Seychelles Tops Africa in New Global Ranking of Financial Crime Risk for 2025
The President of the Republic of Seychelles, Mr. Wavel Ramkalawan, has welcomed with great pride the latest global ranking that places Seychelles as the top-performing African nation in the 2025 Financial Crime Risk Index, recently published by the Basel Institute on Governance. This recognition is a strong testament to the country's unwavering commitment to transparency, financial integrity, and institutional reform. President Ramkalawan commended all stakeholders, particularly the financial regulatory bodies, law enforcement agencies, and the judiciary, for their collective efforts in strengthening Seychelles' anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing frameworks. According to the latest Global Financial Crime Risk Ranking, Seychelles is ranked 22nd globally—surpassing many highly developed nations such as the United Kingdom, France, Japan, Poland, and the United States. Within Africa, Seychelles leads as the country with the lowest financial crime risk, followed by Botswana, Mauritius, and Rwanda. As a proud member of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC), Seychelles has set a flagship example for its fellow Small Island States. Despite its small size, the nation continues to make remarkable strides, consistently earning top-tier positions in global indexes—including the Mo Ibrahim Index and Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index. 'This progress is yet another milestone in our national journey to build a credible, trustworthy, and resilient economy. Just as we made significant strides in the global Corruption Perception Index, this new ranking confirms that our efforts are delivering tangible results. We will continue working diligently so that Seychelles is soon removed from the European Union's grey list,' said the President. He reaffirmed the government's determination to uphold the highest international standards to ensure Seychelles remains an attractive, secure, and competitive destination for credible investors. Seychelles: President Ramkalawan Inaugurates Vista Heights Estate in Glacis
Under the theme "Peace and Harmony," President Wavel Ramkalawan presided over the official inauguration of the Vista Heights Estate in the Glacis district yesterday afternoon. The project, a joint initiative with the Qatar Fund in collaboration with the Government of Seychelles, commenced in September 2023 and was completed in December 2024, with a total investment of SCR 11.8 million. The new residential development comprises 12 two-bedroom apartments, providing homes for 12 families from the district. A key highlight of the ceremony was the unveiling of a commemorative plaque by President Ramkalawan and the Minister for Land and Housing, Billy Rangasamy, followed by the symbolic handing over of keys to the new residents. The estate also features a spacious parking area, a children's playground, and a volleyball court. In her welcoming address, Regina Esparon, Member of the National Assembly for Glacis, congratulated the new tenants and urged them to protect their new homes: "Respect your new compound against vandalism, anti-social and illegal activities." In his address, the Minister for Land and Housing Mr. Billy Ramgasamy expressed that it was "a delightful honour to inaugurate the new housing estate in the Glacis District after 20 years of no housing development." Explaining the inspiration behind the name Vista Heights, he referenced its location next to the former Vista Do Mar Hotel. "This is clear evidence of the Government's commitment to ensure affordable housing for its people," Minister Rangasamy stated, urging residents to uphold strong community values and responsibly manage their home repayments. He expressed hope that the new estate would serve as a model neighborhood, fostering harmony and positive social behaviour. The ceremony also featured a poetry recital and musical performance by students from Glacis Primary School, reflecting on the values of peace and community. This latest development underscores the Seychelles government's continued efforts to enhance housing infrastructure through strategic international partnerships. Among the distinguished attendees were Minister for Internal Affairs Errol Fonseka, Minister for Local Government and Community Affairs Rose Marie Hoareau, Hon. World Governments Summit 2025: President Wavel Ramkalawan Reaffirms Seychelles' Commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the SDGs in Action Forum
The President of the Republic of Seychelles, Mr. Wavel Ramkalawan, delivered a keynote address at the SDGs in Action Forum, reaffirming Seychelles' unwavering commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and shaping a bold global agenda beyond 2030. The forum is taking place on the margins of the World Governments Summit 2025 currently being held in Dubai. In his address, President Ramkalawan emphasized the urgency of accelerating efforts towards the 2030 SDG targets while laying the foundation for a visionary 2045 global agenda. He stated: "As we approach 2030, the horizon of the Sustainable Development Goals, we must celebrate the strides we have made while acknowledging the road ahead. Our current priority is achieving the SDGs by 2030, but we must begin designing a 2045 global agenda – one that is bold, ambitious, and demands decisive action." The President underscored that a vision without action remains a dream, urging the global community to ensure that the post-2030 agenda is not only aspirational but actionable. He called for decisive commitments in five key areas: Climate Justice and Resilience – Prioritizing adaptation and resilience-building, particularly for vulnerable nations and communities. Sustainable Finance Mechanisms – Mobilizing innovative financial instruments, such as climate bonds, blue bonds, and green taxes, to fund sustainable development. Technology for Good – Harnessing AI, blockchain, and big data to advance education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability. Equity and Inclusion – Ensuring that no one is left behind, with gender equality, social protection, and access to basic services at the core of development efforts. A New Global Governance Model – Advocating for stronger, more inclusive, and representative multilateral institutions to address the evolving challenges of the 21st century. In concluding the President further urged all global stakeholders in approaching 2030 and beyond with decisive actions, by acting collectively, and courageously. "The future we want by 2045 is within our grasp—but only if we work together, innovate together, and lead together. The time for action is now. The next generation is watching. The world we build today is the world they will inherit tomorrow. Let us not fail them" said President Ramkalawan. Following his intervention, President Ramkalawan also met with Seychelles delegates who were part of the 2nd Cohort of the Executive Leadership Programme at WGS2025, following their graduation ceremony. Dorasamy, who secured gold in the middleweight category, shared his inspiring journey with the President, highlighting the discipline, consistency, and mental resilience required to achieve excellence in the sport. He also expressed deep gratitude to President Ramkalawan and the government for their steadfast support throughout his competitive career. Known for his strong spiritual foundation, Dorasamy credited his success to unwavering determination and a dedicated support system.
