Azerbaijan marks Independence Day, highlights ties with S. Korea

The Embassy of Azerbaijan in Seoul commemorated the 107th anniversary of Azerbaijan's independence, highlighting ties with South Korea on Tuesday. The annual event commemorates the establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic on May 28, 1918, which ended nearly two centuries of Iranian and Russian rule and marked the restoration of Azerbaijan's statehood. 'On 28 May 1918, Azerbaijani people not only gained their independence but also paved their way into the future with democracy, parliamentarism, secularism, human rights including gender equality,' said Azerbaijani Ambassador to Korea Ramin Hasanov in his remarks. 'While being the first-ever democratic republic in the entire Muslim world, Azerbaijan granted its female citizens the right to vote, ahead of even the most Western countries,' Hasanov said. Despite its collapse due to Soviet occupation in 1920, the Republic achieved significant diplomatic recognition from the Paris Peace Conference, according to Hasanov. Azerbaijan regained its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. According to Hasanov, numerous ambitious energy, transport and infrastructure mega-projects, which were realized thanks to Azerbaijan's engagement and leadership, have secured its strategic role at the crossroads between Europe and Asia. 'Azerbaijan also ended the long-lasting conflict with Armenia,' he said, referring to the resolution of the conflict with Armenia. Noting problems of climate change, global health, economic uncertainty, and hoping for a just and equitable world, Hasanov emphasized that no country stands alone, making Azerbaijan-Korea ties and international partners matter more than ever. 'Here in Korea, we are grateful for the strong ties of cooperation, cultural exchange and mutual respect that continue to grow between our nations,' said Hasanov. 'Azerbaijan is the largest economic and trade partner of Korea in the South Caucasus,' he noted. Meanwhile, Hasanov also thanked Korea for participating in the COP29 held in Baku. 'We are glad that our countries (Azerbaijan and Korea) are maintaining constructive political dialogue based on mutual interests,' said Hasanov. The event also featured an art exhibition by young Azerbaijani artists attended by members of the diplomatic corps, business community, civil society and the Azerbaijani community in Korea, as well as the media.

Azerbaijan urges Korean firms to invest in Alat FEZ

Azerbaijan commended Korean manufacturing companies to its Alat Free Economic Zone investment hub at a networking event held Wednesday at Ambassador Pullman Seoul. Speaking at "Alat Free Economic Zone: Unlocking potential for Korean manufacturing companies," Azerbaijani Ambassador to Korea Ramin Hasanov recommended AFEZ as a gateway for Korean investors seeking access to the wider Caucasus and Central Asian markets. Hasanov highlighted AFEZ's strategic location near major production and export hubs such as Baku International Sea Trade Port, and plans for a fully green airport to be completed by 2026. 'Korean investors are welcome to explore a myriad of commercial advantages provided by Alat Free Economic Zone,' he underlined. Azerbaijan is expanding specialized industrial sites, such as agri-parks, techno-parks and industrial districts, to attract foreign investment, while leveraging the strategic value of regional connectivity projects, particularly the Trans-Caspian East-West Middle Corridor, which links Turkey to Central Asia and China via the Caucasus and Caspian Sea, according to Hasanov. 'We invite Korean transit operators, freight-forwarding and logistics companies to benefit from the economic advantages provided by the Middle Corridor," said Hasanov. According to Hasanov, Azerbaijan is developing new cities and towns from the ground up using green technologies, modern urban planning and intelligent systems, while promoting smart city, smart village and smart farm concepts. 'Our goal is to transform these areas into net-zero emission zones by 2050.' 'Korea is one of the few countries worldwide that has been invited at the highest level to participate in the restoration and reconstruction works conducted in our liberated territories,' he noted, inviting Korean investors to the Garabagh and East Zangazur economic regions. sanjaykumar@

