
, and Prahar Janshakti Party of
Bachchu Kadu
. Both Shetty and Kadu have been taking up farmers' issues.
Kadu, who lost 2024 assembly poll to BJP from Achalpur in Amravati district, held the protest near Traffic Park in Dharampeth in Nagpur.
At Pusad in Yavatmal district, a group of around 120 farmers gathered outside the home of Maharashtra's minister for tribal development, soil, water conservation, and public works, Indranil Naik.
Out of them, 47 farmers donated blood. "Similar protests were also held in front of ministers' bungalows at other places in the state," said Deepak Aade, one of the activists who took part in the protest.
"It's a symbolic gesture that impoverished farmers can only give their blood instead of keep repaying loans," said Manish Jadhav, an activist who took part in the protest. "Once again, farmers are cash-starved," he said. Aade told TOI that primary demand of the farmers is loan waiver. However, farmers are also demanding that state govt should increase monthly dole of Rs1,500 given to people with disabilities to Rs6,000, he said.