Azerbaijan celebrates renewal with Novruz, lauds compatriots in Korea

The Azerbaijani Embassy in Seoul marked Novruz on Tuesday, celebrating renewal and unity. Novruz, meaning "New Day," signifies the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year. Observed on March 21, the festival has been celebrated for thousands of years across the Silk Road region, including in the Balkans, the Black Sea Basin, the Caucasus, Central Asia and the Middle East. The festival strengthens social bonds through community gatherings, festive meals and public celebrations, transcending its Iranian and Zoroastrian roots to become widely embraced across cultures and religions. Novruz was inscribed on UNESCO's representative list of intangible cultural heritage in 2009 through a multinational nomination by Azerbaijan, India, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan. In 2016, Afghanistan, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan joined the nomination, further expanding its international recognition. The festival is observed as a national holiday in Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, India, Iran, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. In his remarks, Azerbaijani Ambassador to Korea Ramin Hasanov said that Novruz has deep cultural roots that emphasize harmony among nations. "Novruz fosters peace, solidarity, reconciliation and good neighborly values, promoting cultural diversity, tolerance and friendship across civilizations," Hasanov said, citing Novruz as a unique contribution of the Azerbaijani people to world culture and the preservation of traditions. "It (Novruz) is a mysterious relic passed down from our ancestors to present generations," he added. Meanwhile, he also commended Azerbaijani expatriates in Korea for their contributions to raising Azerbaijan's profile abroad. "Despite being small in number, our compatriots in Korea have successfully represented and promoted Azerbaijan in various spheres of public life with their education, knowledge, skills and achievements," he noted. The celebration featured traditional Azerbaijani music, national dance performances, and an array of Azerbaijani delicacies, reflecting the festival's joyful spirit. The event was attended by Azerbaijani students and embassy officials, members of the diplomatic corps, foreign residents, scholars, think tank representatives and media professionals -- a testament to Novruz's global significance. sanjaykumar@

Azerbaijan commemorates Khojaly massacre

The Azerbaijani Embassy in Seoul marked the 32nd anniversary of the Khojaly massacre, hosting a symposium on Wednesday. Remembering the victims, the embassy reiterated that massacre was carried out by Armenian forces, killing 613 Azerbaijani civilians, including 106 women and 63 children, in the tragic event of 1992. Azerbaijan views the attack as a deliberate act of genocide, referencing the 1948 UN Convention on Genocide. The massacre occurred during the 1990s Azerbaijan-Armenia war, with Armenia disputing the death toll and blaming Azeri soldiers and poor civilian evacuation. "Commemorating the innocent victims of this genocide is a moral duty," stressed Azerbaijani Ambassador to Korea Ramin Hasanov in his remarks at the symposium. "Unfortunately, we had to wait more than 30 years for justice to prevail for the tragedies and crimes committed against our people," he said. Meanwhile, the ambassador urged Korea to step up cooperation with Korean expertise in the Garabagh and East Zangezur regions of Azerbaijan, which have been declared 'green zones.' "Infrastructure and all activities over there will be exclusively facilitated only with green energy. Numerous smart villages, smart cities, wind energy parks, and solar energy systems are currently under construction," stressed the ambassador. Azerbaijan declared 2024 as the Year of Solidarity for a Green World and hosted COP29, attended by 80 heads of state and government, affirming its strong commitment to global climate action. "These developments have created momentum for Azerbaijan and Korea to combine their willingness and strengths towards close cooperation in the said fields, both in a bilateral format and within multilateral institutions," he said. "Amid the ongoing geopolitical challenges and conflicts in the world, Azerbaijan and Korea, as loyal supporters of international law and advocates for international commitments, could closely cooperate and coordinate their endeavors in terms of regional and global affairs." "Korea, in its capacity as a nonpermanent member of the UN Security Council, which will last till the end of this year, can count on my country's cooperation in its efforts to this end," he added. The event was attended by over 100 guests, including members of the diplomatic corps, NGOs, Azerbaijani community members in Korea, and media representatives.
